Wheezing 9 Month Old?!

My 9 month old son has began wheezing at any given time. I have no history of allergies or asthma in my family and neither does my husband. My husband thinks he is doing it voluntarily, just getting a feel of his body's abilities. Me, I'm afraid that he has asthma and we aren't taking the proper precautions because we are unaware. So, if any one has had this same experience with your children please help.

So What Happened?

Hi everyone! I just came from the pediatrician, and she said there was absolutely nothing wrong with him. I couldn't believe it. I sat there for nearly an hour going through all possible problems, but she said no, nothing. She listened to his lungs and monitored his oxygen. Nothing. Someone suggested switching to natural cleaning agents, which I am going to pursue because he doesn't sound like "nothing" is wrong. So thanks everyone for all of your sound advice!

My ten month old has the same problem. She started doing it a month ago and I took her to the doctor, they told me she had a little infection similar to asthma. So he put her on a steroid and breathing treatments for five days. She got better. However she just started doing it again over the weekend. We are going to the doctor this afternoonm, so I will let you know what they say.

I had similar problems that started when my son was around 4 months old… We had no history in our families either... I went to the doctor and they started him on breathing treatments (4-5 a day), meds & an inhaler. I was not thrilled needless to say about putting all this medication into my childs system, but I had his best interest at heart. Fortunately, I made a decision a few months later to “Go Green” and began using non-toxic products in my home.. and within literally 3-days of switching my home over… no more breathing treatments, meds or inhaler was needed.. and he has been perfectly healthy for over 2-years and has only had ((1)) cold… Honestly, my entire family is healthier and almost never gets ill…

got this information from RMBARRY.com

Are you concerned about the air your child breathes? One reason chemical concentrations are hie in some homes is that cleaning products and some personal care products release toxic vapors into the air when they are used -- and even wehn they are stored. This process is called outgassing.

It's alarming that indoor air is so full of chemical vapors because most children spend twelve to twenty hours a day in their homes. Physioloogically children are more vulnerable to toxic vapors than adults because of their higher metabolic rate. They require more oxygen, and they breathe in two to three times as much air (and therefore toxins) relative to body size than adults. Children are more physically active. This also increases their breathing rate and intake of toxins. In Addition children play close to the floor where heavier pollutants settle.

Airborne chemicals are a suspected cause of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) which takes the lives of thousands of infants each year. This may explain the documented higher incidence of SIDS in the wintertime. During the winter windows are lefe closed, decreasing ventilation, which increases the concentration of outgassed vapors in the home."No on knows what causes SIDS, but why take unnecessary chances with your infant?"

Fortunately, parents can do something to reduce their family's exposure to airborne toxins from household products. They can simply switch brands.

I did and my 18 month old had had 2 colds in his life so far. I have been here for 8 monhts now. This may be the cause of your 9 month olds wheezing. I have a 3 year old and he stayed at the doctors office his entire first year for various things mainly ear infections. He does not get sick as often any more because the air he breaths is safe.

When my baby had weezing it was due to pnemonia and I've also heard it being related to asthma and it defiantely not natural for a baby to be weezing so it would be best just to take him to the doctor. In this case it's better to take him and know for sure rather than waiting for something to happen.

Elle - I haven't had experience with this but I would suggest that you take him to a doctor. They might want to send you to an allergist or asthma specialist to get him checked out. I would not consider this normal behavior for a 9 month old and would want him checked out to make sure. My family has a history of allergies, not asthma. My 5 year old son started having a stuffed up nose pretty constantly and three ear infections within a 15 month period. He would have a cough too and, although it wasn't a chest cough, I was worried about asthma. I was in the doctor's office with him every few months and we tried several different medicines but nothing would knock it out totally. Finally we said we wanted to see an allergist/asthma specialist. They did a skin patch test and we learned that he was allergic to two different molds that grow outside and inside throughout the year. No wonder he could never seem to kick the problem. Anyway, they put him on Zyrtec (daily) and Rhinocort Aqua nasal spray and he is like a different child. I'm glad we took him to the specialist but I wish we would have done it sooner and saved him from the ear infections, etc. I don't think seasonal allergies present that young but I'm not sure. I would take him to see his peds doctor to get it checked. Best wishes, C..

You should definately take him to a doctor. My son started to wheezing right after he turned 1. Being first time parents and no history of asthma in either family we just thought it was from a cold. He got so weak from breathing he could barley lift his head. It took about 3 months and five trips to the emergency room to get him diagnosed with asthma to see a specialist. So yes get him checked out becouse if it is asthma it does not just get better without medication.

My 10 month old starting wheezing at about 5 months, I thought it would go away, but it didn't. He wound up in the hospital, and after a trip to a pulmonolgist, he was diagnosed with Asthma. My advice is to just take him to the doctor, it'll make you feel better, and if he does have the beginnings of asthma or allergies, you'll have a jump start on it. Let me know how he is...

If you think he should go to the doctor then take him! As moms we have an intuition about our children (we should, we spend the most amount of time with them!) that we need to listen to. You aren't going to hurt anything by taking him and it'll be a 'sick' visit, which usually cost less. Good luck, I hope he's okay!

I am a mother with a son who has allergy-induced asthma, and I am a nurse, too. A 9 month old cannot voluntarily wheeze. Please get him to a doctor as soon as possible to get him checked. You don't want to mess around with wheezing - it could get worse suddenly and then it would be an emergency situation. Your son could very well have allergies, even if you don't. Better safe than sorry.

I have two children (out of three) that had this problem. Please, just take him to the doctor... just to be on the safe side. With my first... I waited thinking it was just allergies or a small cold and he ended up in the hospital. Your doctor can tell you whether or not you need to worry! You will sleep better once you know!
