Withholding Pee & Poop

My daughter just turned 3 and is in pull-ups which I think was my FIRST mistake. We have not really tried to "potty train" but in March she was VERY interested and saying she wanted to wear panties so we bought her some and started sitting on the potty...she peed a couple of times but soon lost interest. I think her interest came from her friends at school b/c almost all of them were wearing big girl/boy undies and going on the potty. Since they we haven't really done much...we have tons of potty books and Potty Power DVD but last week she held her pee for 22 hours! We ended up at the doctor and she peed when we were walking out the door to go. The doctor said this was common and just to take it easy but we weren't putting pressure in the first place. Over the past week she is holding her pee almost all day (8 hours) and now holding her poop I believe. She keeps saying she has to go but won't.

I am DESPERATE for good, honest advice from parents whose have experience with a child who withholds! The doctor said she is trying to potty train herself which kind of makes sense but I don't get it. She won't wear panties and I don't feel like I should put her in them b/c not b/c of accidents but b/c it encourages her to HOLD it. I thought about going back in diapers but my husband thinks that is harsh. I know people who have kids that have recurring UTI and bowel issues from withholding so that is what I'm afraid of! If you have experience with this please help!

What can I do next?

I told my 3 year old when we ran out of diapers, we were going to wear pull ups. I said they don't make diapers for 3 year olds. She was fine but would not go near the potty. She wore pullups for a week and used them like diapers. I made a Potty Box with bubbles, markers, stickers, ect. Stuff we don't usually play with that she likes. She could only use them on the potty. This past Saturday when she woke up I told her we were out of pullups and it was panties only. It worked. She trained herself. Maybe if there is something interesting that can only be used on the potty (besides books) she will be more interested in sitting on it more often. Keep the sits short to keep the toy interesting. Good luck!!

My daughter would hold pee and she did have a couple of UTI's which resulted in her having to take an awful test for reflux (to the kidney) involving a catheter. The pediatrician suggested that she sit on the potty on a schedule to develop the habit of peeing regularly. But, unlike your daughter, she was already potty trained. If you want to prevent UTI's, I found some yummy heart shaped cranberry tablets at a health food store that I gave her daily and that was the end of the UTI's!

My son had a similar problem. I set up the little potty with a box of his favorite things next to it, and told him he should just go whenever he needed to. I would also tell him these really good stories every night before bed. However, I would get about half way through, then quit. I would say he could hear the rest of the story after he peed or pooped. After that, I wouldn't mention the story or the potty again. Pretty soon (usually the next day), he would sneak in there and do it. I don't know if he was shy or just wanted to hear the end of the story, but it worked. As for the poop, he withheld so much that he got constipated, so we had to give him Miralax for a while. It is a mild stool softner available over the counter. It seemed to help him go because it was harder to hold it in. Feel free to e-mail me if you need more information. The Miralax is great, but you have to use it carefully. I will be happy to visit with you about it if you are interested.

I dont have to much advice but I will tell you that my daughter potty trained herself when she was ready and when she did start wearing panties she went to only peeing a couple of times a day. The doctor said its normal and kids will go when they need to. In the begining I tried to get her to go more often but she couldnt. I hope you get some great advice!

When I potty trained my daughter (28 months)I was shocked that she only would go pee a couple of times a day. When she woke up in the morning she would wait probably 1 1/2 to 2 hours before she would go pee. It drove me crazy I really thought she was holding it and not wanting to go. Now she is 3 and has been potty trained for 16 months and still only goes a few times a day even though she she drinks a lot durning the day. Some kids just don't go very as often as others. I just potty trained my son in Feb. and he went through it as well. The only difference is he was holding his and the doctor told me to push liquids if he has an accident just clean it up and don' worty. They told me not to go back to diapers he will figure it all out. Sure enough after a couple of very stressful weeks he stopped and is doing great now.
