Would You Fire This Babysitter?

Hi Moms, I just found this babysitter about 3 weeks ago. She's avalible a lot and is very punctual, but there's just one thing. She's in High School, and seems very responsible, but today I found gum under our coffee table, i know this is trivial, but I can't help think, ok, if she is not respecting our things, how is she doing as a sitter while we are away? My daughter is a toddler with some verbal skills, she seems to really like her, but my daughter is an extrovert and likes pretty much everyone. I know it couldn't have been anyone else because no one else comes to our house really. We are pretty much homebodies, and I never give my daughter gum. I'm probably coming off as paranoid, but I just can't shake these feelings. I like her, but she is a girl of few words, and that's ok, i'm kind of like that too, she's just hard to read. Any advice would be greatly appriciated. I am relatively new to the area, my family is 1000 miles away so it's hard to find a sitter anyway. Thanks ladies!
P.S. If anyone knows of anyone realiable in the clearwater/largo area, feel free to pass on their info

So What Happened?

Thank you to everyone who responded and took my question seriously. I agree that the trust is gone, and I do not have a good feeling about her coming over anymore. The search continues for someone else. Thanks for the idea about checking and posting in college newspapers, that's a really good idea. As a first time mom, I am happy that I have a place to go to ask questions and know that the majority of the moms will take my concerns seriously. Thanks so much ladies!!

If you can't shake off that uneasy feeling, your intuition is definitely telling you something. If I were you, I would let her go because the trust is gone. Even if you were to ask if it was her who put the gum there, she will most likely deny it. If you are worried about finding another babysitter, you shouldn't. There are a lot of reliable people out there, you just need to do a little bit of digging. Hopefully someone on here can lead you to a nice person. But trust your gut, it's telling you something. Good luck and let me know how things go.

If you decide to keep her, I would make a point of telling her that you don't let your child have gum.
A possible way to find a sitter is to put an ad in a college newspaper or on a college job board. College students will have their own transportation, and often have flexible schedules. I know, good sitters are hard to find!
Good luck.

just keep checking for more gum. This may be your only clue to whether it was her or not.

I don't think you have any solid evidence that the gum is hers. Was she chewing gum when she came in the door and then she wasn't? Hmm I don't think that would stand up in court. There has never ever been another child or person in your house that you can say didn't put it there? Two things you can do.... 1) put up a nanny camera 2) check the gum for her DNA. If the DNA comes back as hers then fire her :)
