Hi
I am looking to donate a lot of clothing. I dont want it to go places like Goodwill, that turns around and sells the clothes. I know they then take the money to help others, but I am looking to donate to people in need. I want them to get the clothes, shoes and purses. I have been searching on the web for places in my area, like homeless shelters, but I am unable to find any. So I was wondering if anyone should know of any places around the Tinley Park area?
Thanks
J.

Good morning J. W. I can give you my churches address which is Showers of Blessings Deliverance Center. We are located on the southside of Chicago, in the Englewood area. This area is very desparate and is always in need of clothing help and food donations. My Pastor and his wife might drive to pick up your donation, but you have to call them first. We do have a web site that is currently under construction if you desire to check it out, showersofblessingsdc.org. The number is listed on the site. If you have trouble getting in contact with my Pastor, please let me know and I will contact him directly. I am his secretary. We will not sale your clothes, but we will give them away. We have received donations from Craiglist. You can check out the listing on Craiglist as well, which we need to update...BIG SMILE... It was listed on November 25, 2008. I hope it's still there. This days you cannot be to careful, this is why I am giving you my church information to let you know that I am being truthful. Take care.

You may want to try Together We Cope. They are out of Tinley, I believe near 167th and Oak Park. I know they help those in need and also have a food pantry. I don't have the number off hand, however you can google it and read about their services.

What about a woman's shelter? I am new to the area so not sure where there is one in Tinley or nearby (but I think there's one off Harlem and 187th maybe), but when I lived in the city, I would take my old work clothes to a nearby shelter that houses women and children only. Most of those women and children left their homes for safety taking nothing with them besides what they can carry. Just think these women can use can use casual clothes plus professional clothes needed to go on job interviews, etc. Not to mention clothes and toys for the kids.

There used to be a shelter for women who've been abused on the corner of Ashland and Lake St. They would accept clothing for the women to get back on their feet and to go on interviews. I know that the shelter is still there, I don't know if they still take clothing. Call chicago's 311 for their number.

If you are involved with a church, you could contact them or churches in the area. They sometimes have families that they sponsor or also know of families within the parish that could use or need the items.

I also work for a non profit org, that has a domestic violence shelter. It is in Crown Point, IN. Many of these women come with their children with on the clothes on their backs. You could try something like that in your area.

Let me know how it goes.

What came to mind is St. Vincent DePaul which operates out of many Catholic Churches and has many "free thrift shops". In many areas, they can do a pick-up or they have local drop boxes.

About a year ago, I had a death in the family. My mother-in-law had some very lovely dressy/newer outfits, but she also had a lot of nice and clean 2 piece casual, loungewear, etc.... I divided up her clothes in three different categories...

For the dressy/newer clothes, my sister knew someone at her church who was about the same age as my MIL and about the same size. She was so blessed to receive them - she loved dressing up at Church and the new clothes were a wonderful addition to her limited wardrobe The second group - "casual outfits/house dresses,etc..." were donated to a nursing home in Joliet and they were so grateful to distribute them - so many people just don't get a lot of visitors. The third group of clothing, I just donated to AMVETS. They pick up items, regularly, at my home, every 6 weeks.

Here's the name of the nursing home but I'm sure others in your area would appreciate them too:

You can also call shelters but they would have to have the space and resources to be able to sort and distribute your clothes. If your clothes were broken down into type (i.e. casual, dressy, etc...), size, gender, etc... it would help. Daybreak Shelter, in Joliet comes to mind but not sure what they would accept. (see link below). They are affiliated with "Catholic Charities" on the link below:

Good luck.
