My son had an ear infection and was prescribe an oral antibiotic. As a result, he received a yeast rash. Over a week ago, I called my doctor and she called in a script for Nystatin. She said to put the Nystatin on first then put desitin/aquaphor/diaper cream on top to seal in the cream. I have been changing his diaper every time he pees and putting the cream on every time. I have been washing him nightly (fragrance free) and giving him a bit of yogurt (he's 6 months old). I have changed diaper brands three times and I even let him air out every night after bath time. The problem is that he still has red welts in between his legs and it's red around his hole. I have no idea what to do from this point? I called my doctor and we have an appointment set up for Friday, but that's two days!! I want to help him, it seems to be bothering him as he cries when I change his diaper. His eczema has also flared up all over his back and tummy, could the two be connected? I have not done anything different or given him new foods in the last week. Any suggestions?
**UPDATE** Let me update this by stating that my son has had eczema since about 1 month old. We have been VERY VERY careful with his allergies and symptoms. His clothes are washed in free and clear detergent, he is bathed in only Aveeno products (they DO NOT cause him to break out), I wash his bottles in free and clear soap, I ONLY clean my home with vinegar, and I wait 1 week between trying new foods just to make sure he isn't allergic. I have switched his formula four times and there have been no changes to his eczema, the dr says it must be due to an air allergy. He takes 1/2 teaspoon of zyrtec a day now and it has really been helping. I do and have done everything in my power (and research on the internet) to help with his eczema.
Have you tried the creams for yeast infections? A friend of mine swore by Monistat. I've also heard one mom say that her doctor refers to a combo of Desitin and Monistat as 'happy tushie cream'.

The BEST diaper cream is Dr. Smith's! They have it at Wal-Mart.. Cake it on there as much as you can. Desitin/Aquaphor NEVER helped my daughter's bottom at all.. Dr. Smith's would usually clear it up after one night! For the eczema.. you can mix lubriderm lotion and cortizone cream together and that should help some.. Best of luck! =)

Yes the two are related because they are both systemic. Did you take him off all sugar? Sugar feeds yeast and makes it grow. Sugar can be anything from french fries to baby formula. White bread is sugar. Besides the simple carbs, sugars are added to a lot of things that normally wouldn't have it in them. Mayonnaise has sugar....it didn't use to. This is your first step in removing yeast. A probiotic/prebiotic other than yogurt is needed because it has gotten bad. Yogurt is a good maintenance thing but won't get rid of yeast. If you are seeing it in the diaper area his entire body is eaten up with it. Not only is it irritating to your little man but yeast, unresolved, can cause multiple health problems.
I've recommended a product called Florify in the past and it has had great results. You can also ask a clerk at the health store what is the best probiotic they have available to your guy. Tanalbit will get rid of yeast within 3 months but I'm not sure it's okay for a little one. Go to www.intensivetherapy.com and see. It's a capsule that can be opened, just like the Florify, but not sure what is recommended. Florify is safe for little ones.
Okay, strange suggestion, Tough and Tender all purpose cleaner is medicinal. I not only use it to clean with and wash my vegetables but both my daughter's have sat in a tub of water with a capful of TandT and because of the gentleness and the high grade tea tree oil in it it has healed the outer yeast issues. Like I said, if it's "there" then the entire body is eaten up with it. The TandT is simply for topical healing and comfort.

I don't know if this is something to do without consulting the doctor first, but when my son (4 mo.) had a yeast infection along with a flare-up of eczema our pediatrician had us mix the Nystatin with the Hydrocortisone and then put that mixture on the red diaper area rashes. It cleared it up right away! We hadn't been having luck with Nystatin alone.

This almost sounds like a food allergy. Have you introduced any new foods other than the yogurt? It may also be a different type of fungus.

Hi ther W.: All of my children, now grown had a yeast infection at one time or another. The only time I ever used the Nystatin was when they had the yeast infection in the mouth. Their little mouth looks whitish inside and on the tongue. The cream that the Pediatrician gave me was Clotramazole. You can only recieve this by RX so your Dr. would have to prescribe it. In the meantime you could type in old fashioned remedies for yeast infection on babies bottom. Something should come up that is not harmful to your son.
There is one that says use cold tea bags (preferably green tea) place in the folds of his little legs and diaper him. Also leaving the diaper off for a couple of hours per day will help as well.

