I have worked for the airline for years and no one I knew ever knew how to find the sweet spot of when to buy the cheapest fares. Argh. Don't suppose you have any great friends who work for the airline with flight benefits. (Nowdays, we have to be so careful in who we allow to use it because it could cost us our lifelong benefits if they acted badly or didn't follow the standby rules to the letter, no matter what). Presume you don't have award points (American Express, Visa, etc) that would cover it)? I really don't know if anyone can sell their Aadvantage points or give them to someone else nowdays. If you know a business traveller well, you could ask. Some of them travel so much they don't want to use them for flights. Again, since 9/11, I don't know the new rules on this. The day you return also controls the cost. Try out farecompare.com (a regular guest on Good Morning Texas). Know what city you want to fly into of course.
You could try calling their reservations to see what day and time the best prices hit. Any suggestions they have... However, I think it is something like Tuesday night and you can't wait. But don't forget to ask about bereavement fares too!!
Find a flight that that works for you then call the airline directly and explain what has happened. They typically have unpublished "bereavement" or "compassion" fairs for exactly this kind of thing. You'll probably have to supply some information about your mother to get the rates (hospital or funeral home)
You might have to spend some time calling around because you have to book through the airline directly and they don't really publish what the rates will be.
Good luck.
EDIT: This has some information about these policies. http://www.windowseatblog.com/2009/03bereavement-compassi...
I do not have an aswer or your question but I did want to say I am very sorry for your loss. You and your family will be in my thoughts.
Sorry for the loss of your mother...Airlines have greviance/emergency flights for situations like this, you can start calling the airlines and see what they offer. If not Expedia seems to be the most resonable that I've found online.
I had to go to Switzerland on an emergency basis last November. I booked directly through Swiss.ch website (Swiss Airlines). It was the cheapest fare by far, much cheaper than Expedia, Travelocity, etc. For Germany, I would try the Lufthansa site.
I fly a lot and always look for flight deals. DELTA has a last deal offer every week. You can also got to Farespotter for last minute deals. If you have a friend with Rapid Rewards from Southwest, they can assign their award to you. Jet Blue also allows their rewards to be assigned to another person. Stay away from U.S. Air. They are the least generous and charge you a rebooking fee of $150.00 if you have to do that. So sorry for your loss. I hope you get to your Mom quickly.
www.cheapair.com I do not know where in Germany you are going but put in a search for DFW to Berlin and started at 850 round trip ... but you have to call in if you want to leave today those flights were leaving tomorrow and some departed from LOVE.
Try www.vayama.com We booked our vacation through there after about a month of monitoring prices, and they provided the consistently best fares.
I have heard that there are airline "bereavement" fares, but from one friend's experience, they didn't discount much (this was a domestic flight); you could try calling the airline directly after you have a sense of the going rate.
That said, given oil prices, all flights are more expensive. Good luck finding a reasonable ticket(s), and so very sorry for your loss.
When my grandpa passed away I booked on travelocity (last minute specials) in the morning and flew out in the afternoon. No glitches, everything went perfect and it was fairly reasonable. So sorry for your loss.
