Make it an office/playroom. Get a big entertainment center that has shelves and space for a tv /video game stuff. Put a small desk in for the computer and if it was me I would put in a futon that can also function as a bed when needed.
So my son moved out to his own apartment over the week end. I'm thrilled for him. It's nice to see the children you've guided along from babies to adults stand on their own two feet.
Anyways, his room was on the main living area and I'm trying to figure out what I want to do with his room. I already changed 1 child's room into a room for the grandchildren when they sleep over. This room I'm thinking either an office (since I work from home full time) or a playroom (so I can move all the toys out of the living room). If I turn it into an office then I have to have the internet and phone lines moved. If I turn it into a playroom I have to get a tv hooked up so the older kids will be able to play video games and maybe buy a few bean bag chairs.
What do you think would be the best use of this new space?
I'm sorry I should have mentioned that in order to be HIPPA compliant both my work computer and work phone have to be hard wired so no wireless router or wireless phone. So if I make the room an office I have to pay the cable company to send someone over to physically move the wire and the phone company over to physically move the phone wire to another room.
I would not be able to use the room for 2 purposes since the computer and phone have to be in a locked room when not in use. My current set up is in my room which is on a upper floor so it's not as much of a security risk as having the computer and phone in a room on the main level with 3 points of access to the room.

I made the first room a guest room because kids come back from time to time, like holidays.
So far as running lines, the 80s called they want their technology back! :p Seriously go wireless! Must easier than running lines every time something changes. At this point even TV boxes are wireless.
Plus if child moves back, or you want to change the purpose of the room you don't have all that extra rubbish in there.
I'd get a wireless router (run around 25-100 depending on what you want) and just hook it up and have your Internet run wireless. You can and so get a wireless fax/printer as well. They run around 80 for a good wireless one you don't need cords just a wireless Internet connection and an outlet to plug it into
we just finished refurbishing one of our boys' old bedrooms into a rockin' mancave. (the dh insists it's a 'media room' since we both worked on it and love it. but it's a mancave. despite it all, i prefer the couch in front of the fireplace in the living room.)
if you DON'T have an office, that's probably more of a priority, isn't it? but if that's not a necessity, having somewhere for your kids to play, complete with vid game setups and beanbags, will be pretty wonderful.
just gear up on your snack-making skills, as you're about to become a very popular teen hangout place!

How often do grandkids come over? If not really often, I would make it a home office. Or if it's big enough, you easily could do both. Put an entertainment center on one wall with the bean bags and a desk and office items on the other. Good luck!
I would make it an office/craft room. If it were me it would be my art studio! How fun!
I'd rearrange the rooms and have the grand kids sleep room next door to their playroom. Then make the room off the living room a designated office. You can shut the door and lock it and SURPRISE!!! it still looks the same when you come back to pick up where you left off!
Sounds like too much trouble and expense to have your office moved so I would go with converting it for the grandchildren's play area. However I wouldn't have cable in there just a tv with a dvd player and perhaps they could bring their own gaming system to hook up to a tv you already have in this space.
Bean bag chairs are awesome but from my experience don't really last as long as you would like them too especially if you have some rough and tumble kids.
Congrats on your success on getting your son to adulthood. I'm looking forward to getting my last 2 there.
