Well tomorrow my son is trying again on stimulant meds in hopes that it won't react badly. He's bipolar and we've tried several meds but all ended in psychosis like behaviors, and extreame aggression. Common for bipolar people. So after seeing him struggle so bad in school, we realized his clonidine just wasnt cutting it...so we decided to give it another go, and SLOWLY introduce the meds over the summer. So mandatory question, any ideas on indoor activities for a 7 year old and 1 year old? Our weather sucks right now so might be cooped up inside a few days. TIA

What can I do next?

Good Luck!

How about a camp out in the living room with a full on fort and everything? Watching movies as a family in your cool fort?

Painting is a big hit at my house?

Playing cards or board games? My boys are 9&7 and LOVE to play poker...the lil' card sharks :)

Set up ALL his hot wheel tracks at once, all over the house? We've one this, it's way cool!!

Good luck! I don't have any experience with what you are dealing with, so can't give any advice at all, but just want to send you my best in hopes that this works...~

If you don't mind a mess, take a cookie sheet and pour some coarse grain on it (like cornmeal, oatmeal, instant potatoes) and let them play in it with cars & trucks.

Build a tent.

Indoor obstacle course.

Close the curtains and play with flashlights.

I used to get Family Fun and would cut out all the cute play ideas and saved them for a rainy day. They might have some good ideas on their website.

Good luck with the medication!

Good luck!!

You are a GREAT mom for searching out every avenue to help your son!!!

I am sure this has not been an easy road!

Since I've not been through what you are dealing this - I don't know what triggers would be bad for your son so I don't know what else to suggest to do with them.

I would try games to occupy the time..if it's just raining - no lightning and thunder? I would play outside in the rain! :)

GOOD LUCK!!!

Good luck to you! It sounds like you did a good job easing his system into the level of meds he needs. Most psychosis drugs require doses by adjustment. His little body probably couldn't handle the doses he was initially given, poor little guy.

I have a 7 yr old boy too. We don't spend alot of time indoors over the summer but when we do, I try to make our time fun.

We have Storycubes - dice looking things but with different symbols/pictures on them and you have to tell a story in they order they land. Its pretty cool.

Read together. I got a huge book of children's classic stories - Alice in Wonderland, Jungle Book, Treasure Island etc and even though he's an excellent reader, I still like to read these kinds of stories to him.

Blow up some balloons! He can get some excercise hitting one with his hand or tennis racket, or you guys can play a game of volleyball. My son likes to try and hit a balloon by throwing another balloon at it. Its very challenging...take my word for it :)

Look on the internet for basic tae kwon do or karate moves, and practice them.

Get a survival or outdoor book on how to tie different knots, like the boy scouts do. Or I'm sure you can look it up on the internet. Most of them will have step by step guides how to tie knots. You can use long rope or new round shoe strings. Knots are always fun to learn for boys.

I like to buy big packages of paper plates and straws, and give them to him with a roll of tape and see what kind of creation he comes up with.

Never underestimate the power of coloring at any age. Especially if you color a picture together - sort of like tag team where you draw one thing and then he adds on another and so on. Its fun and the picture you end up with might be really cute. Get some butcher paper and spread it out where you have room. Butcher paper is always fun to color on.

It has been raining down here too. We had a friend over the other day and he taught my 7 year old some card tricks. My son loved them and is trying to master them so he can do them to his friends. Your son might like do learn card tricks??
Or Slap Jack is always a fun card game for boys.
All the best!
