It seems like a kind of cold. the baby has already become sick. in fact our whole family is sick. do you breastfeed when your sick? can you make the baby sicker. I was gonna ask a professional but since our town doesn't have a real doctor we have to use the Health department and there close friday saturday and sunday. Does anyone know anything. The sickness isn't serious enough to go to the hospital. I did with my oldsest when he was about the same age and they just sent me home saying as long as there is no fever it not a big deal. There is no ferver cso i can't take him there. Any ideas? I really need to know if i should keep breastfeeing while i'm sick.

What can I do next?

haven't read all the answers, but what I did read is correct. Just to put a medical spin on it - I was pretty sick (cough & cold) when I had my son. First question was can I breastfeed my newborn and teh doctors as well as my OB said YES for all the reasons the other mommies said.

I did when I was breastfeeding, in fact, I was told it was good because the antibodies that my body was making would be passed on to the baby. Just try to take extra good care of yourself--lots of liquid and rest because it is more energy than normal to breastfeed while you're sick.

Yes!! Breastfeed!! I got strep throat when all 4 of my children were three months old. I breastfed them exclusively through it all. They never even got sick from me. (My fifth baby is 5 months old and when he was three months old, I got really sick with a horrible sore throat... NO STREP this time... whew!!) The only time I couldn't breastfeed was when I had surgery to repair a hernia. I had to pump and dump for about 24 hours but I still BF exclusively until he was 1 year old. I've BF exclusively for a year and then would go on to BF until they were 2 years old and never had to stop nursing for sicknesses. In fact, my babies hardly ever get anything more than a little sniffle. BF helps their immune systems, I think for life. I thought I was going to need another hernia repair after this baby and my doctor said I wouldn't even need to pump and dump like I did last time. But I ended up not needing the surgery. Good luck to you!!

Some recent research has shown that breastfeeding is NOT a one way street. When the baby needs certain antibodies, then it's saliva triggers the cells in the breast to pump them out....because the odds are the mom has 1.) either already been exposed to it, so her body already knows how to react or 2.) her body is currently doing this and will pump them out. All in all, breastfeeding is the best thing you can do!

Breastfeeding is excellent for baby when baby is sick. And yes - it is actually good nurse when you are sick. You give the baby antibodies through you milk, so very often baby doesn't get the bug. In this case, your baby probably caught it from someone else before you were making antibodies.

Nurse happily!

Yes, go ahead and breast feed your baby. The antibodies in the breast milk will help build your baby's immunity. If you get sick when your baby isn't you can always wear a mask and wash your hands whenever touching him or her.

You cant give your baby a cold or the flu from your milk. Just be sure to wash your hands and cover when you sneeze. Continuing to feed your baby will give him antibodies and help him stay hydrated. He will get better quicker. Just make sure you keep drinking water.

YES, you still breastfeed.

But take your baby to the Doctor.

If a baby does not feed/nurse... a baby can get dehydrated very quickly. And that is dangerous.
A baby also needs nourishment/calories/adequate intake, 24/7.

ALWAYS, keep nursing, ON-demand.

If you stop breastfeeding... then how is your baby going to get nourishment? AND if you don't breastfeed, your milk supply will diminish or stop... and your baby will not be getting proper nourishment.

all the best,
Susan

You've already got the answer you needed (you mamas rock), I just want to say great job for doing what's best for you and baby. So many stop nursing because they're either misinformed or don't seek out help. I actually know where Needles is! I'm originally from Blythe :o) Keep up the good work mama!

From what I read on WHO, unless you have HIV or are sick with cancer on chemo, or are taking certain meds, it is safe to breastfeed. In fact, you are supposed to breastfeed when sick to give them your antibodies. Lol, I think my daughter gets all my antibodies. Since she's been born, I get sick 3-4 times a year and she never gets sick.

You've already received great advice. Yes please keep breastfeeding! On a side note, you can always contact your local La Leche Leage group leader. They take special classes and have lots of knowledge about everything related to breastfeeding. Plus it's FREE! And you can call whenever you need help. http://www.llli.org/Web/California.html/ or http://www.lllofaz.org/

Good luck!

Yes you should definately keep breast feeding. I got a terrible flu when my girls were 3 weeks old and was told to keep nursing. They will get some immunity from the antibodies you pass on. Hope you all feel better soon!
