We visit with my husband's extended family on Christmas day. We don't know any of them really well. We see them a few times a year. Gift giving is pretty casual. You can bring something, or not. If you do, it's encouraged to spend $5 or less on each family. We like to make something for the families, because they always purchase something for my son, and got us gifts for our wedding and baby showers. Generally, people just make baked goods for the families. There is a lot of cookies, fudge, and candies. I thought of making a loaf of bread and some apple butter for each family. I'd make the bread the morning of, so it's pretty fresh.
Not being much of a bread person, I'm not sure if everyone will like it. I thought I'd ask you ladies. Is this a gift you would like?
Thanks :)
Yes, I know bread takes a while!! We don't meet until much later in the day, so I have plenty of time!! :)
Thanks, ladies!

I love that idea, if everyone else is bringing sweets then why not change it up a little and bring bread this year! Also I agree with many of the others, homemade things are the best gifts, whether it's food or crafty things for the family and/or home. Besides that what kind of junk can $5 get anyway....so in that case homemade goodies of any type are great and far better than a $5 gift.

I would LOVE some homemade bread! Especially warmed up with some melted butter on it! YUMMY! And honestly, I would appreciate that more than a store-bought gift because of the thoughtfulness and time put into preparing it...just for me. Wow! I would feel so special if I was a part of your family and received that type of a gift!

Heck yeah! Who doesn't love home made bread? I love apple butter too but I realize not everyone does. You can't get much for $5 so I think it's a great idea. Ever thought of drawing names or doing a pirate gift exchange?

Can I come be a part of your family? :)
I would absolutly LOVE IT! I make bread myself, so I really appreciate the effort others go through to make bread for me...and I enjoy eating homemade bread others made because it means they love me. The apple butter would be an added bonus. It's so gooooood!
For me personally, it's he homemade gifts at Christmas that are the best. Go for it!

Meh. I'd rather get something in a package that keeps so I can eat it later or bring it out when I have guests: small Dove chocolates, little packages of truffles, a box of assorted Pepperidge Farm cookies. Or a couple jars of apple butter or specialty jams would be nice.
I think your family's idea of small affordable gifts is wonderful.

Home baked goods of any type are a great gift. I am not a bread person myself, but if someone gave us that, my husband would love them forever.

I think that would be a great gift! I know if we were to spend less than $5 per family I'd do some baked good and would love to have something other than the typical cookies, fudge and cupcakes.

Yes, and depending on the kind of bread (if you do a banquette or something like that), wrap it in foil and tell them to just put it in the freezer. A hot oven or grill for a few minutes makes it nice and crunchy.

Homemade bread? Uh, hmm, let me see.... Oh my gosh how totally awesome is a freshly baked loaf of bread?!!! While lots of people make coffee cakey breads like zucchini/banana/pumpkin, it is a rare and glorious thing to be given a homemade loaf of bread that's actually bread. I don't even think I know anyone who makes bread, now that the breadmaker trend seems to have died. Also it's great to have something that's not sweet on Christmas. Can I be your pretend sister?

Yes!!! Or if that's too time consuming, go to Great Harvest (don't know if you have one of those) They have the BEST breads! I have a bad little habit - spending $8 for a loaf of bread (extreme cinnamon chip is my fave) each week! But hey, I don't do Starbucks, so it's all good, right?? Ahhhhh, LOVE bread :)

Nah--not my bag. I mean I like bread, but a gift of bread? Just seems odd.
If they are buying your son gifts, I think something a little more....just my .02

It would be really nice to include a list of ingredients for people who are concerned about that type of thing. :) Have fun baking!!
I think that it's a great idea!! It's a nice change from the usual holiday sweets. Holiday sweets are everywhere so I think many would find some bread refreshing! I thought I'd include these bread in a jar things.
Enjoy your holidays!
