If you knit or crochet then a blanket is a really special gift!
For my SIL, I made a diaper bag for her. Someone had already bought the actual bag, but I put together in a basket everything that she would need to go in the bag!
One week from today I will be going to a baby shower and I would like to give something a bit different or unique. Mom-to-be is registered but I'd rather find something else rather than the pacifiers, wipes warmer etc. I would love to hear what meaningful gifts you have received. Also, we are acquaintances and not friends (yet). I am a friend of her MIL. Thanks in advance!!

My favorite gift to give is "How to Photography Your Baby" a book by Kelsh. It's an easy read and invaluable in learning how to take amazing photos. I've given it many times, and the moms always tell me a year or so down the line that it was one of the best gifts they received. It's about $25.
Take care,
B.
The podee bottle was one of the coolest things I had with my son. I didn't get it at my shower, but I bought it after my son was born and now I give it to everyone I know that is pregnant. It's a hands free bottle and it is a lifesaver, especially in the car or when my son was in his stroller. They sell it at babies r us for about $9. I used to get stopped by strangers asking what it was and everyone always said "that is so neat, I wish they had that when my kids were young". I also received two small silver containers from one of my friends that had my son's name engraved on the top. One was for his 1st curl and the other was for his 1st tooth. I thought that was cute also. good Luck!
You could also get her a certificate for an infant CPR/first aid class. EVERY parent should take that class! I had an instructor come to my house and it wasn't even expensive.
M., I love to give clothes. even unisex stuff. But my favorite part of the gift is the way i wrap it. I always wrap my baby shower gift in a cute recieving blanket and top it off with a yarn bow. I always get compliments on what a great idea for a useable wrapping. My personal favorite baby shower gift was a target gift card and the guest who gave it to me took me aside and said that is for you to spend on yourself. My beautiful baby girl got so many new gifts, how nice it was to hear that someone was concerned that i got something new. J.
I tend to buy things for when the baby is a little older and these are always appreciated. The infant stage is over very quickly so I try to get something that will last from the 6 month to 18 month age. The Bumboo chair is a huge favorite as it gets used for a long time and is very practical. Most meaningful gifts I received were handmade, such as quilts or blankets, however I got a lot of these and many are still in the cupboard unused (even after two babies). The other items I have kept are handmade toys, wooden and soft. Good luck
The best thing is something you can put together yourself, a gift basket with all the last minute things you always run to the store in the middle of the night for. Get a basket at Michaels and then go to Target or a CVS and get infant tylenol, motrin, medicine droppers, aspirators, ear thermometer, baby lotion, shampoo, things like that.
Look at Things Remembered and Pottery Barn. They have lots of different things that can be personalized. The favortie gift I gave was after the baby was born. It was a Disneyland blanket with the head of one of he charagcters attached to it and on the blanket it had the baby's name date that they were born height and weight. The mommy really loved it.
The Bumbo was one of the best gift I received since the baby can use it for pratically the entire first year, even after they learn to sit up on their own, it's their own seat. I used to bring it to the chiropractor's office with and my little one would sit it in with a snack or toy while I was being adjusted...it was perfect for keeping them in one place for a short amount of time. I also used it for some of their first solid food feedings.
Having a couple really good blankets is imperative, but I think new mom's receive too many of them and then they go unused. I wouldn't buy a blanket, even if it's personalized.
Free babysitting was another great gift. Make a cute coupon book to give alone or to top off the present and offer to babysit while Mom get's her nails done or something like that. That is a gift from heaven...
Giving something practical is always appreciated.

My sister makes the cutest diaper cakes. They're usable baby diapers stacked and decorated in a way that makes them look like a fancy cake. People choose a theme and she makes them. You can message me if you're interested.
I know the registry stuff seems boring...but I hardly recieved anything on my registry and that was the stuff I truly needed. We ended up spending a lot more money that I had planned on all the stuff we needed for the baby coming home. Now to sound ungrateful because I appreciated everything alot...I just wished we got more of the necessities rather than the extras. Hope that helps some.
Hi M., my favorite baby shower gifts were the ones that were personally made by people for my daughter. For example, someone gave her a piggy bank handmade by their brother who makes pottery stuff for a living. It is so adorable! Another favorite are the blankets that were knitted by the people I know. One even had her name in big letters coming down vertically on it. These are the items that my daughter can keep forever and are unique because they were especially made for her.
If all else fails, there is a store called Puddleducks that sells very cute baby items (I hear they are pricey though). Some of my coworkers go there to buy baby shower gifts. They got my daughter a very plush, luxurious baby blanket from there. It was pink and brown with ruffles on the outer edges. They also bought me these cute burp cloths that had a teddy bear pattern all along the middle part. VERY CUTE! Here's their info:

You might also want to look/ask around to see if there aren't any cute little baby gift stores around your neighborhood. Happy shopping!
Have you heard about BurpieBlocker? (www.burpieblocker.com) It's a new baby burp cloth that has a strap that fits around your neck so it doesn't slip off your shoulder when burping your little one. Definitely unique!
M.,
The best gift I got was a CD compilation of songs that various musicians have written/sung about their children. My friend called it "Songs for Sons." I could tell time had gone into it and that made it even more special. She even downloaded all of the lyrics and put a picture of my son's ultrasound on the cover of the booklet. Now I have a number of lullabies to sing to him every day. I also received a personalized frame from Things Remembered.
Hope this helps!
I made my daughters diaper cakes and they were the talk of the party. And they were actually used as center pieces. They are fairly easy to make and not to expensive. If your interested and would like some help, I might be able to help you make one this week. Let me know. I could send you pics if you like.
