hi moms i have a very smart 19 month old daughter. she loves to play with toys that challenger her in a way. we buy her toys that are a little old for her like at 9 months we were buying her 12+ month toys. my question is that christmas is comming up and i make a registry for my inlaws and family to buy off of for her. she will be 21 months old by christmas what types of toys would you buy for a child that likes a challenge. she also loves to pretend play and will entertain herself all day long. but i do find that 3 year old toys start to come with the small pieces and i dont want her to choke on one. any advice is great!!! thanks!!!

Dress up clothes would be perfect. Get them big so she can use them for years. Have your relatives buy like 3T or 4T.
Or what about a little kitchen to play with. A tea set would be great to. My daughter has been playing with those items for ever and still oves to play with them. She is 2 1/2.
Normally I wouldn't recommend video games but my Dad bought my kids the hand held leapsters when my son was 2 and my daughter 5. I think it is meant for ages 4 and up? Anyway, my son has really enjoyed it. He doesn't play it every day but when he does he is challenged and has learned a lot, I almost hate to say that as I really do hate video games! But it's great to have for road trips or when he appears bored and nothing else seems to satisfy. I'll say, go grab your leapster! He is 3.5 now and plays my daughters 1st and 2nd grade games.
Other than that, my kids love puzzles and books and music. Melissa and Doug has some great puzzles that will challenge! I second the dress up clothes, hours of fun and a great use of imagination!

Puzzles are always great and keeps my little guy entertained. Do you have a bench or table and chairs for her to do arts and crafts and tea parties? That's the one thing I want for my son this christmas...
Musical toys are great! Not always for us - can get noisy :)Toys R Us has a great selection that is fun for all ages. Morraca's, pretend guitar's, egg shakers, tamboreen, tapping sticks, various types of drums and bongo's, etc.
My kids also love this little musical radio that has a microphone attached. I bought it at Target and it plays songs from the "BackYardigan's". It has large buttons and they can sing along to the songs. Kids love to hear themselves and be creative.
"Leapfrog" also has a lot of really great stuff that can advance with your child.

My daughter loved (and still does) baby dolls, and caring for them. I bought her a doll, and a nursery set that has a crib, swing and a stroller. She will be 4 in two weeks, and these items are still her favorite. As suggested before, a tea set would be great too. Another thing you could try is a Weeble set. They have a variety of play sets. Again, my daughter still plays with hers. To dive into her intelligent side, my daughter loves her Winnie The Pooh Phone. It has 3 games, one is a memory game, where they follow the sequence of what characters are named, another is to "call" the character that pooh announces, and there is a third game, I can't remember off the top of my head what it is. My daughter has had this toy since she was 2, and still plays with it.

I would head to a website like toysrus.com and check out their toy selection there. They are all adjusted for age and appropriateness for cognitive level - you can even adjust up for your little one and be sure that you haven't really overwhelmed her with the toy that you purchased. I would definitely look at the 2-3 year old range for her. Congrats on having a little smarty pants! (=
