I am a shoe-a-holic. I own around 60-70 pairs. And not one pair is white. I'm also 30 years old if means anything. :) I would go with a metallic if it matches the dress.
Hi Moms,
Calling all stylish moms! It has been a few years since I've felt confident in my knowledge of "what is in style". My dear friend's step daughter is getting married next weekend. I bought a new dress and some white, strappy shoes with a wedge heel. I am feeling unsure about the color of the shoes. Are people wearing white shoes again? Are they still kind of geeky looking or acceptable now-a-days? What is your gut reaction?
Thanks!
Thank you so much for your responses! You were so helpful! I think, perhaps, it comes down to my comfort level of wearing white shoes, whether or not I felt like I could "rock them" or not. Well...I think posting this question to y'all is indicative of my insecurities! I showed my outfit to my husband after I posted this question online and he said, "Um...I don't think you should wear those..." (Perhaps I should have started with him! LOL) He is always very affirming and complimentary so his response was particularly insightful. In the honest truth, I don't think it is because the SHOES are white but because my LEGS are so white! LOL And they just don't look very flattering together. So, I guess I'm off to go shopping... :-)
Thanks again! K.

If the shoes look great with the dress then go with it :) White is now a year round color to wear so rock them! If you put them on and think they are not dressy enough then maybe put on a different pair. I would wear them, if I am wearing dressy clothes and someone is judging what I am wearing then it is the their issue because the focus should be on the bride and groom not on what others are wearing :)
White strappy shoes would be okay depending on the dress. When I am feeling unsure about the color I go with a silver, or gold strappy shoe because those can be worn with anything. They have great strappy shoes in these two metallic colors at Rack Room Shoes or DSW. I am sure you will look just beautiful in whatever you are wearing...and most importantly have fun!!!
I think the wearing white restrictions are over. Wear them and have a good time!
yes- people are wearing white shoes again.
I Think the rule USED to be wearing white shoes/pants was ok after easter and ends at Labor day. But that rule was back when I was in high school. When I watch the style network it seems like they are wearing white year round. I say if it looks good and you feel pretty go for it!
White shoes are never out of style, although the style of the shoe can be so.
Never wear white shoes with hose/socks any darker than your personal "tan"' color. That's when you look like a nerd, regardless of them being the latest fashion.
Have fun at the wedding.
Is it a causal wedding? My thinking is that color makes me think more casual. Is the wedge white too? My gut reaction is not sure I'd be a fan but what do I know lol!?
What kind of dress are you wearing? What time of day is the wedding? If it's in the evening then I'd skip wearing white unless it's a more casual affair.
White shoes, especially strappy ones, are going to be fashionable! I have been searching on my own for some! Go for it! :)
It has been almost 6 years since I have worn a dress...it is easier to chase little ones in pants (and I have a nice selection of pants suits to choose from for church or dressy occasions). Any way when I was wearing alot of dresses and skirts, I bought and wore L'EGGS toeless hose. They came in a nude color, which was perfect for me, since I am very fair skinned, too.
Add some complimnetary polish to your toes to finish out the look:) It is amazing what a little polish to the toes do to jazz up some shoes.
Have a great time!
I see that you have already made a decision but here is some additional advice:
1. TRUE White or white/white (with no other colors) shoes MAY be worn after Easter and before Labor Day - regardless of what is in the stores or what "everyone else is doing" this is still a fashion rule - especially in the South.
2. I once had a stylist tell me that NO woman should EVER wear completely white shoes because they make your feet look HUGE regardless of the size of your feet.
3. Go for comfort - your personal comfort in the shoes AND your own sense of style of what is comfortable! Nothing is more stylish and impressive than self confidence... so, if you are not confident in the shoes you originally picked that means you would not be confident the whole special day!
4. I see that someone suggested beige or nude shoes which is a great idea - if your new dress is amazing then why take away from it by a pair of shoes? "Show off shoes" should be worn with a plain outfit to make it POP.
5. I have never tried it but a friend SWEARS by "spray on pantyhose" so that she can wear strappy shoes and not worry about her WHITE legs blinding everyone.
Good luck finding something fabulous that goes with your dress and have a fun time at the wedding.
blessings,
stacy
White shoes NEVER go out of style........and they go with anything. Besides, it's a wedding. Wear them and have a great time. Congrats to your friends step daughter, I hope they have a wonderful life together.
My thought is always that if they are trendy looking and they are new, then more than likely the shoe people know what they are doing. I say go with it. Plus if they are comfy, can't beat that.
I read that you are returning the shoes. Nude colored strappy shoes are always a great alternative to white. They draw attention away from the foot and to the dress instead. Lastly, I am very pale. If you are doing something special, you could consider trying out those gradual self tanners. I've used the Jergen's brand and Neutrogena Build-a-Tan. They work great. Since they are gradual, I usually use one application and then skip a day or two. Just a tad bit of color works for me. The Neutrogena is a little darker than the Jergen's Medium.
Hi K., I think white shoes are perfectly acceptable. Stores don't just put things on the shelf at random, they have fashion stylists who call these things long in advance. That is why you notice summer wear right after Christmas.
I am not sure of the size town you live in, but I do notice a difference between Las Vegas and Santa Fe. Las Vegas anything goes and we just say, "It's Vegas". In Santa Fe, you have to be careful of the Summer whites and no white shoes after Fall thing. Maybe that is where your apprehension is stemming from.
I say wear the shoes, unless you are really that uncomfortable. Perhaps white is just what belongs with that dress. Your shoes should match your hemline.
I don't do much of what the fashion police say. I wear what I like and what is flattering and comfortable.
Today, I wore a bright turquoise blouse, white crops and white sandals to church. No regrets.
