Whooping Cough Recovery in Adults

Tested positive for whooping cough in mid December (well, actually, anything greater than 15 was a positive and my labs came back at 14.45...Borderline, but close enough given all my symptoms). It has now been two months. Recovery is awfully slow. During the worst of it, I used a vaporiser and stayed home from work for a month. I try very hard not to do Google searches, but I did read they refer to it as "the 100 day cough" in China, and that the recovery can be very slow, and uneven. About a month ago, I had almost stopped coughing and felt really lucky. Now, I am coughing again, and it is very annoying. I know I am supposed to stay away from dairy and sugar, which I haven't been good about (36 weeks pregnant here and hungry!)...I did just see the doctor and my lungs are clear...anyone have experience with this? What helped you, if anything other than time? Thanks.

What can I do next?

I tore cartilage between my ribs coughing because of the flu. I can't imagine the damage I would do with whooping cough. I'm glad you haven't done that. It is just awful.

That being said, I wonder if you could ask the doctor now for a cough suppressant that is safe for pregnancy so that you can quiet the cough enough to sleep. My doctor told me that my cough wasn't productive and it was okay to quiet it. The trick is to get a medicine that is safe in your last trimester.

So sorry you're going through this. Shame on the person who didn't get vaccinated and gave you their germs!!

So sorry to read this...and while pregnant? Awful! My mom had whooping cough in late October several years ago (I remember because she was diagnosed right after my wedding and I was afraid that she infected my guests). She cracked several ribs due to coughing. I remember by Christmas she was able to host but definitely wasn't feeling 100%. It was probably another couple of months after that (maybe 4 total) before she felt fully recovered.

I didn't have whooping cough (they tested me) but I had a cough that wouldn't quit for 2 months.
For me, I felt better if I slept with a heating pad on low on my throat/chest.

Sorry you have been so sick, it really stinks.

Rest, rest and more rest. You can take some extra vitamin C (or Airborne, but check with the doctor on this since you're pregnant) to help give you a little extra energy. Try your best to avoid the sugar and dairy, those are the two worst things to have with any cold or virus, sugar lowers the immune system and dairy creates a lot of mucus. When you can get some fresh air, even if its cold out.
