When Should I Start Bringing My 28 Month Old a Dentist?

Ok, my little boy is 28 months, but only has 10 teeth!
He didn't get ANY teeth until he was 17 months (and the first ones to come in where the 2 top teeth!).
I have some friends that have been talking about bringing their kids to a dentist soon. I think a dentist would laugh me out of his office if I took my little boy with only 10 teeth to see him/her!
When do you start bringing kids?

What can I do next?

Hi J.,

I work as a certified/registered dental assistant. We usually see children at age 2-3 for there first visit. A few months ago I bought my daughter into the office where I work to have her teeth looked at. She has 10 teeth right now. We don't do much for them at this age. A full dental exam and count the teeth and let them get the feeling of being in the dental chair. We also polish the teeth. My daughter was wonderful except she didn't take well to the noise when we were polishing.

Make sure you brush his teeth morning and at night. Make sure that you do it. I don't know if your son is going through this "I do it" right now or not, but my daughter is. I let her do it and then mommy does it. No fluoride toothpaste right now unless he is really able to spit out.

Hope this helps and if you are concerned about what your dentist thinks talk to him/her about it. Do you have a dentist? Do you plan on taking him to your dentist or a pedodontist?

I waited till my daughter was two to take her to the dentist. Big mistake. She ended up having a cavity between her two front teeth that required a root canal. It was a specialized pediatric dental practice and they were great.. But still, it was so difficult to go through. They had to sedate her, but she woke up when the noise of the drill bothered her. How horrible it was to see my baby girl, strapped into a papoose, screaming and struggling... She's 12 1/2 now and still terrified of dentists. Take your child now.. The sooner he gets used to the dentist (and has a good exam), the better.

I started taking both of my children when they were 2.
I also live in NJ and I LOVE the dentist that I take my children to. Her name is Dr. Anne Schultz and she is a pediatric dentist in Ridgewood, she was reccomended to me by 3 different people and they were all right about her. GOOD LUCK!!

My son 2 1/2 yrs old. I took him to the dentist today because he had fallen and bumped his teeth. They told me this is the time, anyway, to start bringing him to the dentist. My friend's daughter went for the first time before she turned 2. Definately go to a pediatric dentist... and call and ask them what they recommend.
