...baking banana-bread or pound cake or brownies!!!!! No need for chemicals, just use edible scents, you have a double satisfaction...guaranteed ;-P
I have used Yankee candles, Glade plug ins, stick ups etc.
I have not used the diffusers/oil. Have you?
I'm happy with the Yankee candles, but I'm open to suggestions.
Thanks
It's funny, quite a few of you assumed my house stinks and that I'm trying to figure that out, LOL.
Well, it doesn't, in fact it smells of 'nothing' and I LIKE for it to smell of some scent, just wanted to know what everyone else uses.
Thanks for all the ideas.

I really, really dislike overpowering scents.
I like the reed diffusers & oil. Very subtle.
Fresh air & baking are great ways to get the house smelling clean, but not fake & scent-y.
I hide bounce sheets :) Under the couch cusion, hang on a ceiling fan, in front of vents, under mattress.... all kinds of places. I love the smell of clean laundry :)
Well today I've got a giant pot of chicken stock on the stove (my cauldron, giggle), takes at least 4 hours til it's done. Whole neighborhood smells divine.
Otherwise my trick is garlic, dogs, and teenager's sneakers.
Aaaah, smells like home!
:)
throwing open the windows, running the fans, taking out the trash, beating the rugs and the sofa cushions, laundering the textiles, and baking cinnamon rolls. We don't use "deoderizers."
in a pinch, throw some baking soda down all your drains, on your rugs, in your fridge.
good luck to you and yours,
F. B.
Open the windows as soon as it is nice enough outside. I do use candles also but I also like to boil cinnamon sticks, cloves, and oranges or apples on the stove.
I love my scentsy plug ins!!!
EDIT: and right now we are having some work done in our basement and our entire house smells like freshly cut wood ~ I LOVE it!
Due to allergies (me and my son), we don't use scented candles or diffusers. I LOVE the smell of fresh air, though, so on days like yesterday (and today), ALL of our windows are open! Stale air out... fresh air in.
I have also been known to bake a batch of brownies for the "sole reason" of making the house smell good! Of course, then we have to eat them so we're not being wasteful.
Bake some pumpkin bread, works for my house, but then again, it's a smaaaaall house ;)
i sell scentsy and love the way different smells smell up my house. no candles for me. with scentsy i can leave the warmers go all day and enjoy the freshness of the warmers....
yesterday i went to help in school and two of the children(5th graders) told me i smelled good...the girl said she liked my perfume(didn't have any on) and the boy said i smelled like cotton candy. i had too laugh as to they were smelling my scentsy on my clothes!!! just in case anyone needs to know it was cherry limeade!!
As a person who's sensitive to virtually all "modern" chemicals, no smell is the best smell. Most air "fresheners" are really quite toxic (google "air freshener safety"), and even if your family doesn't react negatively to them now, the chemical load over many years can bring some people to a health breakdown. I had this happen over 25 years ago, and I honestly thought I must be dying. I don't want that to happen to anybody's children.
And my life since then is very carefully limited to avoid situations where I'd likely get exposed to synthetic chemicals. That would mean a visit to your house would be very short and embarrassing: "Hi, J., so good to see you. It's been awhile, how are you and the family?" (chemical hits the brain, headache sets in) "Uh, oh, say, um, I'm really sorry, but I have this weird health problem with scents, and I can't stay. No, really, I've gotta leave before I'm too disoriented to drive safely. No, REALLY. It's an invisible malady, and people always think I'm crazy, but I HAVE to leave now. I'll call you later."
It's even worse if I have to either leave my husband behind and pick him up later, or drag him away with me. He's a saint about it, though.
I have a chicken in the crock pot that is doing a pretty good job right now. I have used a 'tart burner' for years (I use Yankee tarts, Scentsy bricks and the ones from Walmart...Good Housekeeping, I think). It easily scents one level of the house but it isn't overpowering. You can use them to heat oil as well.
Dinner, sometimes lunch, breakfast on the weekends. :)
Cleaning helps too. :p
Artificial anything hurts my nose.
Diffusers are ok, but I don't like the strong ones. Eucalyptus smells great; I have some in strategically placed vases of it around the house and it's subtle but nice. Fresh air/open windows with a breeze is nice. Aside from that, whatever I'm baking/cooking in the kitchen makes the house smell awesome. :)
I don't know about the whole house, but I do know out garbage disposal was smelling pretty rank once. I put in a bunch of orange peels and ran it and the bad smell was gone.
Ohhh. I just though of one. When I bake pumpkin bread the house smells GREAT!
