When Someone Makes Money 'Selling' a Good Message...

Hi Moms!

This is a topic I often struggle with... when people 'sell' an otherwise good message, and they make money off of it, there is a huge backlash, as if the money invalidates the message.

Example- televangelists. I have a lady in my office who is crazy about Kenneth Copeland ministries. Other women in the office think that it is a cult of sorts, that this guy is only after money, he keeps getting more & more wealthy, and no man of God should be that wealthy.

Another example- Dave Ramsey. He is making millions helping people save money. Ironic much?

Don't get me wrong- I'm a huge Dave Ramsey fan, I just graduated Financial Peace University and I have tickets to see him live in October. But, I sometimes wonder if I'm not following some mindless propaganda to make this man rich.

As far as wealthy pastors, I think I'm of the opinion that they have a right to be wealthy too, as long as they are not taking riches from the tithes of the church. That's just plain wrong.

I did used to be a big Dr. Phil fan, though, and at least for me, he lost a lot of his credit when he started mass-producing shows that had basically no point. He used to help people, now he just parades people's problems to the public. Sell-out.

What do you think? Do you think that fame and fortune discredits people with otherwise great messages? Why do you think this is? Do you think that religious figures should be as wealthy as some of them are?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Another perfect example- The Biggest Loser. It's like one huge commercial now. Ugh!!

Momof3girls- if your reply had anything to do with my actual post, it would be great! *I* make plenty of money have no desire to be famous, so this has nothing to do with me, per se. READ the post.

I think when people get to a point where they have earned so much money, they lose touch with their roots. Their message is no longer relevant to them personally or so it seems.

I had to laugh at the 'like Oprah' ref... LOL Any person who buys their OWN network and production company named for themselves and gives their friends who provide no actual benefit to society shows of their own is such a joke to me. Talk about losing touch with where you are from! Still, she is a prime example of capitalism and I'm all for that!

What is wrong with people making money? Money does fabulous things for lots of people. I am only against people making money that do it illegally or if they do bad things with the money. Instead of complaining about someone making lots of money why don't you work your butt off and figure out how you can make lots of money. None of the people you mentioned were overnight successess. They worked their fingers to the bone and were motivated and became successful. Now ask me about the pro-football player who is paid millions at the age of 20 and snorts it all up his nose while driving his bentley and never gives a dime of it away and then goes bankrupt; those are the people I have a problem with. Not the ones out there that are doing good by people and trying to help people.

Just had to say that i went to highschoo, with kenneth copelands son. He was dreamy.

I think too much money sort of discredits anybody if their message is a unified peaceful one. UNLESS they give lots of it away to the needy, like oprah.

I think religious leaders have every right as anyone to earn as much money as they can. Now, having said that, there are plenty of fraudulent evangelists out there. But, I also think, if someone is really that blindly ignorant that they actually think someone can put their hand on someones head and heal them, then they deserve to lose their money to that person. It is ridiculous how often someone will just schill out their money to others because they believe an act.

Oh, I am so with you about Dr. phil. Most of his shows now are meaningless!!

They are businessmen, not the Messiah! They have a right to charge a fair market price for the products & service they offer, just like anyone else.

You don't *need* Dave Ramsay to learn wise financial planning and you don't *need* Kenneth Copeland to get closer to God. Think of them as an "option" or "tutor"!

I dont like when anybody sells out. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw a Robert Dinero credit card commercial. It makes me take them less seriously as an artist. That being said, everyone has to make a living. If someone wanted to pay me that kind of money to package my message and sell it to them, I'd be 1st in line. I think if they temper all that profit with a healthy dose of philanthropy I can take it much better. For example, Joel Osteen and Joyce Meyer both make a lof of thier materials available at no cost and they give a lot of money not just to the church, but to other charitable organizations. I don't feel they are in it just to make a buck.
