I have found that earrings in stores are rather pricey if you are going to get something of quality, like from a department store. I NEVER buy the "cheapie" earrings from stores like spencer's because I they don't identify what they are made of usually. I went shopping for some for my newly pierced daughter for a Christmas present, and couldn't find anything I trusted at any of the kids' stores either.
I ended up going online to Overstock.com (which I have shopped at many times in the past for other things, and have always been happy with my purchases) and got her some small pearl studs and some sparkly earrings (with surgical steel posts) very inexpensively. And the earrings are beautiful (I want to borrow them even).
Check out what they have to offer. They will tell you what the materials are and the shipping is fairly quick and very inexpensive.

Go to a reputable jewelry store and buy nice stuff. Pay the price for gold post, or surgical steel.

A tattoo shop. They offer all kinds of jewelry, mainly body jewelry, but they do have a selection of earrings which sound like what you are looking to purchase.

Any piercing/tattoo business with have them. They might not have a wide selection or your style, but you might be able to find something.

From what I understand, steel post earrings won't hurt your ears, even for people who are allergic to .925 silver earrings, so I'd look on QVC and HSN. QVC carries Steel by Design (their brand) and HSN carries Stately Steel (their brand). If you go to www.qvc.com or www.hsn.com you can find them, and they are usually cheaper than silver earrings and you know what is in them. Good luck!
