My son is 12 months old and I was wondering when it is safe to start putting a small blanket in his crib. I've been using a sleep sack but he is outgrowing it (and it's a large)!!!

What can I do next?

I don't remember exactly but I think it was about 1 year when i started putting a blanket in the crib. As long as he can roll over (both ways) and throw the blanket off himself I think it should be ok.

I have used a blanket in my sons crib since he was 4 or 5 months old. Someone made him a homemade quilt. The way it is put together it has little holes in it. So I know that even it he pulled it over his head, it wouldn't smother him. The material they used is made of a courser type cotton that he couldn't suck up his nose or anything. I put that one over him first and pull it up around his shoulders and neck. Then I use a regular recieving type blanket over that one for just his lower body. Just try to find a blanket that is not real fluffy and is "breathable" and you should be fine!

Traci,
It is fine for you to put a blanket in the crib. I started putting a blanket with all 4 of mine when they outgrew the swaddling with the receiving blankets. laying a blanket over your baby is ideal at that point.
Hope this helps!

We have 5 and I always used a blanket when they could roll over. I started only at nap time, since it is a shorter window of time and you are awake to check on them. After about two weeks of nap and everything went well I started at night. I liked the other Mom who used peek a boo as a "test", try that with your baby, it will make you more at ease I am sure.

Rule of thumb is, when baby can roll over, it is safe to put a blanket in their crib. At 12 months, he should be rolling over already. :)

T.,

We have always used a blanket on our daughter. When we stopped swaddling her (about 1 month), I started using an afghan so if she pulls it over her head, there are holes so she can breathe. Some of the other ladies said when they start rolling over it's safe, but my daughter still doesn't roll over. She's just used to having a blanket on her because she always has. I think your son will be fine, especially assuming that he's pretty mobile.

It's safe to put a blanket in the crib. But if you're not comfortable with that then put him in a footed fleece pajamas. They are like blankets.

The rule ive always gone by is if your playing"peekaboo" with your baby and they can wiggle the blanket down it is safe. So at 12 months i'm sure he can just pull the blanket off of him.

as long as its not a blanket the baby can get tangled in ..like an aphgan made too large (the holes) and as long as the blanket is not so heavy that little baby arms cant move it..then anytime now would probably be fine
