So after changing her list 4 times and telling Santa that the only thing she really really wanted was an American Girl doll, Santa has taken back some other things and gotten the darn doll. But the doll was quite pricey and I really don't want to spring for $30 outfits for the doll. Can anyone recommend a cheaper brand or a reputable place or website that sells clothes that fit the doll that won't break me?
I too couldn't stomach $100 dolls. Last year Santa brought two generic 18 inch dolls she found on ebay for a total of $25! And I found a woman who sold very nice homemade clothes...many pieces for $12 or so.
Oh I got this one down! One of the families I babysit for got my daughter an American Girl Doll this summer for her bday. So all she wants is clothing and accessories for it. Here are the places that have the 18" doll clothing that fit it:

Try Ebay, Etsy or even Amazon (there's a "store" on Amazon called "Silly Monkey" which sells pretty cute 18" doll clothes - I just bought a whole bunch for my girls for Christmas). I cannot and will not buy doll clothes directly from American Girl - they are just WAAAAY too expensive!

etsy.com has some cute hand made outfits, when I was little I would pick some out at our local craft fairs, ebay might have some, craigslist, most stores carry dolls similar in size to american girl dolls and will have accessories for the doll they carry. She will enjoy her doll! I loved mine :) still have them when my nieces are older they will each get one since I have boys.
Any clothes made for an 18" doll will fit. You can find affordable outfits (and other doll gear) at Target and Toys R Us that I have seen. I have even seen doll clothes at Michaels that fit. The key is 18" doll :)

I have seen clothes at craft fairs, but I don't think they are cheap either. Maybe look on Craig's List, or in the Pennysaver, in case anyone is selling their "retired" items. Good luck!
The American Generation doll has really cute clothes that are the same size as American Girl Doll clothes. You buy them at Target.
I get doll clothes for my granddaughters' dolls on eBay. The prices vary, but they're usually better than the AG stores' prices! And I like the quality. Many 18" doll outfits at Michael's or Target will fit the AG dolls, too.
