Winter Coats - Cherryville,MO

What store do you have the most luck in finding winter coats for the kiddos? I have done old navy, target, wal mart, the children's place. I don't really notice a difference in the quality of warmth of any of them. What is your favorite? It does get pretty cold here, so perhaps spending money on Columbia or another better quality brand would be worth it. Although, the target coats are even pricey themselves (about $35 or $40 if I recall) so it may not be much of a price difference!

So What Happened?

ETA: Not at all opposed to thrift shops. I have purchased items there in the past. I also do ebay. I get great deals there. I just do not have the time to run to multiple stores, so I was trying to get away with an online purchase! =) Suprisingly, we have very poor selection here at our thrift stores. We don't have many and the items in there are really rough a lot of times. I have better luck in neighboring towns, but again, the time issue.

Since we're in TX, we don't really have to do coats. We can get by with warm jackets or even a heavy sweater or layers. BUT, someone did give my daughter a really nice coat that they had bought at Kohls.

I used to wear Target or whatever kind of coats and WOW, what a warm difference in the pricier brands.

I like the down puffer jackets from Gap Kids. Every once in a while I come across a 40% or 50% off coupon. The jacket still ends up costing somewhere between $30 and $40, but my kids can usually wear them for two years. I prefer down filling because it is easier to buckle them into their car seats when their jackets aren't so puffy.

Lands End jackets are great too if you can get them on super clearance. Good luck to you!

You may not like this idea, but the first place I looked for my children's jackets when they were little was the thrift store. Yes, you have to go through some dirt to find the gold, and you may have to go more than once, but it can be worth your time. There were winter coats there that were just the right size, just the right style (evidently some kid either grew past it or said, "Mom, I don't like it!"), and with little or no repairs to make. No, they weren't new; they looked just the way everybody else's did after everybody else had worn theirs a half-dozen times. I was paying under $20 for coats that usually cost four or five times as much.

(In fact, one year my two girls got their winter jackets from their dance teacher! Those perfectly good, fashionable, expensive jackets had been in the dance school's lost and found for months and no one had claimed them, so my daughters really hit the jackpot.)

We get cold weather here, so I looked for good quality and no damage if there was insulation in the coat. For wool coats I looked for 100% wool rather than a wool-polyester blend - again, they're warmer.

Costco. Right now they have all their coats out and they are really quite nice and warm and nice-looking. I purchased one for my daughter last week and it was only $23.00 and very cute!

I've bought my oldest son a Land's End coat twice and both coats lasted two winters. The first coat I found online in the sale section for $30 or something. The second one I bought when they had 30% off. Worth every penny! I've had his Lands End snow pants since I bought his first coat too so this is going on winter #4 and I'm pretty sure they'll still fit. LL Bean is great too.

Burlington coat factory has decent priced coats
They have a site as well. I normally get snow coats and pants from target they normally last 2 yrs and then a warm winter coat that is thinner than a snow coat from on. I normally get my daughter the ones that have fur lining to wear out since its warm and not super thick so she can safely wear her coat in the car. I spend 30 or so on those coats and get one year out of them the snow pants anr coats I spend 75 on both and get two years

I get my online on Land End; at around this time of year they get to be 30 or 40% off and if your don't like it when it arrives, you can return it to any Sears store for the full paid amount with no problems. You can find really warm Down coats and parkas.
Good luck to you!!!

I have bought at different places through the years, but Kohl's always seems to have good deals and warm coats.

My kids always had recess and they went outside everyday unless it was less than 20 degrees or so, so they needed a good, warm coat.

I usually wait to buy until I get a 20 or 30 percent off coupon they send out. My kids are teens now, but I have always bought their coats a little big so they could usually use them for 2 winters.

DS is only 3, and an october baby. The first coat I got him was largely a waste, he spent most of his time in those snuggies either in the car seat cocoon, or in the stroller cocoon. Since then it has been OLD NAVY puffy coats that I get end of season.

While we are fortunate not to be wanting for money, I grew up frugal, and still lean that way. So its end of season sales + coupons, and the coat runs about $12.50, if that.

Best to you and yours,
F. B.

I hardly every buy clothes new for my boys. Local swap-shop groups of Facebook, church friends, coworkers, etc. Someone always has nice, gently worn clothes that their kids have outgrown.

It's not worth it to me to spend $40 on a jacket when I can spend $5-10.

