My five-year-old daughter took swim lessons when she was three through Miller's Swim School at Indian Springs Country Club and it pretty much set us back in her wanting to learn to swim. Not only did it rain every night and keep the outdoor pool pretty cold so that she wasn't comfortable getting in, but they also used some overly agressive teaching principles that made her more afraid of the water after the lessons than before. They had them jumping in off the side on the second day and then over half the class didn't want to participate the next days after that. They ignored the effect this had on the kids and proceeded to line them up to jump off the diving board on a later day. I didn't want to teach my daughter to quit so I made her go the entire two weeks, but she cried on the way there every day....... it was terrible! The other moms were dealing with the same thing. I know they have to get over their fears, but they were only three! I don't remember being practically forced to do anything I wasn't ready for when I took swim lessons as a child, and I know I was older than that. So anyway, just wondering if anyone knows a great place or instructor I could contact to try this out again, now that we've waited two years!
My one year old went to Jane Whitt swim school at 45th and Peoria (Wright Elementary) and we really liked it. The pool was always a nice temperature and Jane Whitt was a great teacher. Check her out.
The summer area programs are totally different than actual Miller Swim location at 68th and Mingo. When my son was 3 I took him to the same place you did. HE WAS TRAUMATIZED. When my daughter was 18mths old I wanted to get her into a good program so she would not be afraid. I called Miller Swim school and talked to a supervisor about their program there. They convinced me to bring both my kiddos during the school year program. Alex was 6 and was terrified of getting all the way in the pool. So I reluctantly signed them up and explained to his instructor what had happened and that I wanted him to gain their trust before they make him do anything. He started with the 3 years olds. For the first 2 weeks(one lesseon a week) he sat on the side of the pool with his feet in the water. (Which was fine with me.) In couple of months he was bobbing his head under because he wanted to. Within in about 6mths he could swim under water no problems.
Oh. my daughter turned out to be part fish. She was swimming underwater by 2.5.
My kids are now 11 and 6. They love the water. I keep them in Miller during school year to keep them current and they enjoy it. This summer I have both of them in the SwimTulsa program. I think 2 week summer programs are too short to really teach a younger apprehensive kid to be comfortable in the water and swim. My kids enjoy working on different strokes and techniques that make them stronger and faster swimmers.

My son has been taking lessons through the SwimTulsa program for the past 2 summers at the Union 6th & 7th Grade Center on 61st between Mingo and Hwy 169. He has really enjoyed them and I am pleased with the progress he has made. It is an indoor pool and I have never heard any complaints about the temp. of the water. They do two week sessions in the summer, but I think there is only one more week left of the final session, but they do night sessions as well.