Are you by chance using the new Pampers dry flex diapers? My son has developed a severe diaper rash that resembles a chemical burn and my doctor said it could be the Pamper brand diapers. Look it up online, there are lots of articles about it.
hi, have you tried "Butt paste", it has usually worked for me, in the early stages, now that he has welts though I would not put it on the welts, but may around all the other areas that are not open wounds. Try some cornstarch too, to help keep the area dry, Also, if he is drinking apple juice or OJ, even diluted, I would stop that. My kids could not tolerate apple juice, or OJ until later after about 2 yrs. old or so, apple juice seemed to make it burn and hurt when they urinated, -cut out anything acidic, like your baby foods, my daugh tended to have outbreaks with carrots, and any strawberry flavored snacks, or cinnamon flavored stuff, even apple sauce. if it's sensitive on their face, it will be sensitive on their bottom. My daughter had eczema starting at age 3 mons, I wish I would have switched her formula, she had a chronic rash on her face, behind her neck and folds of her ankles. We kept treating them symptomatically and with antibiotics,etc. Turns out that when I finally had her tested for food allergies, at 18 months she had mutliple. I wonder if it wouldn't have gotten that bad if I changed her formula, she was supplemented with with Lacto-free since birth, and the on it full time since about 5 months when her symptoms cont'd to get worse. Eczema can either resolve, and they grow out of it, my son did at age 18 months, when i weaned him off the pacifier cold turykey, and switched over to milk. Children with eczema, are at risk for, and can later develop food allergies and even asthma --due to the hyper immune response - my pediatric allergist told me. I even saw a dermatologist who just wanted to treat the symptoms, and didn't think my daugh had food allergies, I didn't want to dope her up just to stop the itchy symptoms, when we needed to find the cause. Usually they don't want to do allergy testing until the kids are much older. But, it explained why my daugh kept throwing up randomly, and we couldn't find any pattern-turnas out she was allergic to peanuts, and now most nuts, eggs, and shellfish, and has many food intolerances/sensitivities. So watch the symptoms carefully, keep a food diary, and be proactive, and never give up searching. My daugh's facial rash also cleared up after I weaned her off the pacifier and she switched over to milk, at about 12 -13 months, it cleared up in about 1-2 weeks. I also wondered if she was sensitive to the chemicals from the

Do you think that it may be caused by a food allergy and not yeast? I don't know, but it seems like it might be worth exploring. My toddler had eczema as a baby and it turned out to be because he was allergic to dairy, which I was passing along in my breastmilk. Once we figured that out, his eczema went away. He did not have a diaper rash though so I don't know if that could be related or not.

Please stop using all those products with such harsh chemilcals they are such a waste(yes even the fragrance free hypo-allergenic !5 dollar bottles i tried it all) my 11 month old had the same thing i use and all natural brand now its has done miracles with ear infections rash teething eczema my older son has asthma you name my sons has been through it!!! go to this website www.healthyforyourfamily.com its has some really great info and tells you where to get the natural products at!!! trust me i have been there and i am so glad right now that my son is teething its so much better than the last time!!!!

