I had heard that the Dyson vacums had bad reviews in consumer reports. Sears, Kenmore brand is a good one.
I finally got my husband convinced to get me a Dyson for my birthday. When we got married 7 years ago he had a Oreck and I hated it. Now, we are trying to decide which one?

.....I AM SOOO JEALOUS!!!!!.....
Maybe one day when I grow up...I'll get a Dyson too!!!!
Margaret :)
I purchased the purple animal version and LOVE IT!! My son and daughter-in-law got the regular yellow one (and they hav 3 dogs) and theirs really does just about as good of job as mine does with the pet hair.

i love my DC14...don't waste the extra $100 for the animal, it's just one extra attachment to clean couches/curtains.
Hi J.-
I too dreamed of owning a Dyson and when my Hoover appeared to be dying I started shopping around intent on buying the Dyson. After talking to someone who had been repairing vacuums for over 20 years, seeing Consumer Reports and reading comments online from owners, I quickly changed my mind and decided on the Kenmore Progressive.
I have to say, in the end my Hoover was fixable so I have not bought a new vacuum but based on my research when the time comes I will definitely save the $200 and buy a Kenmore. Here's the link if you want to check it out.

Hi J.! After thinking long and hard about buying a Dyson, I just decided one day to JUST DO IT. And I LOVE my Dyson. I have the purple animal one......because we have a yellow lab that sheds alot. I had to go around my house and only do small areas the first time I used it because it picked up SO much hair that the bin would be full after only a few pushes of the vacuum.....can you say 'YUCK!'. : ) I definitely think it's worth the money!!!
I started with a yellow Dyson. I loved it so much, I bought the purple one (the animal) for my upstairs (purple only because of the deal, not because we have indoor animals). They work equally well but the purple one tends to static shock me when I vacuum on carpet. I did some research and found others who experience this same problem. It has something to do with how the unit is designed to pick up animal hair. If you choose to buy Dyson, and you plan to have your 5-year-old use it, you may want to avoid the purple one just in case.
DEFNITELY get one of the dyson's with the ball.......instead of wheels......it is sooooo easy to control. You will love it! Oh, and make sure it does NOT have a belt.......the newer model doesn't, which means you do not have to change the belt out every year. Another plus!
I have the red one (special attachment for under furniture, which I NEVER use). I used to have the purple one with pet attachment, but that broke early on. I love the dyson, though, and I, too, had an Oreck which I didn't like. I'd either go with the original yellow model (unless you think you will really use the special attachments that come with some) or the new ball one like prior poster said. That's going to be my next big purchase - gotta do some sweet talking to the hubby for that one.
We recently went though the very same thing. I wanted the Dyson and my husband wanted the Oreck. I called my daughter since she has a Dyson and she said that they used to own a Oreck and in her opinion, the Dyson is the best choice, especially for pet hair.
We purchased the Dyson and I love it! I had no idea my rugs were so dirty and how worthless the previous vaccum was. It also works on tile and hard wood, is eady to clean and it sucks in a good way.
We bought the yellow Dyson about 2 or 3 years ago. It has been the best vacuum we have ever owned. One question though, why did you ask for a vacuum cleaner for your birthday? I know it is a large expense but a vacuum is a necessity not a gift! I hope he at least can pick you up some flowers! Anyway, Happy Birthday and God bless!
After reading some of the negative comments (I know I should have done that first) I would like to point out that most of them are getting their information from repair experts. Of course they won't like a Dyson because they probably don't have to be repaired very often! Just a thought.
We just had our second baby, and so that makes 2 babies under 2. My husband bought me a Roomba (it's a robotic vacuum that cleans your floors for you) because we have a 2100 sq.foot house and vacuuming with 2 babies has definitely become difficult and almost obsolete. However, I am anally obsessed over my floors being spotless. I did love vacuuming (call me crazy) before having children, but I simply couldn't find the time to get to it anymore. Anyway, we bought a Roomba and WOW!! I come downstairs every morning and just smile at how clean my floors are. And even though I loved vacuuming, the fact that I don't have to worry about it anymore is such a bonus! Look in to it before you make up your mind!
Hi J.,
I have the animal model and I love it. We've had so many different vacuums over the years - sears/kenmore, hoover, eureka, rainbo, oreck - but I have never had a vacuum that worked as well as my dyson. I've had it since they first came to the U.S. and I really did my homework before I bought one. I was fascinated to read James Dyson's story and how the CEO of Hoover wished that he had bought James Dyson's technology just to keep it off the market because the vacuum bag industry in the U.S. was a multi-million dollar per year business. It's a really fascinating story. I noticed that the folks who have given a "thumbs-down" here don't even have a Dyson, so I am not sure how they can have an informed opinion if you don't even own one or have never personally used one. My advice is the listen to the folks that DO have one. The animal is about $100 more and has a special attachment for removing pet hair. If you have pets, it is great, but if that's not a big concern for you, then you could get one of the other models. I think one person mentioned that the Dyson is difficult to clean and I, personally, have not found it to be difficult to clean at all.
Hope this helps!
We just got the DC18 Slim and I absolutely love it!
We got ours off of e-bay for much much cheaper than any of the stores were selling it for ($300 w/ free shipping)
I've heard lots of good things from friends about the DC17, but they all have animals and seemed to think that the DC17 worked better than others on that kind of thing....
Good Luck