I love to use the crock-pot, especially for apples with cinnamon. The entire house smells great, but it doesn't last for too long. I'm also a fan of the breadmaker, but again, doesn't last long. I like candles from Bath and Body Works better than Yankee. They fill up the entire downstairs in minutes. They have sales- 2 for $20 and always use coupons- the three-wicks last forever.
wouldn't use any of the synthetic oils of ANY kind or brand - only use essential oils -- Young Living has WONDERFUL ones that are also good for you!!! I'm sure there's someone nearby you who would be happy to "expose" you to them!!! :)
Totally agree with Fanged Bunny - we try not to use any smelly stuff. Open the windows and clean. Maybe some fresh furniture polish.
Cooking Thanksgiving dinner makes the whole house smell very wonderful.
My husband will step outside for a few moments so he can come back in and take a big deep breath of 'roasting turkey' smell.
I could be wrong, but I don't think they have a roast turkey scented candle for that.
(Plus my husband would think it cruel if he could smell the turkey but there was no actual turkey for supper.)
I use light incense sticks because they are what my husband remembers from home mostly they smell like sage, rosemary, jasmine, sandlewood. They normally beat out any air fresheners, which I have developed a sensitivity too. Since I cook with such strong spices and smells its is a losing battle to have flowery, perfumes in my house. I also vote for open windows, clean well, and use light lemony scents. I dont care what people think, as long as my house doesnt smell like a toilet I am happy.
Take an orange, it even works after it's juiced, tear it apart, and plop it into a pot of water with a splash of vanilla. Let it simmer all day. It helps increase the humidity in the house a bit, no artificial anything, and it smells fantastic!
But I like the Yankee candles, too, if I want something a bit different.
I've tried the diffusers - they're very, very subtle, and seem to only work well in small spaces.
I always have my Partylite scent glow warmer going. Today put in Bluer Skies and even with my windows open the scent fills my whole house. This is the 1st time I changed for about a month. I have had a scent smell for almost 4 weeks and my warmer is on 24/7. What nice about them too is that the warmer does not get hot and the wax is never hot either. My bedroom is also my office so it smells like candles all the time. The scent that usually pops out over the others is either honeydew or strawberry rhubarb. My bathroom right now right now has a reed diffuser that is Pure Vanilla Cream. Love that fact with Partylite I don't have to light a candle for the smell to fill the room!
I have also had others tell me that Partylite candles are the only one that doesn't affect their allergies. They are expensive but worth the money!
Where the air filter is for your heat/AC put a scented sheet. They sell them at Walmart. The air will be sucked in through the sheet then the scent and the air will be dispersed through the whole house.
Or do I like I do and constantly bake and cook and then the house will smell delicious! (I don't recommend this if you're on a diet, lol!)
I love Scentsy products. It is flameless so less risk of fire. They have all sorts of scents. It makes my whole house smell so good. I come home and it is like walking into shangri-la. Check out their website. I am sure there is a distrubutor near you.
I use febreeze plug ins, in my opinion, they are the smelliest and do not smell cheap and annoying.
J. - I'm a Scentsy girl all the way! I luv the product so much I decided to sell it to support my habbit! I am in Richmond not too far from you & am more then happy to let you borrow a warmer for a few days to see if you like it!!! I also have some warmers in stock that I could work something out with you! Let me know if your interested. My web address is https://Santhoff.scentsy.us or feel free to text me at ###-###-####.
Scentsy has tons of scents to choose from so I'm sure we'll be able to find something for you. I look forward to hearing from you!
For "me":
My mom cooking!
Sorry, I am NOT sharing her!
I like the Yankee candles too, but the smell last so little =*(
Other things I like are incense.
I have scentsy but I also add essential oils to refreshen the scents.
Also throwing open the windows and letting the house air out is great.
But my favorite scents of all time is that fresh baked chocolate chip cookie smell and last night my nephew made fried chicken. We almost never fry anything but that smell was the best.
Scentsy!!!!! Go to www.scentsy.com
Scentsy. More $$$ but definately worth it. The scents last a long time.
I've not found anything that compares to yankee candles. They are expensive but worth it! I do use scentsy but the scents just don't last like yankee.
I love Yankee Candles but sometimes the strong perfume irritates the kiddos so I for an all natural approach at times. Sometimes Ill get a lemon, orange or a lime and put that into the garbage disposal and turn it on while the water is running, it creates a really fresh citrusy smell.Or, you can boil some water and add pretty much anything. I like to use cinnamon powder and vanilla and boil that for about 30 minutes to an hour, it leaves a really nice aroma all through the house without that fake perfume smell.
yummy spices on the stove make it smell like you're baking apple pie.
I use diffusers/oil...when I'm home just me I break out my Yankee candles...but the rest of the family can't stand the candles.
Unfortunately I can open window for a limited amount of time during the year. A few weeks in late March and early April (sometimes into May) or end of Sept early Oct.
