OKAY, HERE'S MY STORY. I'M DUE AT THE END OF NOVEMBER. I'D LIKE TO GO HOME FOR CHRISTMAS, BUT AM NOT SURE IF THE FLIGHT WOULD BE TOO LONG FOR A 1 MONTH OLD. HOME IS HAWAII & IT IS APPROXIMATELY A 10 HOUR FLIGHT. I'M NOT SURE IF IT WILL AFFECT THE BABY'S EARS OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT. DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY EXPERIENCE W/THIS?

What can I do next?

Go home ! All these women are right. They are eaiest at this age, too little to get bored or try to crawl away. No health worries that I know of. I traveled overseas with my son Joe when he was about the same age and he was a GREAT traveler.

Happy holidays!

love joe (that last bit written by Joe himself who is now 6 and staying home sick from school)

I also traveled that long with my daughter when she was 4 weeks old. She slept most of the time and her ears did not bother her at all. It effects them mostly when they are older. In her short 3 years she has been on a plane over 20 times and believe me the first few trips were the easiest. Just try and feed her after you take off and get off the ground while you are ascending. Then again when you start to descend. My daughter slept through the whole ride so I never had any problems.

Just some words of advice, you must get up and walk around frequently for your sake. The only thing that I worried about was the germs on the plan and wouldn't you know it, someone behind us was coughing horribly. I asked the flight attendant if there was any way we could move our seat because of my concern and they were very very helpful and moved us to the front of the plane.

Don't worry...........I have flown to France back and forth about 14 times when all the way up until I was 8 months pregnant and even as soon as my baby was 2 months old. They sleep the whole time. It is not a big deal at all. Trust me. It is just a hassle going through the airport with them (I was alone when I flew).......so I had to carry all the baggage and baby carrier etc. by myself. They sleep on the plane and the stewards/ess will help you alot (ie. watch the baby when you have to use the bathroom etc..)
Don't worry - Go home for Christmas and have fun! : )

I agree that traveling with a newborn is MUCH easier than traveling with an older child who wants to move around a lot. However, you must consider that you don't know how old your child wlil be at Christmas..your could be earlier than your due date or later. My daughter was borm 2 weeks after her due date.

Activities I had planned to participate in "one month" after her due date were not appropriate when she was 10 days old....for me mostly. I was completely exhsusted and didn't have the energy to deal with leaving the house for 2 hours let alone navigating an airport at one of the busiest times of the year with all the "stuff" you need for a baby.

Is it possible to go home to see family in January and have a "repeated" Christmas? Just a thought. Good luck on whatever you decide (and maybe buy a refundable ticket so you can decide later)

Hi M.

I have traveled with an infant a number of times. Actually I have found that it is easiest when they are newborns. Just make sure the baby is sucking during takeoff and landing (a bottle, breast, whatever) and they should not be bothered. You may also want to check with your doctor and ask if it is okay to give your child the recomended dose of tylenol before flying. Tylenol does not hurt a child but may relieve some irritability and calm him/her. I have done this, but you would want to ask your doctor since your child will only be a month old.

I agree, it's easiet when they're young. My son flew for hte first time when he was jsut three weeks old. It was only a two hour flight, but regardless, they sleep all the time anyway at that age, they don't knwo the difference. Jsut nurse/bottlefeed/use a pacifier during take off and landing for the ears and you'll have no troubles. I concur with the other mom that my biggest concern was germs. I had no choice because it was a family emergency, i woudl not actually have done it (because of hte germs) voluntarily. Really good point fomr the other mom though, that you have no idea when your baby will decide to be born...there is NO WAY i coudl have flown a week after delivery, iw as like the walking dead, so exhausted! If I was in your situation, becasue of the unpredictability of your delivery date, what I woudl do is either postpone comign home and do it in January or I woudl convince my family to come visit ME. good luck! L.

Just wanted to respond and let you know that my family went to Hawii with my 6 week old nephew, at the time, and my sister said "the best time to fly" he slept the whole time so don't even worry about it... I have flown with my daughter since she has been two months old and just remember to have them nursing on the way up and on the way down...

Hi M.,
I only have one who is now 9 but I have been traveling back to India (with connections in UK it is a 2o hour journey) regularly when I was pregnant with him and since he was one month old to visit family. May be each child is different. It was a breeze traveling with him. As an infant I would give him some warm milk when we got on and he would go off to sleep. You may want to cover his ears with some soft cotton. I used to make tiny balls and gently place them just inside each year and cover them with my finger tips when we take of and land
Since yours is so tiny another option is to have her suck on a bottle may be with warm milk/warm water.
Hope this helps. Good luck with your trip.

i dud take a flight from the east coast to california when my daughter was that young, it was fine, i just breastfed her during take off and landing, it is much easier to travel with an infant than when they are older, as long as they are not colicy.

Hi

I have travelled with a 6 week old son to India, more than 22 hrs flight. Its okay they do great. so dont worry and enjoy your holidays. since they are very little, all they do is eat ans sleep. If you are worried abt the ears give the baby a pacifier at take off and landing, or feed him if you can.
