I have a quick question for all of you! I really don't remember when I started my oldest child w/this or not! My 11 month 2 1/2 week old boy is still drinking formula, when is the right moment to start giving him whole milk? at exactly 1 year old or can I start now, since he is almost 2 weeks away?

Thank You Ladies!!!! God bless!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

So, we have successfully changed his milk now. He had a lil bit of diarreah in the beggining when being mix w/his formula, but now he is pooping still soft but no diarreah, he is drinking fine. THe only concern I have is that he is crying a lot at nighttime, so, I stopped giving him cereal in his milk at night yesterday just in case. We'll see! but during the day he is fine...maybe is teething..don't know...but thank you anyways all of you for your sweet comments!

One year old seems like a good time to make the change. I remember my mother in law telling me to give my son one feeding of Pedyalite and then make the change because he would be so hungry he would accept whatever milk I'd give him. Or to start the new milk as the first feeding of the day. All three of my kids loved milk, so I had no problem in that department. Good luck

I started mixing 1/4 whole milk with 3/4 formula for about a week. Then, I mixed 1/2 whole milk with 1/2 formula for another week. Then, I mixed 1/4 formula with 3/4 whole milk for about a week and then all whole milk! I started at 11 months 1 week so that she would be on all whole milk by 12 months. It worked really well and helped her little body not to be shocked by a full switch-over. Good luck!

My ped said I could have started my son at 9 months, I started him at 10.5, you should be overly fine to switch to whole milk now...

Noelia,
I think your baby is fine to start whole milk. Although, I would start with just a little bit during the day to watch for allergies.
Of course, check with your pediatrician. But 12 mos is when they usually recommend starting whole milk.

My first son we switched around his first birthday. my 2nd we switched around 11 months. I remember around 11 months with my 2nd after we ran out of formula not really wanting to spend money on another can so that was what sealed the deal for us! My boys are 4 and almost 3 and they are both very healthy!

actually i have a 4.5yo daughter and a 2.5yo son. my dr told me to start integrating my daughter on whole milk when she was 9mos old. and i did and she stopped drinking formula all together. so she was on whole milk since 9mos old. and i put my son on it when he was about 8.5mos almost 9mos old. and they are both very healthy, rarely sick and very bright children. i think that it is perfectly fine to put your son on whole milk now as long as he is still getting the nutrional value that he needs

I was just reading a book last night that recommended 1 year as the time to transition to milk. Of course like with most things, that is probably flexible by a few weeks or so.

I would start weening him off the formula now, some babies don't like the taste of milk, but i went cold turkey with 3 out of my 5 kids. I put it in their bottle and warmed it in the microwave for about 15 seconds and shook it up and had them taste it and my youngest son who is 18 months just switched to whole milk from stage 2 formula, just because i needed to feed him a higher calorie formula because he has a CHD but i went cold turkey with him and he loves the milk. Try a couple bottle of milk only to see if he will take it, he might push it away at first but i sang a little song to distract him and now no problems, thank god lol because i was paying 28 dollars a week for his formula!!! But if he doesn't like it then just slowly start mixing some with his formula the first week with decreasing the formula and by the end of the week he should be on just the milk. Good Luck!

I formula fed my last child due to breastfeeding issues so I was very, very excited when I no longer had to purchase formula! My ped said my son could begin whole cow's milk at 12 months. As he neared his 12th month, I began mixing a little milk with the formula and continued mixing milk into it until the can was gone. It very well may have been a week or two shy before his 12th month but that is okay. It doesn't have to be exactly at 12 months...it's just a guideline time frame so to speak, so I would say it's totally fine. Do what feels right and enjoy not having to spend money on formula anymore!

HI - we did it around 1 yrs and it helped up transition to the sippy cup. we fed her milk in the sippy first then offered her a bottle with formula She was too full so she refused the bottle and voila - weaned herself from the bottle as a result.

My ped said is she was eating well - no worries. the iron is the biggest change from formula to milk. if you feed iron rich foods (cherios are great) also feed with a vitamin c food (fruit) for max absorbtion.

Yeah, I say go ahead (please note I am just a mom not a pediatrician though) I started a month before, and my ped was very ok with it. You might want to do it gradualy. If you child is normally eating a 6 oz bottle, make 4 oz of formula and replace 2oz of formula today with whole milk (or whatever milk you plan to use) then maybe 3/4oz on Saturday…and etc until the bottle is completely whole milk. This way they also slowly get the cooler feeling too. You also might want to try and wean the bottle as well...both are things "they" say should occur around the age of one. Personally I feel the sooner you do it, the easier, its not a habit you want to be breaking with a strong willed 2 year old.

your pediatrician will probably tell you at his 1 year check up that he is ready for whole milk.

I see no reason to start on the milk now. I do know most pediatricians say 2% milk but I gave mine whole. That was ages ago though as they are all grown & now have their own.
