Where to Try/buy Cloth Diapers?

I have read the other posts about cloth diapers, and I think I have decided to give them a try. However, I don't just want to pick a kind and buy online. I have done research as far as what types and brands others have recommended, but I would really like to see them in person first. Is there anywhere in the Seattle area that I can go to see, touch, ask questions, and maybe even test-drive some?

What can I do next?

Hi J.,

A friend recommended a Web-based store to me when I asked her about using cloth.
http://www.greenmountaindiapers.com/
She said that she had tried a few different brands with her first child and liked the quality of the diapers she bought from Green Mountain the best. They have small sampler packages of different varieties of diaper to purchase.

She ended up giving me her children's diapers and covers after they grew out of them, and I also like using them! We have prefold diapers and Bummis Super Whisper Wraps. . The Bummis are covers that can be used without pinning the prefolds underneath, but I've found that they tend to shift a little when my daughter (9 mos.) is very active. The prefolds do stay in place better when pinned. I know that my friend used Snappi fasteners as an alternative to pinning.

As an afterthought, another friend recommends Fuzzi Bunz.

Hi J. - I lived in Seattle until recently and we used cloth diapers for our son until he was about 18 months old (he still has a big belly and being up and running the diapers wouldn't stay on all that well after 18 months, even with toddler-sized diapers). We purchased our diapering supplies at a store called "Birth and Beyond" - it's located in Madison Valley (on Madison near the Arboretum). They have diapers and wraps and they also have diaper/wrap combo options too, and the staff is very helpful. I had trouble finding very many stores that sold cloth on the Seattle side, but there may be more options on the East Side. Birth and Beyond has good quality pre-fold diapers and a number of wrap options. I was very happy with what we purchased.

You won't likely be able to check some out to try, but you can buy maybe one wrap and three diapers to start, or 2-3 wrap/diaper combos. I ordered some wraps online based on user reviews but had better luck with the in-store variety. Every kid's body is different and the wraps all fit differently (and hold up to leaks differently). We ended up having to use a disposable at night, although I know some people do fine with a wool night wrap for example (ours leaked like crazy). You can probably try out the different wraps in the store over your daughter's clothes to see what fits best. My tip to prevent leaks is to also get a water-resistant wrap (some are coated on the inside with a plasticy substance and some are not). Our non-water-resistant ones always leaked (although as I said...my son wasn't delicate about his routine).

One thing to think about is whether you want to launder the diapers yourself. You have to do a pre-wash cycle on new diapers (get instructions at the store) and then there's a specific routine and limitations on the kind of detergent you can use...plus the mess of course. My husband washed them and we had a front-load machine which got them really clean, but I know some people don't have the time or energy (or stomach) to do it themselves. If you don't want to wash them, I'd suggest that you sign up for a service and try it out that way. Just find one that you can cancel any time. There are a number of eco-friendly diaper services in the Seattle area.

I decided to use Seattle Diaper Service to give it a try. But before I decided to go with a service, I looked into buying diapers. I found this website where they have a trial sampler pack for $10. I never used it but it seems like a great idea. Take a look:

http://www.jilliansdrawers.com/cdcm.html

If nothing else, you get 3 weeks of diapers for $10.

I also went to Birth and Beyond (mentioned in another response) and found them very helpful and informative about all sorts of products including cloth diapers, slings and nursing bras.

Hope that helps and good luck!

I understand exactly what you mean! The diapers are expensive and just jumping in without knowing what is right for YOU can be a mistake! I found that there are a couple of women in seattle who run webstores out of their home. Unfortuanatly I can only give you the name of one. www.babysbottomline.com. She has several different types of diapers and would set up an appointment so that you could look at them all first. Happy Heiny's are my favorite!! We bought one of three different types before we bought the bulk and actually ended up buying about half and half of two types. We chose the one size diapers and so far they are awesome - it was so nice to just undo a snap when he grew a size instead of buying all new diaper covers!!
Best of luck
L.
