Wisdom Tooth

My bottom ones were impacted and totally sideways. I finally had them removed after putting up with pain. I guess I was just afraid. I stayed awake and did it with Novocaine and laughing gas. It took about 45 minutes to do them and was not as bad as I thought it would be. I was numb for a while and had to clean and gargle for a couple of weeks. I didn't even take anything more than ibuprofen for the pain. Most of the pain was my other teeth shifting since there was more room in my mouth. By a month it was like nothing happened.

I have had all 4 removed. Got each one done individually as the particular tooth became a problem. I can say that getting them removed is far less painful than dealing with ongoing pain of an impacted or infected tooth. I would get it removed as soon as possible. Thats the only way to stop the pain for good. They can put you to sleep for the surgery, and they will give you pain meds for after the surgery. Its really not that bad.

Have you seen an oral surgeon for a consultation? If your tooth is impacted, that means it's coming in at an angle and blocked from coming in normally. This equals a lot of unnecessary pain and can lead to a lot of problems. I had all four of my wisdom teeth out simultaneously as a teen because they were all impacted. 3 of the sites healed within a week with no problems. I had pain meds for the first few days after surgery and then was fine after that. I got dry socket in one site, which is an infection. It was easily resolved with antibiotics, and that healed up in a few extra days after the others. No big whoop.

I had 4 impacted wisdom teeth removed a year ago. The pain is do-able if you take the pain meds. I had to take 800mg ibprofen and the narcotic or whatever it was for the first 5 days. The worst part for me was the packing they put in tasted horrible and all four teeth left four huge holes especially in the bottom. I had to flush the food out with warm water and a syringe and it was painful. The holes took months to go away. I suggest not eating solid food at all. Every time I ate something solid I was left with a painful consequence and food stuck in there. I'm sorry for being so honest and blunt but I am also so glad I got it taken care of and it is over and done with. good luck to you.

I had all 4 removed at once (as an adult). Two were impacted.
It was about 4-5 days before I was eating solid foods.
My BFF, on the other hand, came home, took a nap & got up and ate a hamburger for dinner.
It's different for different people.
It's my understanding that "impacted" means it's NOT going to come in on it's own--because it is blocked by tissue or bone...so why he would think it's going to come in is beyond me.
I'd go ahead & get them removed.

Had four out at the same time and recovery was uneventful. Pain not bad
at all.

I had a bottom one removed last week and it was impacted and infected, little did I know. Recovery hasn't been bad but the first day after I arrived home and all the meds wore off from novacaine or what-have-you I was writhing in pain til my pain meds kicked in. I had a top one removed without incident last year. I have to have my other two non erupted wisdom teeth removed surgically due to the fact that they are causing issues beneath the gums.

I highly recommend taking it easy on your mouth, following the advice of your dentist, drinking lots of healthy things the first day or two and eating soft foods if you're able. Be mindful of making sure to rinse your mouth out after you eat even with just plain water or whatever your dentists recommends. It will take time to heal completely, weeks to months as far as my dentist told me. I have no advice on how to get teeth to come through, sorry.

I would think if the tooth is impacted it should be taken out now and not let to get infected maybe. I had an impacted abscessed one some years back...well MANY years back and it hurt the worst of the four. I had the other one out separately and then the two top out together. I was, am, a baby with teeth so thought I was dying but probably would do better now that I'm older. It is better than the pain of leaving it in.

go see a oral surgan. I had 2 that came in and 1 impacted the impacted was side ways and man was it a pain to get out, I was out cold of course but I do remember the dentist cursing under his breath trying to get that bugger out.

my 15yo just had his removed last Friday. All 4 were "partial bony impactions", with the 2 lower ones coming in horizontally. Hurt like heck as those erupting teeth pushed on the existing molars! + if not removed quickly, $5000+ in orthodontics would have been down the drain!

Last summer, the teeth weren't showing much on the xrays. 9 months later, we were near "critical" on those lowers. We had hoped to wait until summer vacation, but it was impossible due to the pain level. School lets out next week....& he has 3 concerts & 2 track meets in that timeframe. The Band Director has excused him....thank goodness! No way to blow brass while still swollen!

As for recovery, he was pretty miserable thru the wkend. Lived on soft foods only. He missed school on Monday due to excessive facial swelling, but was fine by Tues. Still swollen inside, & takes a 800mg ibuprofen afterschool. Did not take any of the pain meds, though. :)

Our instructions were to ice pack the 1st 24 hours, then switch to heat packs at the 48 hour mark. Tomorrow is 1 week & he's very thankful it's all over! Good Luck....
