Why Am I Dizzy After Eating?

The last 2 days, about 45 min. after I eat, I get very bad motion sickness - even from just walking. I get extremely dizzy and nauseous. My doc said probably just because I'm pregnant, but, although every pregnancy is different, this is my 9th child, and I've never experienced this before. I cannot continue to live like this. I feel like I'm stuck on my couch for fear of being sick again. Please help. Blood sugar and thyroid tests have been normal. My blood pressure has been generally around 102/67, but, I'm dizzy even when sitting, so I don't think that's the issue. Thank you for reading this.

What can I do next?

Sounds like vertigo. Try cutting back on foods that are salty, high in caffine and greasy. Maybe call an ENT and try to get in with them. You could have an ear infection and not even know it.
Are there certain foods or movements that bring on the dizziness? Try to narrow it down and avoid them if possible.

Hi G.,
I had the exact same thing happen to me when I was pregnant. Very odd, I would eat and then it would be like all my blood just went from my head to my stomach and I would have to sit down. I found I had to eat often and just really tiny meals. It subsided though as the pregnancy progressed. Also I never had those symptoms with my first pregnancy, only my second. So try not to worry, just a new joy of pregnancy to deal with. Good luck and best wishes.

WOWzers! God bless you for having 9 children. Did your doctor say anything about Vertigo?

Vertigo is the feeling that you or your environment is moving or spinning. It differs from dizziness in that vertigo describes an illusion of movement. When you feel as if you yourself are moving, it's called subjective vertigo, and the perception that your surroundings are moving is called objective vertigo.

I was like this and thought I was pregnant. I went to the doctor and all tests were negative for pregnancy. Doc checked my ears they were fine. Doc gave me a script for Antivert which is safe to take during pregnancy. There is also another one phenagran, but do not take this if you have any type of heart condition at all. It will mess with how your heart beats. I can't take phenagran. But I can take antivert. So best of luck. My dizziness stopped after about two weeks.

If you are not eating enough iron that can cause it too. I know this sounds crazy but I started to eat red meat (beef or steak) and my dizziness started to go away. Best of Luck to you.

I to have no medical advice but I (have 5) so aside from the dizzy spells (which are obviously disturbing) I think you deserve to sit on the couch. I get dizzy spells when I don't eat? May you get deliverance from these dizzy spells and have a wonderful pregnancy and delivery.

I had the same problem! My doctor said it was motion sickness at its finest and prescribed Zofran. It really helped settle my stomach and my body. Its safe for you and for the baby.

Good Luck!

First I want to say Congradualtions I love big families. I am tring for our 5th and hope this time I can keep it. God has sent us alot of blessings but taken some and shared some. Any how, I agree witht he dr. The baby is probably seated in a section that could be maybe making your body off. Like you equalibrian is off. Maybe your too active, like your running around trying to get everyone feed and than you and maybe your body is saying something needs to change. Or maybe this is just what it is and your need to slow down. I don't know how you eat this is an assumtion so please don't be affended but maybe instead of shoving food in maybe eat slower. don't walk around alot. Another thing cuz this is all guess'e maybe you need more iron. Something to consider. Those are my thoughts. Good luck and congradulations. I am really interested about the big family thing. If your ok with it can we talk off here I have some ? maybe we could compair stuff? If so contact me. Thanks. God bless the family how awesome.

Oh my gosh, yes that makes you miserable! I'm pregnant with my fourth and have experienced the same thing, but hadn't with the others. My blood sugar and all that came back fine as well (I thought it was gestational diabetes or something). My Dr. said to make sure and eat protein, and I've noticed that makes a huge difference! Try eating eggs and whole wheat toast in the morning. I even found bread in the store with 17g protein in two slices! I've also been buying protein bars to help throughout the day. They're a little expensive, but well worth it and actually curbs my "chocolate" cravings.

Even though we don't have the gestational diabetes, those foods with sugars and carbs are effecting us. I'm due in Oct and will so glad when I can eat a bowl of cereal and not feel like that. LOL. Speaking of cereal, the dr said even the "healthy" kinds will do that to you.

I would suggest having them look at your ears for fluid. If there isn't any there, that's ok. I would ask if you can take Dramamine at all. It sounds like you might have vertigo. That's where you get dizzy. I had it so bad i couldn't even move for about 4 days without being dizzy. It was HORRIBLE. so I know how you are feeling. What the doc's suggested to me, was that there are tiny rock crystals in your inner ear. If they get thrown off for any reason, it does mess with your balance, since balance is in the inner ear, so that makes you dizzy. One way to help is to lay on the floor on your stomach. Then slowly roll one way onto your back. Roll back onto your stomach the same way you just rolled. Then roll the other way and then back to your stomach. Roll each way about 5 times, and do that 2-3 times a day. It does help. I did it, and noticed a huge improvement in the dizziness. I know do that every time the dizziness starts up.

Hope this helps

Hugs and prayers to you, G.!

Yes, every pregnancy is different and we also do this differently as we (yikes!) get older. And, though you may not have felt like this during other pregnancies, I was basically feeling at least a little "green" the entire time that I was pregnant with both of my children. I was 33 when I was pregnant with my first.

I did a Google search and typed in "pregnancy" and a bunch of things appeared in the drop-down box. The first one was "pregnancy dizzy after eating." Many sites came up with helpful suggestions. Small meals. Drink lots to avoid dehydration. Slow down and take it easy.

Lastly, have you heard of Mom of Pre-Schoolers? (MOPS) I only have two children, but I would not be where I am today without the love and support of loving husband and my MOPS group. They are a Christian-based group of moms that exist to support other moms. If you haven't, it is definitely worth looking them up at www.mops.org

I do hope that you can take it easy and feel better!

I experienced the same thing when I was pregnant and my doctor told me that it was because my blood was rushing to the stomach to aid in the digestion process. And since you are still early in your pregnancy, I think a lot of your blood is being diverted to the baby at this point, so there isn't a whole lot left for you with all of this going on. Hope you feel better soon. I know it is a horrible feeling.

A couple of things could be causing your dizziness. Your blood pressure is a lttle low and for sure could cause dizziness after eating. When you eat, your system is doing everything it can to digest what you just ate. I have low pressure and like you was a little woozy even while sitting. I started taking some Vitamin D and Vitamin B. I was also a little dehydrated. More water was very helpful. Between the D, B and the water I do not have any more wooziness.

I had a cousin who went through the same thing. She had to eat VERY slow and had to eat VERY small meals at a time. Basically she would eat ALL day. However, she didn't feel sick all the time and wasn't having dizzy spells. I remember that Christmas in particular. Everyone was done eating and she was still sitting at the table eating one greenbean every 30 seconds. Sounds like a pain but it worked!

Good Luck!

Hi G.,

Recently, my mother had similar symptoms and was rushed in an ambulance to the ER. They never really found out the cause of her headaches, extreme dizziness, diarhea, and heart palpitations, but she was eventually diagnosed with vertigo. Perhaps, you should ask your doctor to run tests to check you for it.

Best,
R.

G.,

I'm not a medical person, but it sounds like some of this could be related to an inner ear problem. That's what motion sickness or anything related to balance (like walking) is often linked to.

Good luck and God bless.