Burlington Coat Factory; Zulily has great prices on coats, I saw some for $40 that retailed for over $100 a few weeks back. I also got an Ergo baby carrier on there for $54, retail $145. It came in three days. Zulily doesn't hold the sales forever, but they do have lots of deals.

I always do well at JCPenny. There's a brand called Xexposure. Their price is about $30 but if buy at the end of the season in perpetration for the coming season there on clearance and about $20. I like them because they are similar to adult snow coats 3-in-1. Fleece jacket, waterproof jacket and then together is a snow/winter coat.

When my kids were little I always did LLbean or Lands end because those coats are actually made to be worn outside for longer periods of time during the winter. Sometimes I was lucky enough to find then at the consignment shop but if I didn't then I'd spring for them new. I also sprung for LLbean duck boots (and was grateful when the thinsulation boots came on the market for less $$$) because cold feet while playing outside sucks.

Hi S., love your name by the way!,

I don't know how old your kiddies are but mine is 12. We bought him a convertible coat from LL Bean last year and it is FANTASTIC.

It was a little on the pricey side but he'll get at least 3 years out of it and it is so versatile it works from september to may, we live in michigan and as they say, if you don't like the weather in michigan wait 5 minutes and it will change.

He loves it, I love it, it is also completely machine washable. I believe they have kids sizes. I bought him a men's small. he swam in it a little last year but i know he'll get tons of use out of it. :-) S.

We live in MN so we don't skimp when it comes to winter wear! Try Land's End, Eddie Bauer or our favorite which is REI. We spend a lot of time outside so it's important to me that my kids stay warm. And some good long underwear is important too!

do you really think it gets cold here in mid-MO?

I think we're pretty lucky to have just a few days of sub-zero temps!

I have found that the arctic-lined Carhartts work well, as do the multi-layer/multi-use coats from Kohls, Penneys, etc. When my sons were little, we liked being able to convert to "with" or "without" the zipout linings!

My daughter has worn Old Navy, the Gap and Hanna Andersson. By far, Hanna held up the best and never held a stain. After a rough year of snow and salt all over the place, the jacket looked great and was easy to wash.

The Gap jacket held a few stains and the Old Navy was terrific. This year, I just don't want to spend $70 on a Hanna so I got a cute puffer coat at ON.

If you plan to hand down, then go with a Hanna - you can't beat them.

I like 3 in 1 coats for our fluxuating weather. DH got DD an Osh Kosh coat this year, but I'm not sure it's any better than the Circo ones at Target. I also got DD bib snow pants at the thrift store recently and she already had boots. That wooly bear caterpillar better be right!

IMO, the 3 in 1s are 3 coats for 1 price and I like being able to put on one layer TO the car and then quickly layer up the second part if needed out of the car (no too poofy for the seatbelt). I can use a 3 in 1 coat from Fall through Spring and sometimes the following year again.

Try the Cabelas web site. I have a Columbia coat I got several years ago at a good price. We haven't gotten kids' coats there, but we got them really nice raincoats at least 2 years ago that are still in excellent condition.

I live in one of the coldest cities in Canada (between -20 an -40 for much of the winter), and the Old Navy parkas are warm enough for my boys, who walk to and from school and spend a lot of time outdoors. I bought Columbia this year because I got a really great deal, but I can normally get the Old Navy jackets for about $20 on sale. I also buy at the thrift shop, and the used one is the "spare" for when I'm washing the other ones. I do buy North Face for myself, and it is warm, but I don't need a new jacket every year or every second year like the kids do.

I've had good luck at lands end. Yes they are pricy, but I got them 1 size up and they ended up lasting them 3 years. They would still be wearing them this winter if they still fit. The quality is great!
This year though I did end up going with costco. They had down jackets for $40

JcPenney's is great, I usually find something there. Also, Burlington Coat Factory is where I found my son's coat last year. Of course it's always easier to get from thrift shops if you can find stuff, and for a good deal etc but that's not always possible. I don't mind spending $30 or $40 for a coat for my kiddo. It's COLD and even if he used it for the year, that's not that much to keep him warm. He's worth it. I bought his last year in the next size up, and it's still good to go for this year.

I am not sure about your area, but here our local Army Navy store does a tent sale every year and we always make sure to be first in line. There we can get our kids high quality down coats and snow pants, as well as really good boots that actually last all winter (like sorrel or Baffin) all for a small fraction of the regular price. This may not help for this year (at least our sale has already come and gone) but I would find out about whether your store does one for next year.
