So first of all thanks for all the good questions AND answers Mammas!

My little girl is 9 months old now. Daddy works 9-6 and I can't help but be bored sitting at home all day. We don't have many friends here at all, I have only lived here for a year and I was 5 and a half months pregnant when we moved. So, the few people I have met work during the day and don't have small children. I have always been a hard-worker, I used to work 7 shifts in 6 days! But now I have turned into the domesticated housewife, without a social life.

I have had 2 jobs since having the baby (I was working 6 days a week: 1 double shift, and 5 8-11 hour shifts split between a bar and an office. I have some college: a VA certification (Veterinary Assistant).

I believe myself to be a very well-rounded, educated woman, but I can't find a night job! Has anyone else had this issue? Is it just the economy like my boyfriend keeps telling me? Am I being too picky trying to keep my daugter out of daycare and trying to find night time work? What kinds of other jobs are there for me to do at night? What do you do to keep your sanity while being at home ALL the time? Is there a job I can do out of the house or with my daughter that is actually legit???

What can I do next?

As for the bored part... The local libraries have story time. They have it by age group which makes it easier to meet moms with kids the same age. No, she is not too little for the library. Put her in the stroller and take her for walks now that it is getting cooler out. You may just meet some people doing the same thing. Is there a park near you that you can walk to where young kids may be playing and you can meet other parents? I know it is hard until they get into preschool and you can meet more parents. But, you need to get out of the house. Someone else mentioned medical transcription work, but, more Dr. offices are using less of that as they move to electronic medical records.

Since you have a VA certification what about working in an emergency animal hospital? Are there any open 24 hours in your area that need a VA for the night shift? Just an idea.

If you can't find a job that you like, then you can at least try to make some friends. It is hard, I know, and I am finally starting to make friends where I live. I found some mom & tot playgroups on meet up.com and also joined the moms' group at our church/pre-school.

Some vets are open in the evening. Hospitals also have evening and night positions. Unit secretary doesn't take any specialized training. I don't know the requirements for blood drawing, but if you can draw from animals maybe people too?

I clean houses part time and it pays well and I take my daughter with me (she's almost 3). No one has minded that I bring her and it's nice to get out and work.

Maybe take some night school classes instead... so when you do go back to a day job you'll have more education under your hat.
Night jobs are probably hard to find, you wouldnt want to work in a convenience store, it's too dangerous these days. Maybe a motel desk clerk? Arent there emergency rooms for animals that are open 24hr? I guess not or you'd probably already be doing it huh...
If you dont need the money, I'd just enjoy staying home and being a mom for now... you have tons of outside work years left in your future.

M., I was somewhat in your shoes. I had worked for a corporate company for 10 years and worked myself up from installation to the office, to sales associate. I quit that when my1st son was 1, because I didn't like that so much of my time and attention was away from him, even when I was home. I then did house cleaning- but the caliber people that I cleaned for (in order to pay the mortgage) working only 2-3 days a week would never stand for me bringing a child with me...so after the birth of my 2nd son, I began researching something I could do at home. That included data entry, medical transcriptionist, etc. But I needed something that I could choose my own schedule and my own pay/amount I wanted to work. Basically I wanted to call the shots. So far, this is working for me- and I get to talk to people- other then the kids! ;) It is a Inc. 500 company that has been around 25 yrs. Earned the torch award from the BBB several times- A good track record helped put my mind at ease that they are legit! Msg me if you want more info and I can send you to a website! Hope this helps! I do most of my on line work in early AM and late nites, and then just answer and make any phone calls during the day while I am with my children. I don't think a WAHM job is always easy, but it should at least be enjoyable! :)

Good question, M.. As per Bethany here below, I used to work in an office where the woman who came in in the evenings to clean the office brought a couple of kids with her! She showed around 4 or 5 pm when people were still working, but no one minded. Waitressing is another idea; but I've also heard of evening jobs where the mother can do typing transcription in the evenings (EG one I know of did medical transcription). You wouldn't even have to leave the house. Can you type?
