We are trying to find a good, reasonably priced summer vacation. We are contemplating Disney, but the crowds and July heat don't much appeal to me; also, the prices have gone up, and any flight at a decent time is a bit much. What are some good beach vacations? Any good packages flying out of Dallas? I think Mexico is out b/c i've heard you need a passport now & that it is a long wait. We like places that have good restaurants, good shopping, and that aren't overly crowded. Any ideas??

What can I do next?

Check out Destin/Fort Walton Beach, Florida. It is cheaper to stay in Fort Walton & just drive over to Destin (approx 10 miles)> Fort Walton is more family oriented and the beaches are beautiful, you will think you are in the Carribbean! We drive every July and stay 7-10days - you can get there in about 12-14hours (we've always driven through the night so the kiddos can sleep). If you want further details, send me a message back but I promise, you will enjoy this area!
Good Luck!

Disney's runnign a deal in Sept/Aug where if you book 5 nights, you get the meal plan for free. I priced it for my husband, son and I and it was about $1,900. That included flights too. You might take a look at that. I did not price it with the park hopper or water park -- just the basic admission tickets. I think that's a pretty good deal.

You could do Mexico; however, you do need a passport. It shouldn't be a big deal to get one. I beleive there was a travel advisory issued, but it may have been only for border towns.

What about doing one of the national parks?

We did South Dakota 2 years ago, and loved it. We stayed in Hill City about 30 minutes from Mt. Rushmore. If you check around there are some great cabin/motels to book. Some are cheesy. But Hill City has the best food/prices and it's not so touristy as the other city (there's really only 2 at the base of Mt. Rushmore).

Mt. Rushmore is great, Custer's State Park/Wildlife Refuge is amazing (and there is a great campground and lovely hotel inside the park), between Hill City and Rapid City is Bear Country drive thru animal park which we loved! There's a lot to do there with young kids. Crystal Caverns is close by too, and Crazy Horse Memorial, Black Hills and more.

You can drive or fly. I drove (19 hours straight...and there's nothing in Nebraska, so have a DVD player for the kids).

Then there's the Grand Canyon or Carlsbad Caverns or Denver's Rocky Mountains... Pikes Peak is beautiful. They're young, so wait get the parks in before they start ordering cruises and camps out of state (I have teens now... spoiled teens).
