Why is it that the schools celebrate Martin Luther King's bday but not Abe Lincoln's or George Washington's bday? Or is this why presidents day is in Feb? Not racist or anything just wondering because a child asked me.
I don't know why we don't celebrate Roosevelt's bday. He was the president who led us out of the Great Depression and WW2.

NYC public schools are closed for an entire week in February for President's week or what some call Winter Break. A few of the president's birthday's fall during that week.
There are lot's of influential people whose birthdays do not get celebrated.
Martin Luther King Jr.'s impact on our country was tremendous though and I can see why we celebrate it.
When I was a youngster, hehe, we celebrated both Washington and Lincoln's birthdays in Feb, one week apart from each other. One day, they decided to combine them into President's day and add MLK day to the mix.
Yes, Abe and George fall under presidents day. Otherwise, we'd be having an awful lot of holidays, for all the presidents!!
It's technically not for all presidents, but we always celebrated all the presidents in school. I think it would be too complicated, to start adding other days for influential people.
Because they are celebrated on President's Day.
In IL we celebrate Abraham Lincoln's birthday on it's own (but he is from here) in addition to President's Day (which is the offical celebration of ONLY George Washington, but many states unofficially lump GW & AL together) and Martin Luther King Jr's Birthday.
We also celebrate Pulaski Day in honor of Polish General Kashmir Pulaski.
We like to celebrate people who were influential in America, I guess.
GW and AL is celebrated on Presidents Day.
They are celebrated - it's called President's Day!!!!!!!!!!!! For those of us who remember, we used to get Lincoln's and Washington's birthday off - both in February. They just consolidated them into one day - it was too many days off.
Since you mentioned Roosevelt (yet another president), why don't you do something special on President's Day? Everyone in the family could make a little presentation about their favorite president and tell about him, or do a little research during the year to know what presidents you want to celebrate and do one president a year on President's Day.
That's what President's Day is -a celebration of Washington and Lincoln's birthdays that fall closely together in February.
I believe that since there were several birthdays close together, they just created one day which is feb.
well we do have president's day weekend. which celebrates abe just not directly.
i think it was a long time coming to have a black american holiday. he needed to be honored in some way. he was a pacifist and just trying to bring equality for everyone. many jewish people walked with the black hand in hand. i believe its a message that should not be forgotten. so that is my opinion on your question.
Presidents Day is for Lincoln & Washington's birthdays combined as they both fall in February.
Interesting question... we lump all of our Presidents into one day which I think is more about acknowledging their commitment and service than a birthday. Just my opinion, but I think we celebrate MLK day more to acknowledge the impact of the Civil Rights Movement, of which he was the undeniable "main character" associated with peaceful equality.
Interestingly, there was a period of time in VA when the day in January was celebrated as Lee/Jackson/King day- Robert E. Lee, Andrew Jackson and MLK. That didn't last long and the celebration days were separated, but I too wonder why we celebrate MLK Day and don't acknowledge other Americans with the same reverence, especially those who achieved significant milestones with respect to Civil Rights.
We don't celebrate Marie Ruoff Byrum- the first woman to cast her vote under the 19th Ammendment, but that was monumental too!
President's Day is in February because Washington and Lincoln's birthday both appear in February. So, yes, they are all celebrated. Plus, president's day is a catch all to celebrate all of them. We have had so many American heroes that we really can't celebrate all of them and have the day off school/work.
Do we really celebrate it or is it just another reason for kids to have the day off? We never had this day off when I was in school.