Hi, J..
We've had our Dyson for close to a year and have been very pleased with it. I believe the model number is DC07 and it's a yellow upright. It's super easy to empty the "clear bin" or the area the dirt is held. We've had bagless vacuums in the past which were extremely messy to empty (dust everywhere) - this can be removed and emptied with one hand and very little mess!! It's also a fairly light weight vacuum. (It takes a couple times to commit to memory how to switch over to the hose and attachments, but no big deal.) It seems like our dogs shed year-round (ugh), so we've certainly put our Dyson to the test! You might check out the newer models as well. The one they're advertising which rotates on a ball looks interesting! I think you will be happy with a Dyson.
Happy Birthday, by the way! (Maybe we're both May babies?) Note: I believe Dysons are considerably less then Oreks, so he can probably treat you to a nice dinner out on the town without the kids as well! Smile.

I love my Dyson DC14. I still get amazed at how much I vacum up, even without carpet.
My husband is allergic to cats and has had a hard time staying at my mother's house as she has a cat. We purchased the Dyson canister for her and he now has no problem sleeping there:-)She still of course does all the usual washing of sheets etc.
My advice? DON'T GET ONE AT ALL!
Not to scream at you or burst your bubble, of course, but the reason they don't lose sucking power is because they don't have any to begin with! My SIL got one after months of research, only to be VERY disappointed. She has to hold it at a 45' angle, and even then it doesn't work all the time. Plus, to clean it is extremely messy. I went to a vacuum repair store and actually asked the owner about them because I was looking into buying one myself (before my SIL got one), and she said that they are terrible. I would speak to a repair store clerk/owner and ask them what they recommend based on your needs - as there are SO many kinds. It's an expensive investment, and you want a good product. It's only my opinion and you can take it or leave it, but I was talked out of it. Good luck!
Any of the Dyson vacuum cleaners are great. I have two boxers so I vacuum daily. Before my son was born I convinced my husband to buy me a Dyson. We purchased the original yellow Dyson and it's fantastic. As a test, we vacuumed our bedroom with our original vacuum then turned around a re-vacuumed with our Dyson. It was amazing how much the Dyson picked up! I will never use another vacuum again! Congratulations on convincing your husband! It took me about 2 years but I finally got mine!
I did a ton of research before I got a vacuum in early 2007, including Consumer Reports and reading product reviews. I ended up with a Kenmore, which was very highly rated on CR, and I adore it. I now totally look forward to vacuuming. It has this cool light system that lets you know when the floor is really clean. I think my model is called progressive direct. It's purple. Check it out before you settle on a Dyson.
We paid $350 for our Hoover Windtunnel and have never been happy with it. It was so messy to empty, the belts would break, it clogged weekly, and it just wasn't a good vacuum. Now that it died I did some research and regardless of what people say about Consumer Reports I found that everytime the question of what vacuum to buy comes up most everyone says Dyson. So, that's what we decided to get.
We went on the website and read about all the models. The different names for the models (animal, allergy, ect) just refers to the attachments. So we decided on getting allergy rather then animal because although we have a cat we don't have furniture and curtains that need the hair vacuumed off which is the only thing special about that one. The model # vary in chord length and other features. Here's a good site to explain the differences in models. You can also google "compare dyson models."

What we love about our vacuum, for the benefit of the naysayers- even after the floor looked perfectly clean we still got more dirt out. It was embarrassing, actually. I'd say it cleans as well as those water vacuums that cost so much more, are a pain to clean and drag around with you, and those with allergies are not supposed to use the water vacs. It's easy to empty into the trash. It doesn't clog. It's light enough that my 5 year old pushes it around. Definitely a wise purchase.
We missed the $100 off sale Dyson was doing in their retail stores so we comparison shopped online and got free shipping and over $100 off the typical walmart price. :)
Enjoy,
S.
