I have a good one for you... Give them to local drama classes or acting groups as props, schools may take them for that use as well.
Or try freecycle.org
Good luck!
All,
I have textbooks from when I was in college (late 80s, early 90s). I can't resell them to any booksellers because they're too old. I asked my public library what is the best way to recycle/reuse the books. The librarian just told me that they don't accept outdated textbooks and didn't have any idea of what I could do with them.
I hate the idea of a book being destroyed. The books are chemistry, physics, American Literature, and Lisp (Artificial Intelligence). The subject matter in chemistry and physics definately didn't change, but the approaches/tools may have.
Any ideas of what I can do with them besides putting in my recycling bin?
Thanks

I found an organization that recycled textbooks to 3rd world countries and I mailed them the books I couldn't sell back to the bookstore. That was in 1997. I don't remember the org. but I am sure you can find one on the Internet.
Not sure exactly how to connect with them, but it's possible that schools in developing countries could use them. Perhaps contact an organization, church or college that has connections in Africa.
You might try Half-Price Books. I know they will recycle books they cannot sale.
I would try half price books also. Heck, they gave a few bucks for old VHS tapes last week!
If they have a lot of illustrations, you can either try to sell them as a "supply" for artists on sites like http://www.etsy.com (perfect for collage!), or you can donate them to art projects for kids or adults. :)
try selling them on amazon.com, you never know what people want!
You can type in the ISBN number at www.half.com and see what they are worth and try listing for sale. Personally, if they aren't worth much it's not worth the hassle of shipping to me. They do reimburse for shipping, but you still have to do it. This is where I buy/sell all my current textbooks. I don't think the old ones are worth enough though.
I agree that Half Price Books would be a good option.
Maybe you could donate them to a college that is close by. I noticed that our science dept had some older books on a bookshelf in our study lab. Just a thought.
most libraries have a place to donate books to, such as the Friends of the Library bookstore, for the Fort Worth Public Library. all the money goes back to the library. if you truly can't find this option, then try a second hand bookstore.
you can try craigslist.com or ebay. if you want to give them away just list them for free. local schools might take them as well.