We are either hot or freezing here. In the spring we have this tree that when it blooms it gives off the most disgusting smell...almost like dogs have pooped on the window seal. About time for that sucker to bloom too....
Did I say I miss Colorado? I could have the windows open for long periods of time.
Scentsy. I use both the warmers and the room sprays. I don't usually leave them on when i'm gone all day - but they are on from the moment i get home to the moment I leave in the morning. Great night lights.
Yankee candles gives me headaches. Anything strong like that kills me. I keep the windows open, as I love the smell of fresh air. Sometimes I use California Baby's Cranky and Overtired with Lavender.

Love Febreeze!
Or I take my teapot and put water in it, and add cinnamon, and apple and boil it for awhile. Makes every room smell amazing and warm!
ETA: Sometimes it's hard to open the windows, especially now because it's snowing! Soo sometimes doing that isnt an option.
I like essential oils in diffusers or incense.
I like the arm and hammer type sprikle on, vaccuum up stuff for carpet.
I clean the hard surfaces and floors with proper cleansers 1st and then do a quick swipe with Fabuloso afterward. It smells great.
I have a couple of scentsy plug ins in the big rooms and renuzit type gel deoderizers in the bathrooms.
J., you need Scentsy! I love mine. I have several around my home. They have every scent imaginable. Google for a local rep.
We have been in a rental for going on our 4th year. The owner used to do some crazy homeopathic homemade remedies and we have Saltillo tiles which I think obsorb the smells. Not saying your house smells...ours did...and now we use Sentsy and it really makes a difference. I have one in the front living room and one in the back family room. I have them on most of the time while we are home and when people come over they comment on how good the house smells. And like someone else said, they make great nightlights. =)
Bath and Body Works Home Fragrance Oils! Put about 10-15 drops in a fragrance warmer (they sell those too) and light a tea light underneath. Makes the entire house smell good no matter where you put it. I love the Fresh Cotton and Fresh Lemon scents....makes my whole house smell clean!
The oils are about $5 and last for a while and the warmers are about $10.
My cooking makes my whole house smell good. Seriously. It depends on the airflow in the house, though. Ours is pretty compact.
You know the car fresheners that you can hang on the rear view mirror
or out of sight? Some look like a pine tree. I take an old one that has
lost it's smell and I put drops of essential oil on it and hang it inside
the medicine cabinet in the bathroom. Of course, you can hang it anywhere.
Also, have something similar at the air conditioner vents. You get a nice
whiff when the air comes on.
I love candles - for my birthday one of my girlfriends bought me a Midsummers Night Yankee candle - it smells GREAT!!
I also use the eucalyptus mix by Bath and Body Works in a defuser oil.
I think the oil/reed combos are dangerous somehow- ditto to Glade plug ins. (Plugged one Glade thing into the wall a few years ago and the next morning the young, healthy hamster was dead- and no, it wasn't right next to the cage, just same side of the room.) I have terrible allergic reactions to those synthetic oils.
Right now I'm using Scentsy and it seems to give the house a nice, not too strong yummy smell. Seems the best aroma for the least amount of dangerous extras plus I don't have smoke everywhere.
There is one brand of candle that I LOVE- cannot think of the name because they aren't sold anywhere near by so I am out-but they SMOKE so much that I hate to burn them for too long. But the scent is fabulous and stays. They also make a roomspray which is lovely.. but none of those seem to last in the air for too long.
And at the holidays I use a pan of water with cinnamon and cloves on the stove.
I'm with you- just want a scent that says "I'm home". (Not the one that says "We have three teenagers and three cats plus a chinchilla and some turtles." )
:-)
I love my oil burner.. You can choose different oils that you want to use from time to time. I buy mine at Bath and Body works. Tons of Sents to choose from. Use a tea light candle, light it up. it warms the dish up and within minutes the entire house smells amazing.
I have also heard about the SCENTSY warmer although I have not tried it yet.
where i use to work we had some up right long lambs. they had a metal and ceramic rings you could place over the bulb. Filled those with oils we purchaced from pier one imports and ta da the entire house would smell great.
be careful with some of those spray sents they arent good for your LIVER!!!
I have a Scentsy warmer but you can go to Wal-mart they have it alot cheaper not only the warmer but the scents. When I have company over they always ask what smells so good. There are so many scents and they last a long time.
My favorite is Mia Bella candles. You get them from an individual consultant, so they can deliver them or ship them right to your door. They are about the same price as Yankee candles but I think they smell way better. My favorite is the Fireside candle. I have a 2 story house. I can light one candle in my downstairs livingroom and my whole house will smell good. I've also noticed that I can smell the candle, unlit, when I sit in a chair near it. I love these candles!
