Wisdom Tooth Extraction - Sorry I Know Not Mom Related

I had my wisdom tooth extracted on Monday. I had a few stitches put in to close the site and I've been doing all the dentist instructed me to do. However, I am so bored with basically drinking and eating super soft foods. I am currently eating string cheese - yes I can chew opposite side of extraction however my husband just had his done prior to myself and got dry socket. I am terrified of that happening so I'm being a wimp and playing it safe. What have you done who have been there done that? What's funny is I had a top one removed a few years back and was fine in a few days, this time around it's a bottom and the pain and differences associated are night and day different. Thanks for any advice on anything else I can add to my diet. It's cinco de mayo tomorrow and yes we celebrate but I don't want to just be stuck with eating beans and flan! :(

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well tonight I managed to actually have a bowl of mini-noodles with homemade alfredo sauce sans black pepper. It was not hard to eat at all and of course I always rinse my mouth out after eating. I can feel the blood clot that has formed and of course the stitches as well and while yeah I'm a bit sore I've got my antibiotics that I've been taking and percocet to help out if things get worse.

I don't know if this is one of those things that is easier if done younger or not.
I had all 4 out when I was 16 and I was eating pizza 3 days later.
I never had any problems.
My husband had his out in his mid 20's and he took about a week to heal up.
He didn't have any problems but he took longer to heal up than I did.

Its been 5 days you should be fine eating what ever you want... just try to keep it at the oppisite side of where it was pulled.

I had all of my upper teeth pulled 6 years ago and couldn't wear my denture for 2 two weeks due to the swelling and that night they had me eating soft foods. They said on the 3rd day to eat red meat ( perferably a med rare steak) to get the protien back in me that I lost from the bleeding. I did.. it was hard and hurt but I did it! I never ( thankfully) got a dry socket.

So I would think you should be ok. There should be enough of a blood clot and healed enough to where you shouldn't get a dry socket just make sure you swish very good after eating anything. A gentle swishing but strong enough to clean it with out knocking the clot out.

Enjoy cinco de mayo :)

Gosh by 5 days I was eating pretty much whatever I could eat. No Crunchy tacos.. but I remember steak, salad. etc.. And I had all 4 done at once.I just cut every thing up tiny and the food more in the middle of my mount, not way in the back.

Just don't push it and continue to keep up with the maintenance.

I was 22, my son 14, my daughter 16 when we had all four removed at the same time. Each had four, we didn't all do it at the same time cause clearly I didn't give birth at the age of six. We were eating non crunchy foods the next day. I think we were eating anything after day two.

I was the only one who had a problem because my then husband didn't get my antibiotics filled until the next day. Still once I had them filled the infection was gone in a day.

Just make sure you are taking your antibiotics and you should be fine.

perfect timing on this question: my 15yo just had all 4 removed today. He's going nuts! He's starving...he's had Jello, pudding, Gatorade, water, & is now having some soup. He wants real food! It's going to be a looooong weekend. :)

I think the difference on pain level is due to location. The lower jaw takes a lot of pressure during extraction...a lot of pressure on the TMJ. Some of your discomfort could be coming from this. Also, was the tooth fully erupted? In my son's case, all 4 were bony impactions...with the lower coming in sideways instead of upright. I expect he will be sore thru the weekend. Good Luck to you...

My bottoms hurt a lot worse than my tops too. I had all four removed.

I pretty much did what I *felt* like doing. If it was comfortable to eat, I ate. Just do not do any sucking whatsoever on straws or eat anything that would cause you to suck. The sucking can cause the dry socket. Also obviously avoid any very hard, very crunchy or very sharp foods (like doritos).

After this long you should be able to start trying solids you feel like eating.

Everyone is different, I always played it safe after an extraction, the last one I had done hurt unbearably I got up from a chair because I dropped my book and when I bent over a sharp pain knifed through my jaw bone and the extraction sight and my mouth filled with blood. after that happened the pain went away. I ate alot of yogurt and drank alot of smoothies, the best thing to do to ease the pain is warm salt water, it will take the soreness out and heal it quicker.... I also ate alot of soups, hope this helps. I hope you feel better soon... try the warm salt water it has always worked for me....

hi there, I had my wisdom teeth pulled many years ago, and I tried to do what you are doing, eat something soft, etc, and I still got a dry socket. So I would suggest just doing what the dentist says, and making sure you clean out the area too when you eat, do they still have you swish a little water in it with a syringe? It helps to make sure you get any little food particles out. I didn't know tomorrow was the day for cindo de mayo, and I was wondering. At least margaritas are safe!!! Have a great weekend!!

Don't take chances. Do what the doc said. You can pretend it's Cinco de Mayo later.

Honestly, you don't want to end up with a cheek that looks like you have the mumps and the doc have to end up lancing it to get rid of infection. I know what that is like from personal experience. I hope that's enough to get you to behave...!

Smiles, and happy cinco de mayo with your super soft foods!

As long as you take antibiotics, and rinse your mouth after you have any food (with special care to rinse the area where the stitches are...you probably were given a syringe with a bent nozzle to help rinse the back area), any food is ok.

The only thing that matters is, you should be able to feel comfortable biting and chewing. And start slow, and progress slowly. You don't want your stitches getting opened, or some hard food bruising your already sore area. If you feel you did any damage, stop eating, rinse, and give it some rest.

2 days. Max. And yes, lower jaw wisdom tooth extraction hurts like crazy, but it'll pass. :)
