Worried About My 3 Yr Old Who Gets Frequent Fevers (UPDATE)

Hi moms! Would this concern you? My 3 yr old gets fevers when his siblings have no sign of illness. He'll get a fever of 103/104 and I'll take him to ped and they'll just say must be virus he has no signs of illness. What worries me is that his siblings never catch these fevers, which happen about 3 times a year. Most of the time when one is sick, they all are....so it makes me wonder why he is alway the one with fevers and no other symptoms? Has anyone else experienced this? When they do all 3 catch the same thing, he is my child who will run a high fever whereas the others will stay in 101 range - so I know he must be prone to fevers. Do you think his body just fights viruses differently? Do your kids get sick in the same way, or do you have one that is more 'sickly'?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

In talking to the pediatrician, it seems that frequent fevers of unknown origin can be a sign of cancer (leukemia, etc) so they are going to run some blood tests on him. Now I'm really worried!

UPDATE: His pediatrician ordered blood tests to rule out Juvenile arthritis and leukemia. The blood work came back fine. She says his immune system must just handle illness differently. He has always run high fevers, even as a newborn (after his shots) so I guess he's just wired differently.

My daughter is only two but in the last year she has had about 3-4 times with a fever...no other symptoms and nobody else gets sick. Sounds like his immune system may be alittle weaker and therefore has to runa higher fever to fight the illness. Most kids illnesses are virus and unless it is one of the five they can test for doc cannot doanything. MAke sure they are testing you child for strep. The last fever my daughter had turned out to be strep and rewuires antibotics. You can recover from strep withour the antibiotics but it canled t other problems which could be major such s kidney disease. So as long as you are tking them to the doc I do not think it is anything to worry about and it will help build up their immjune syetme before school starts

Some kids get sick more than others, or are affected by it more. In our family, it's my husband! And if he's new to preschool or something else, his immune system is getting the workout now (building immunity, and later he may not get so sick).

Treat him symptomatically. Give him tylenol for the fever. Ask your doc when you should call for a fever (usually it's after a couple days I think).

My sisters son gets fevers about 6 times a year that are that high. He just fights infections that way and does not have cancer. It has been that way for him since he was little and now he is 12. I wouldn't get too worried about cancer. There are so many other things it could be. Just a side note, limit the amount of tylenol you give him as they now say it damages some of the organs. My family all uses the 'wet sock treatment'. With a high fever, put a pair of sock that have been wet and wrung out on the childs feet, put a DRY pair over the wet socks, preferably wool but we don't have that so I pick a thick pair to go over it. Sometimes, halfway though the night if they wake up, the socks are dry and we wet them again. It brings the fever down and they sleep great without meds. I even asked my pediatrician about it and he said he believesit would work and sounds great so you don't give as much medicine to them. My kids all love it and beg for it when they get fevers. Good luck. follow your gut.

Is he teething? My daughter would get horrible fevers when she was getting teeth. Many people - including nurses and doctors - will tell you that kids don't get fevers when they are cutting teeth, but I've talked to many a mom and grandma that beg to differ!

If he's not showing any signs of illness.. how do you know he even has a fever? I wouldn't worry if the Dr isn't worried - especially if there is no other sign of sickness.

God Bless and Merry Christmas!!

My daughter (#2 of 3 kids) has the same issue. She gets a fever everytime she has a cold and a higher fever with a severe cold. The big thing for her is that her tonsils flare up EVERY TIME. I give her Tylenol/Motrin to lower the fever. After 2-3 days if it isn't gone, we go BACK to the docs who tell me it's her tonsils again. We have Flonase for her in the winter when it's worse, but essentially I've been told that some people just get sicker. As an example, our last cold, my two sons had a runny nose and slight cough for a few days. My daughter had massive runny nose, slight cought and fever for 5 days. Her tonsils were covered with mucus. We used the Flonase for 3 days + Tylenol, lots of liquids and LOTS of rest. She's fine now. Last winter was the big "a-ha" for us as she had FOUR ear/throat infections in three months! The doc put her on 3 steriods and Flonase (3 months). Finally cleared up and now we know what to expect.

Good luck and feel free to PM me! I understand where you are coming from! :)

Hi there- so I was reading your email and I hope I can be of a little help.. Fevers are the body's way fo fighting off infection and helping the body heal.. I know that we are all told and all think that fevers are bad and we immediatly want to give ourselves and our children afever reducer or pain fighter but the truth is that someimes, most of the timefevers are a good thing. You are right to take your child to the doc if the fever is above 102-103 degrees. Some children get fevers more frequently becasue their immune systems seem to have to work harder to fight off but I wouldn't be to overly concerned youseem to know when the fever is getting dangerous.

They all get sick differently for sure. I have one son that will catch any cold out there and it ALWAYS turns into croup, I also have another son that gets a fever of 103 to 105 several times a year and almost every time he gets a tooth right after. The doctors told me that teeth do not create such a reaction but he got a lot of teeth in his little life and had the fever EVERY time. I discounted the doc.

That being said, the biggest deal is to control it, I know that fevers can cause other problems such as seisures and such. Be sure to give Motrin or Tylenol to keep the fever down.

He is probably just more prone to getting all the virus' out there. More than likely he will have a very strong immune system when he is older. I wouldn't worry too much.

Good luck.
