When to No Longer Use the Changing Table

My daughter is 14 months old now and hates to be changed. When we put her on the changing table we have to give her a toy or she will flip in a second. She will not just lay there for a diaper change at any time during the day. When do you usually stop using the changing table? I am curious what you do with the stuff that you need to change them with if you do it in the floor or on the bed. I still use the wipe warmer...it is also alot easier on my back to use the table.......any suggestons?

What can I do next?

Hi L.

I stopped using it with my 1st once he could crawl and flip on me (6 months)...I never used one with my 2nd, I just used the couch or floor :)
They are so hard to change once they are mobile cause even toys cannot distract them.
Good Luck to you.

I quit using the changing table when my daughter wiggled around too much also. You could change her on the bed or on the floor.

I also discovered that Pampers has "easy-ups." They are diapers, but you can pull them on like underwear. At her age it's not necessarily to get her into potty training, but it is a LOT easier to change a diaper with her standing up!

I have a 14 and 1/2 month old also. The flipping and wanting to crawl away is normal, however, I never used the changing table. I lay her down on my bed. If she pooped then I have a mat that I lay her down on so it doesn't get on my bed.
I just change her quickly in order to not stir up a fuss from her while changing and sometimes I hand her a wipe and that occupies her so I can get her changed.

My son is 18 months old and I still use a changing table. I have "trained" him not to roll over several months ago by swatting his leg and after a few times of that he stopped trying to roll over. I know that's not what most parents want to do but they have to learn that you are in control and just because they don't want to lay there doesn't mean they get their way.
I can't imagine that even if you did change her on the floor that she would stop trying to roll over.

Girl, I have the same problem with my 13 month old son and he's been like that since the day he was born. We have never used a changing table. Usually, we change him on the bed or couch and yes, we have to give him something like a toy, to keep him occupied or he will just squirm until we're done. He's extremely active and curious about EVERYTHING!!! We are very busy when he's around making sure he doesn't get into anything that's harmful. Sometimes after a bath, I will let him run about naked for a minute or two. He thinks this is so funny!!! But, it calms him down enough where I can get the diaper on him. However, sometimes it backfires on me and he'll pee in the floor, but who hasn't had that happen with a little boy? Good Luck!

Here is a Politically Incorrect response. After gasping in horror at the suggestion, you can delete it. The changing table isn't really the question so much, it's the changing itself, which she needs to be still for. You need to train her to not flip around during the changes (whether on the floor, bed, table, etc). Tell her to be still (a toy is fine, too), but if she won't quit flipping, swat her thigh or rear (depending on which is feasible). In other words, make her be still. It's not that different from most things -- they need to obey when you say "no" or something else. OK, you can throw out this old-fashioned, unacceptable advice now, but it worked for my kids.

I have never used a changing table. I always bumped my elbow on the wall trying to keep my son on top of it. Because my son was sooooo wiggly I began throwing a towel on the floor and changing him there. It may not be the prettiest thing to do, but in my world it's whatever works. Now I have a 10 month old daughter and I have always changed her on the floor. I flip her over, change the diaper and tell her "GO" and she flips back over and crawls away. My son calls it her pit stop.

I do not know many mothers who acctually use a changing table. If they do, it is when the child is very young then when they can wiggle more, most stop using the table by 3-6 months.

I stopped using it with my daughter when she was about 6 months (crawling and rolling over). I always just put a blanket down on the floor to change the twins, it was just easier for me to stop wherever I was and do it since there were 2 of them.

This age they will fight diaper changes, because they do not want to be still. If mine were wet I'd let them "help" buy holding the wipes or the new diaper, a toy or book might work too or a hand held mirror for them to look at themselves in and keep occupied while you are changing.

Good luck

i'd go ahead and stop using it and transfer to the floor or your bed with a cover laid down. it gives you a little more room to keep her in check. if that fails go to standing diaper changes. in either case, if she's mobile, introduce the potty chair now so she can start getting used to it. just let it be there and let her follow you to the bathroom so she can start getting used to the idea, for a smoother transition later when she's ready to potty train.