DO NOT "seal in" the nystatin cream with desitin. Only use the nystatin and that's it. The Desitin will prevent it from breathing and seal in the yeast, not help get rid of it.
As for excema, I had 4 kids with it, and I wasn't one to use all the alternative over-priced products on the market. It's hereditary. If what you're doing, and you're doing *alot* to not aggravate it, isn't working, I hate to tell you this, but it does run in families, so just use a little topical benadryl or hydrocortizone product just on those areas needing it. Giving a 6month old Zyrtec is crazy, I'm sorry. You seem like the kind of mom who would rather avoid drugging your infant, so the topical I would use. He'll grow out of it by the time he's approximately preschool age, or at least it'll get better over time. That's just how these things are sometimes. I wouldn't get too worked up over the whole adhd/autism/vaccine discussion. If you feel better about it and if you can remember back that far, or ask your mother if you ever had a reaction to any vaccines. Same with your son's grandmother if his father had problems as a child. People forget that our kids get their immunities and similar physical reactions to the environment from us. My husband was an 'excema kid' and I had a touch of it. I was (and am still)also adhd. These things run in families. They just didn't know how to properly diagnose them back in the day. People just got labeled. To say they're vaccine-related has been an on-going debate but I haven't in 19 yr of being a mom seen evidence of it. But do research too because you never know. Also, If you or your husband did have a bad reaction, stay away from vaccines til your child's at the end of the age range they recommend and check the lot numbers with the Vaccine awareness group in Vienna,VA before proceeding. Being reasonably cautious is praiseworthy. Keep in mind too that those mmr shots that were problematic have since the 90's been formulated differently because
they were causing some reactions. Back in the early 90's I would refuse my kids from getting the DTP, and only the DTAP, because of the number of bad reactions kids were having. Dr's gave me so much grief, yet NOW, the DTAP, is the standard practice. Things eventually turn around, you just have to be dligent in the meantime.
if he is on juice pull him off of it. get nystasin oral and topical. use arbonne brand rash ointment its the only thing that even somewhat helps yeast infections. my son had one for a year and a half I couldnt get rid off. use sensative wipes give a baking soda bath. you have tried everything else the only thing you havent tried is monistat 7 which wont work if the nystasin isnt working. jock itch med and athletes feet med. use one or the other but not both. dont feed him fruit. worst case senerio if you can find them cloth diapers. which I couldn't find when mine had his. be fore warned the jock itch or athletes sprays will scare him when you put them on him. the sound scares them. but get a second round of nystasin oral and topical.
if it is just diaper rash a prescription medication called Vusion is amazing. My daughters rash literally disappears after one application Good luck
For my son, Nystatin never worked to get rid of his rashes, and I would go as far as saying it made them worse. Go buy some Vagisil or any other over the counter yeast infection cream.
Yeast infections can be hard to get rid of. Add a tablespoon of plain yogurt to his bath water. You might have to use a plain wash cloth and warm water to wash up between changing s for awhile since his skin is so sensitive. Some liquid Mylanta rubbed onto the skin will help neutralize the acid. Aveeno has a colloidal oatmeal bath that is very soothing to the skin. I think you're doing a great job. It just takes some time and it's frustrating when the problem lingers.
I have never understood why Nystatin was prescribed for yeast infections, as yeast thrives on sugar and Nystatin contains sugar.
You need to figure out what he's reacting to, but getting rid of the yeast and hten figuring out why he's reacting so much now. Its likely he was allergic to the medicine, and may have triggered an allergy for him that was before not triggerd.
You need to purchase a good probiotic for him. Get the refridgerated break open caplets and break the caplets into his food or milk or right onto his tongue a few times a day. Its a probiotic, or a good bacteria. It will fight the bad bacteria and clear out hte yeast.
Then you need to find some gentian violet. Its behind the counter at the pharmacy. Its BRIGHT PURPLE but you put it all over the rash in his diaper area. Use a q-tip or cotton ball but never re-dip it once its touched the yeast, get a new one to re dip. Thsi will take a few days to wash off, and WILL stain clothes so take caution.

I don't know alot about eczema but when my son has bad diaper rash we stop the diaper creams and use cornstarch powder. It helps overnight in terms of redness and inflammation and in a couple of day it is always nearly healed. I like the cornstarch as it helps to keep it dry down there and you don't have to touch the rash, which just causes him more pain. Good Luck for the little guy!

Shaklee makes a great organic diaper rash ointment that will clear up the rash. Their baby lotion would probably clear up the eczema.

I know your pain. When my baby daughter had a bout with diaper rash, I would put her to bed (nap or overnight) without a diaper on. Yes some mornings it would be a messy poo, and other times a wet pool, but it did the trick. I would use the ointments for day time/diaper use.
my daughter who's 2 1/2 now has had similar issues since birth. here is what we use: pampers baby dry diapers only, as any other brand or even pampers line makes her horrible - even pull ups. for allergies try allergra (by prescription) instead of zyrtec. i found it manages the ecezma much better than zyrtec. my 9 mo has been on it since 6 mo so it is safe - she takes 1/2 tsp 2x day. for the ecezma there are many prescriptions available. we have tried at least 3. the one we are using now is Desonide 0.0005 Oint 1X15 Gm By Taro Pharmaceuticals Usa Inc. you can use that 2x a day on the affected areas and aquaphor 6x a day. for the diaper rash alternate dr smiths and vusion. the vusion is expensive, but it works well. we did nystatin and it didn't work for us. also, quit using any type of "wipes". use plain water and a wash cloth. the wipes, even unscented sensitive ones, aggravate the skin even more. i agree to cut out the sugars/ fruit juices or limit intake to 1 small glass a day. it really makes the yeast worse.
i would say that the 2 issues are not connected except that his poor body is fighting off the allergies so it is more susceptible to other issues. good luck. i've been through a lot of this so let me know if you have more questions. i'd be happy to answer.
