About once a month I get very moody since my daughter was born. I'm very quick to snap at my husband and son. Lately (about the last 3 weeks or so) my son has been taking the brunt of most of my moodiness. Could this be post pardum depression? How can I tell.

Hi A.,
It sounds like maybe severe pms. I am not a healthcare professional, so this is just my opinion... I had post partum depression beginning about a week after my daughter was born, and it was constant, not once a month. Also, beside being moody, I felt like a horrible mom and had trouble getting anything done including sleeping. If these things sound like how you feel, or you are still concerned that it may be ppd, call your doctor, because it can be very serious. Good luck, and I hope you get some relief soon!

I have had this since my second child, and I have a good friend who has it too. We figure it is PMS because it's for like a day or two (sometimes for a her a week) but it's always immediately before a period.
Since I've noticed it I've worked to evaluate why I'm so mad and just remain silent when I want to yell or pick a fight. I've found that not feeding into it helps to reduce the actual anger...or it could just be that with time it's improving...my daughter is 16 months.
I have this and I figured out that it is severe PMS. It occurs about 1 week prior to my period. I did not have this prior to my pregnancy. It is horrible. Watch your cycle and watch your mood and see if it correlates. I am going to talk to my gyn about it.
Hi A.,
I'm far from an expert, but I did go through PPD after both my boys were born. Irritability and moodiness are definitely symptoms, but with me it wasn't just once a month. I'd check with your doc. It sounds like the past three weeks have been tough which makes me think there is something else going in other than PMS. If you think it may be PPD, some other resources are depressionafterdelivery.com (D.A.D.) and Susan Benjamin Feingold, a psychologist in Highland Park, who specializes in PPD and is also a member of D.A.D. I've been seeing Carol O'Connor, a psychologist in Skokie to deal with my PPD and subsequent depression and she is also phenominal. If you need someone to talk to, feel free to e-mail me.

My advice is that moodiness is always two sided, biochemical and spiritual, so be sure to get therapy as well as medical treatment and you will have better results!! :o) It is rarely something you can will away for long! Life has it's storms! :o)
