So I have been thinking about my petsmart question. I am wanting my puppy to pick out his bed and toys only because I want to get him things that he likes. I do the same with my son. I dont want to buy him a bed that he doesnt like and wont use!

Would you let your pet have a choice in what he/she gets or are my pets over spoiled? Earl May let my Gpigs pick out their stuff.

Just to edit. We pick out 2 or three that we like and then they choose. Food we pick. But really my son picks out his outfits after I pick out 3 for him to choose from. I like giving my kids and pets a choice. As for toys... We will pick out his training toys but I dont want to buy a squeeky duck he wont touch. JMO

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I really love these answers. Kinda makes me laugh. You can tell me that hunting is bad because animals have feelings however when I spoil my dog and treat it like a member of the family I have a screw loose... I love this!

O btw I know he wont choose much but if he freaks at a squeaky toy at the store I know not to buy them. and he will be in the cart.. so no fights. If he pee's it looks like I will be cleaning it. so sorry I posted this!

If the dog wont fit the collar will you buy it anyways. If the gpig is to small for the tunnel will you buy it? If the toy scares the bjesus out of him do you buy it... that is all I am saying guys... Yes if he hates hard beds I'm not going to spend 50 bucks on it. I will buy him a different one that may be cheaper. you totally overanalized everything.

The pet doesnt care who picks the toys out - but if you have fun bringing him along and letting him pick, do it.

I used to do that with my ferret. I would take him to Petsmart, and pull out 3-4 different toys or beds... Whichever one he took to the most we would buy.

Dogs are a bit different... they will play with/eat whatever is handy. I used to take my dog to the treat bar, and see which of those he seemed to like the best, but that's about the extent of his decision-making.

You get that a dog cannot cognitively make shopping decisions, right? I mean... he's a DOG.

Over spoiled. And over anthropomorphized. It's not a person, it's a dog. <eyeroll>

Way too spoiled and over indulged.

Would you let your 18 month old pick out his clothes and bed and food? Not me.

I'm the dad. I make the decision. (Unless my wife makes the decision.)

I own the pet. The pet does not own me. I make the decisions.

Good luck to you and yours.

If my dog were going to pay for the bed, then by all means he can certainly pick it out ;)

My puppy is spoiled but she doesn't pick out her stuff, my daughter does that and everything is pink. We haven’t gotten too many toys but I was sure to get a bone for her to chew. It has helped so much with training her to not chew the furniture or shoes (she never has).

I would just get a couple of squeaky toys and a bone for chewing/teething. I also get those Kong bones for her crate when we go out (they are like a special treat). I will not buy rawhide bones since we have leather furniture.

My daughter picked out a dog bed that came with a blanket and bone shaped pillow/squeaky toy and yes it is pink. So far she loves her small squeaky toy that looks like a beaver (we have had to replace it once already), her soft rope for tug of war and her bone (I think it is a real buffalo rib bone).

Well if you have time to waste....just make sure they have a good return policy.

Okay I have to add this is a totally stupid idea. Ignoring the spoiling standpoint, say rover brushed over a toy or bed. This happens a lot at stores that allow animals, ya know. So then you bring Fido with you, he smells Rover and is all over that toy or bed. Until ode to Rover wears off, then he wants nothing to do with it.

They are animals for crying out loud, they don't make decisions like we humans do, don't presume that they do or it will drive you nuts.

I hope you are kidding. If not you have way to much time on your hands and possibly a screw loose.

Pets are allowed there, so sure, take him. I just don't know if he will really be "picking" his stuff or just looking and sniffing at everything! He won't understand that he's picking something to take home. :)

the only interest my dog had while he was a puppy and we used to bring him to petco was running around like a maniac sniffing things.. i highly doubt hes going to "pick out" his own stuff those stores are usually sensory over load for them especially when they are little ... o0 and just a funny story for u (and the reason why we had to buy him a shorter leash) we had my puppy on a pretty long leash, i went to get something my dad wasnt paying attention he was looking at soemthing and my dog went running through the fish department, grabbed a bag of the stones they use for the bottom of fish tanks, ripped it open and dragged it all over the store lol .. good luck

Just wanted to say I went to PetSmart for the first time on Saturday. Probably won't go back - dogs were peeing all over the floor. No less than three dogs lifted their legs while we were in there and we were there for less than 20 minutes! I felt like I had to walk looking at the floor to keep from stepping in "stuff." Yuck!!!!!

No, but I didn't over-buy at first either. I waited to see what my puppy naturally gravitated towards . . .

I also like bedding that's easily washable.

My puppy has one bed that has lots of fuzz and she picks at it. Not super convenient.

I bought several types of chewies, and "animals" and she still has many of them 10 months later.

I'm careful with stuff from China.

No, I make a choice, my pet likes it or does not. I have not yet hit a sour note with my dogs. I kind of think it is silly saying here Fifi .. pick out your own bed! Sorry, but it is silly to me.

If you lay down on the bed before you give it to him, he will like any bed you give him.
