Which Doctor?

I'm 19 weeks pregnant and I'm having excrutiating low back pain, right where the sciatic nerve comes out. It's horrible. Anyway... who would you call? The OB or an orthopedist? Or family physician? My regular physician will probably just refer me to one or the other anyway. I considered going to a chiropractor but my insurance doesn't cover chiropractic care.

What do you think?

What can I do next?

Chiropractor rates are usually very reasonable. I don't think I would've made it through pregnancy as well as I did without the chiropractor I saw regularly. Call around and see what it would cost.

When you are preggo, your insurance will want pretty much everything routed through your OB. In fact, you may be able to get chiro care during pregnancy if your OB refers it. So I would say OB :)
And I feel you on the sciatic pain, that was always my only down side in the second trimester!

I'd still vote chiro. You may want to check, my chiro copay is 35.....with out insurance they charge 40. And if your pregnant, they won't do xrays.

My insurance has never covered chiropractors either but that never stopped me. It is worth the money for the pain to go away.

My rule is always go to the OB while pregnant. I'm amazed at the number of things that are pregnancy related that I would never have thought of. Your OB will be able to talk to you and decide whether or not it's related and what, if anything, to do about it, but it's a safe and smart place to start.

Find out what the cost is for Chiropractic. Mine is only $30/visit w/o insurance. Tylenol helps too. And of course be sure to talk to your OB for continuity of car.

Some insurance covers chiropractic care...have you checked yours recently? Usually if it doesn't, a good chiropractor will lower the fees (a sign of something wrong with health care for sure!) but ASK!
Ours is 20-25 per visit. I'd go that route.
Good luck!

All I could think of when I read this title was "I told the Witch Doctor..." song, LOL!
I would call the OB and see if they will refer you to someone to help with the pain, to make sure it is all covered by your ins.

Your OB could refer you to a chiropractor who also does PT? That should be covered, and the chiropractor/PT would use his full body of knowledge to treat you.

I think that the orthopedist is your best bet, though I'd find a chiro who is good with pregnant women and pay for it, if you can afford it.

I hope you get some relief - I remember putting on my pantyhose about killed me...
