I never thought there would be so many varieties of potties to choose from. Please let me know which type potty you used, the pros & cons, and if you would recommend it.

What can I do next?

First I bought a Safety 1st brand. It was a step stool when closed and had a soft potty seat that was for boys or girls depending on which way it was flipped. I think my son used it for maybe a week. Even he was grossed out by having to empty it!! And once we got serious about potty training, he wanted to sit on the big potty like Mommy and Daddy and refused his little potty. So off we went to buy an insert for the toilet seat. That one worked out fabulously. Fortunately, I didn't feel like the first purchase was a total waste because we used the step stool portion to get to the potty seat. I noticed the other day that they still sell this same potty chair, except now the seat can come off and attach to the big potty seat...if I had to do it all over again, this is what I would have bought. Good luck!

Comfy Cushy 3-in-1 Potty by Safety First – Highly recommend
http://www.safety1st.com/product/detail.asp?ID=2634

+ Inexpensive
We bought ours for less than $15 at Wal-Mart.

+ Transitional
When we first began training, we left the potty in the living room during the day. The toilet ring fits on the little potty or a full-sized toilet. We still use it as a step stool.

+ Portable
We used to put the potty in the trunk for emergency potty stops. We lined it with Sassy disposable diaper sacks and tossed a full sack in the first available trash can. We still bring it with us when we go camping or on a long car trips.

- A little messy to clean. We poured contents in toilet, rinsed, poured rinse water in toilet, used a Clorox wipe, and let air-dry

Plastic folding potty seat – Recommended for public bathrooms or 2nd potty

+ Easy to clean
Wiped with Clorox wipe, let air-dry

+ Portable
I put it in a tiny little backpack with wipes and a pair of extra pants.

- It pinched my daughter's bottom, and sometimes slipped, if it was not positioned properly.

We bought one that was recommended by many. How many times was it used. . . .0 We do use it as a step though every day. If you teach them on the regular toilet, you won't have a mess to clean, and you won't have to "re-train" later when you're ready to move to the big toilet. JMO We didn't plan it that way, but it worked. Our son would only go in the big potty like us, so we definitely lucked out.

My son's just about 2, not quite ready yet, but interested. We have a potty, but I also got the inserts cause that seemed to make more sense to me. He's very big on doing things like adults so now he wants to sit on the seat and "practice" (with all his clothes on LOL). He watches the water and TP go down when we flush.

Thanks, ladies, for the idea of using the "unused" potty as a step stool. He's big, but not quite big enough to get on by himself. :)

Just get the seat that fits on the regular toilet-about $10.00. That way, you don't have to teach them again later, and you don't have to deal with the mess.

I would take your child to the store and let them pick their own. I also recommend the potty seats that fit on the toilet in addition to the little potties. You will need both. The Potty Book is also a great resource. :)

I got my son the toilet insert. He also has a potty chair from Ikea (it was only $4), but he rarely goes on that, but loves to sit on it. He prefers to go on the big toilet, which is fine with me b/c I don't have to empty/clean the potty chair every time he goes. I also got a potty seat from Babies R Us that folds up and fits in the diaper bag for when you're in public, or even just visiting family. Good luck!
