What to Feed a 20 Month Old When We're Outdoors

My son is 20 months old and for the most part he only eats home-made meals. So when we are outside (like at the mall, the park, the car, etc)I don't know what to feed him. Sometimes I bring him the homemade food but I don't find a place to microwave it. Does anyone have any ideas on what I can feed him that doesn't need to be reheated?

if you are talking about finger foods? one of my faves is to cook some chopped veggies, like the frozen organic peas/diced carrots, etc. and let them eat those as finger foods in the trapper thing (one of the best inventions ever). they dont need to be reheated. plain organic petit peas is always a winner. (by the way, frozen veggies are usually at least as nutritious as fresh, and often more so, depending on where you buy the fresh. forget canned.) and/or some whole wheat pasta, little ditalini, or whatever those little o's are called. just put some in a little tupperware, they are ok unheated, they keep ok for a couple of hours. if longer, just use a little insulated lunch bag. if you get him used to eating things cool or room temp, your life will be a lot easier in general when out and about. what about fruit? bananas are always perfect, natures perfect food, i buy 3 or 4 bunches at a time! already nice and wrapped up for you, too. if he cant eat it as is, just bring a spoon and scoop off a bit at a time for him. bring a peach, pear, etc with a knife and cut off very thin flat slices for him to munch on if he can. chop up some mango or some avocado, so healthy, load into your little tupperware. love those little tupperwares, im sure if you make all homemade you already have them? or the little corningware if you dont do plastic? or they have little glass pyrex with lids. cold cereal is great too, there are tons of healthy ones out there, try the health food store, trader joes, etc. if you are stuck with nothing when you are out, you can usually get a banana at 7-11, you can even do the drive through, they have apple slices, bk and mcd's, and i think wendys has mandarin oranges. mandarin orange slices are also great to bring out with you, btw. cheese sticks, you peel off thin strings for him. trying to think of more of our favorites...hmmm.... yogurt is great if you can keep it cold (the little insulated bag with an ice pack or your frozen water bottle, but not for too long with yogurt). not as a finger food, obviously. you can even bake a sweet potato, keep it in the fridge, wrap it up and bring it, then sit down with a knife and fork and eat. so healthy.

My son is the same way, but now that he is 3, he'll eat pizza and soft pretzel at the mall. This makes it easier if we are out and runing out of time. When he was younger, I always had to bring food with me. I used a thermos, and I still do sometimes. I bought one from Target, and used it to death. It kept the food warm enoughfor a couple of hours. I also bring snacks along such as cherios, fruit, teddy grahms, crackers, and sometimes even yogurt. Try the thermos, it makes life much easier.

You can put the food into a thermos and that should keep it warm for when you are ready to serve. Whatever homemade meal you are planning to bring should stay nice and warm for hours. Also when ever we go to the mall pizza is always a winner. It is not as unhealthy as fast food and it is warm if he prefers warm foods to eat.

I always have those Horizon milk boxes - they are room temp, and unless they are opened, stay fresh. I also think that peanut butter + crackers are a great snack and both stay fresh.

I don't know if you are doing totally only organic type stuff or not, but Uncrustables are those pre-made peanut butter and jellies, and they are frozen. If you shove them in your bag when you go out, they will be defrosted and ready to munch on by the time your guy is hungry.
