My son is 10 months and still has no teeth. He is very interested in what we are eating and is not very interested in baby food (which is ok with me), but I don't know what is safe/ok to feed him since he has no teeth. I have been giving him some soft things, pasta, cooked veggies ect...but I was wondering if any one had any ideas of good meals/food? Is meat ok to feen kids when they have no teeth? Are there any foods to stay away from?

My son was about 10mths old before he got his first tooth. I gave him anything that was soft and he gummed it. even meat as long as it was small bites. he will be a year this friday and now has 3 teeth with 2 coming in! the longer he gets teeth the better the teeth are!

My son was the same way, we would just give him nibbles and fruit cut up real small, graham crackers or other things that dissolve...we also gave him like lunch meat cut up real small and this seemed to work well they say that babies can mash things up real good with their gums...just make sure his pieces are small and he won't choke on them....hope this helps a little

Ground beef is good that can be broken up into safe bits. Also chicken, small enough pieces and he can "chew" it into a nice goo and swallow it. If you can't crush it in your mouth with just your tongue and the roof of your mouth try to stay away from it.

My almost 9 month old has been eating regular foods for a few months with two teeth only. Once she started, she snubbed baby food! I have come to learn that if I can mush it between my tongue and roof of my mouth, or if it dissolves in my mouth fairly easily, she can handle it. I have also learned she hates things the first time, but if I offer them again, she seems to love them! Here are some things she likes so far: bananas, cheerios, wheat bread (I spread with baby food veggies, cream cheese, yogurt, etc), cottage cheese, cheddar cheese, ground hamburger and turkey, cooked carrots, green beans, spagetti, potatoes, peaches, apple bits, gerber freeze dried fruits, kixs cereal....I think that is mostly her diet for now but I try new things every 4-5 days.

When my son and daughter were young toddlers I could not afford to by baby food so I had a blender at home and what ever I made for dinner for me and my husband I put in the blender seperate if we had meat, veg, and potatoes, and pureed it for my kids I fixed it then the same way I fix it now that I don't need to puree foods. My kids never really had babyfood but if you puree the food that you fix every day it is safe for them to eat. My children are 19,16,and 5 and they are still good eaters. Maybe you can try that. Hope this helps I also watch a 6mth old who is on babyfood and because he isn't mine I really can't change his diet but he doesn't seem to like the baby food as well. Have a great day! G.

If you think about it, you don't chew with those front teeth anyhow, right? So he's got no less chewing power than others his age with all 8 front teeth before they get their molars. So, don't worry about it too much. The easier way to get meet tender enough for him is to either boil it or put it in the crockpot. When you can easily pull it apart with a fork, it's done and you can just cube it up small and he'll be fine. Cube all kinds of things like cheese, potatoes (or just get frozen cubed or tater tots), cooked carrots (easy to put them in with the meat when you use a crock pot) if you can mush it with your tongue, he can eat it :)
Good Luck!

Hi Anne
It's ok if he doesn't have teeth. Babies use their gums to mash the food (no teeth really needed). It sounds like you're doing great with what you are giving him. Bascially, you can give him what you eat just cut up. With meat,I boil thin chicken breasts in chicken broth and my son LOVES it. It's soft and very flavorful. Serve with mashed potoates, pea's, cut up steamed broccoli, etc. Pork is a bit tougher so he's not a fan and I don't serve it much to him. Spaghetti with cut up meatballs is great too. Meatloaf...
Good luck. Don't stress. Just cut up what you eat into little pieces and let him try it out.

I agree with the other response. I have a ten month old who has several teeth but he really does use his gums alot to break up food. Plus, using his gums will toughen them up so when his teeth do come in the whole teething part should be easier.

As long as he's not choking on what you give him, by 9 months, they can eat most healthy foods we eat--minus the extra spices. By this age, some kids are able to chew their food like old people--with their gums! So, make sure that the food is small enough that he won't choke, (grapes and things that shape should ALWAYS be cut), and/or soft enough that he doesn't need to chew too much with his little gums and it should be fine. I recommend a cookbook called The Natural Baby Food Cookbook by Margaret Kenda and Phyllis Williams. It's an oldie but a goodie. I got my copy on Amazon.com for next to nothing!
