Would You Hire an Attorney

My husband is an attorney and knows some of the local ones who advertise. I know too much about them. No, I wouldn't.

No. My husband and I are both attorneys. I would only hire someone recommended by someone who has hired them previously, knows they have some special expertise or knows someone who personally vouches for them. It doesn't have to be someone expensive; less expensive attorneys can be found by word of mouth or personal recommendation. The local bar association is another source of recommendation.

If they are good enough, they don't need to advertise on TV. They have enough work load coming in from word of mouth without paying for TV time.

ETA: And from my personal experience, having worked in a law office for about 10 years, any of the ones in our community that advertised on TV you did NOT want to hire. They were the always always the ones who would settle quickly so they didn't have to go to court, and every lawyer in town knew it.

I would prefer to go with a more credible person who was referred to me by my investment advisor, CPA, or banker, etc.

A "good" attorney does not need to advertise.

My BIL is lead attorney for a major corporation in Pittsburgh and he has never advertised and none of his partners advertise either. They don't need to because they get clients based on their experience.

Absolutely not! They are often referral services and you don't actually hire the face on TV.

Sure. Why not? A lot of people have this hang up that only sharks would advertise on TV but for a lot of types of law, it's kind of accepted now. Besides... if your other choice is picking someone random from the phone book, you can at least be fairly confident that the lawyer advertising on TV has a large enough practice with support staff... because TV ads cost a lot of money!

You have to pick the right tool for the right job...so, maybe. Depends.

Depends. If it's a class-action suit and they are in charge of the class, then yes. If you hire a local attorney, they would probably just turn around and hire the other guy anyway, then charge you for it. If you have your own case, then find a reputable attorney you feel good with.

I actually used one of these types of attorneys years ago just for a consultation. It was cheap, obviously knew the laws of Ohio, and answered all my questions. If I had wanted/needed to pursue my case, I probably would have used him as well.

Whatever method you use to attain a lawyer, check him/her out by doing a search on the internet. Start with your state's bar association.

No, although I've never been on that situation, I would think they're more expensive, not necessarly better, since advertisement on T.V. is very expensive.
