What's the Best Starter SIPPY CUP?

I want to give my 7 month old a sippy of water just to play with and get used to. He is breastfed and also sleeps with a pacifier. He has had breastmilk in a bottle with a nipple similar to his paci so I don't know if the texture of the spout will be an issue or not. I just want one that WON'T LEAK!!! **please, no soapboxes about him being too young for water or a sippy, it's my decision to try it**

What can I do next?

With my two older kids (now 6 and 7) we used the gerber started cups (handles on both sides) and small to grasp. We started them on cups abotu the age of 5 months. I didnt want a spout that was hard so I got the gerber ones that have the rubber over them. My kids also liked the straw cups after that. With my youngest now 3 and half months Im going to start her with either the gerber or straw. After they are older Id go to the playtex hard spout ones.
Best of luck!

First of all, I started my youngest son on the sippy cup just before he turned 5 months. He took to it great! He prefers it to the bottle.

Also, my oldest son is 5 years old and I tried every single sippy cup out there, even ones you can only buy on the internet, looking for a non-leak. I finally decided after a couple years, that they just don't make one. Sorry to say. :(

Mine liked the nuby's and those throw away cups the best when he was starting off. They seemed the easiest for him and were really easy to clean too. He didn't like the platex kind until he was over 12 months.

I started giving my daughter one around 3 or 4 months to get use to. I may have lucked out but the Nuby brand worked out pretty well for us. The nipple is soft and the top of it is soft as well. It doesn't leak, however, now that she's 1 she knows how to make the water come out herself. It never really been a problem, just a little game she likes to play. haha Good luck and good for you for getting him started on that sippy cup! :)

I went with the Nuby brand at 1st but it leaked everywhere so now I am using the Playtex brand and it is going great.

I had to try out several kinds (at least 5 different ones, if not more) before my older son would drink from a sippy. I think it all depends on each kid. After he got the hang of it, he would drink from any sippy, though. I don't remember which one did the trick, though. I would just pick one and see how it goes.

I've only used Avent Magic Cup for my two kids. Never offered anything else to them. They used them just fine and I've had NO issues whatsoever with leaking!

when my daughter first was starting to use sippy cups, she used the ones with the straw. she learned how to use a straw really early but could not do the regular sippy cups at first so we used those for awhile. then, she started to use the regular ones better once we took her bottle away for good and then we had to stop the straw ones because she would tilt those back like the regular sippy cups and then the straw wouldnt reach the liquid! she liked the sippy cups that were softer at first and now prefers the harder ones.

I have found the Nuby cups to leak some when banged on a high chair etc..which is very likely with a little one:) I think you are right on track with the sippy cup and would suggest the Gerber or playtex starter sippys. They have handles on both sides, valves to help prevent leaking, spouts that are both softer and smaller, and tilted cups..they dont have to tip them back as far to drink. You could also remove the valve in the beginning of training, just so that he gets the idea that there is something in there worth sucking out, and then once he gets it..put the valve back in. I have also found straw cups to work fairly well in the earlier stages because they dont have to tilt them at all. You can train him by giving him water through a regular straw a little bit at a time..again until he figures out that there is something coming. Good luck...hopefully he will adjust to it fairly quickly:) ~A.~

Hi J.,

I used Munchkin for the soft- BPA free. Nuby is popular but not yet BPA free and your baby has to bite hard on the spout to get anything out of it. Munchkin is much softer.

Once he gets the hang of a cup, Playtex makes a great "hardtop" which may be what the other posters are referring to. It has one valve that is very easy to put in a dishwasher basket and so far has not leaked after 3+ months.
And I run a daycare, so the cups get thrown on floor etc. :)

*Both the Munchkin and the Nuby can tear if used by kids who can chew them with their teeth.

Best of luck!

my little girl was also breastfed and wouldnt drink out of anything other than the "nuk" cup- i copied a link incase you havent seen it but walmart, krogers, cvs all carry them- they only leak if you shake them upside down (which my little one figured out :) but she didnt drink from them very well!
