I think my 16 month old may have a yeast diaper rash. Anyone with any tricks to get rid of it. I've got a call in to the nurse. But am just wondering what the "real experts" have to say about it.
Thanks ladies!

B.,
My daughter was about the same age when we went through the same thing. We went to 3 different doctors and through a lot of different meds, but the thing that ended up clearing her up was a weekend trip to the lake and we let her play in the swimming pool for a couple days. I'm not a doctor of any means, but she cleared right up. Hope any advise helps.

After working in daycare for 6 years and having three of my own.I actually have a lot of experience with that.Yeast is usually a solid red rash.(verses looking spotty like a normal diaper rash) It will not go away with diaper cream. You need to get athletes foot cream (lotrimin) off brand is fine. You pt it on the area just like diaper cream. You can also use feminine creams but they are more pricey and it's the same thing.

My daughter had similar problems. We eventually had to get a ointment form of Nystatin from her pediatrician to treat the yeast infection. We also had to try a concoction of mylanta and the caldesene powder that comes in a pink bottle. We mixed it together and painted it on her bottom. Now I only use Arbonne baby products on her skin.

try Bag Balm! you can get it at some drug stores, but also at any FEED stores, since it's for cows, but it works! My pediatrician used to stock it!

Hi B.! Some things that would work for you is some Renew Lotion and Melagel would work wonders and clear it up in no time. If you rub Renew on each time you change the diaper then this would help as a prevention. I shop from Melaleuca and work from home with them and help others do the same. You can visit www.livetotalwellness.com/cindygeoff or www.2abetterlife.com We have used their products for 2 years and the Renew would help you out a lot. You can email me directly if you have more specific questions too. Hope that helps!

my daughter had a few bad yeast infections after a round of antibiotics when she was younger. the dr told me to buy monistat cream (or any of the yeast creams sold at drug stores) and rub in all over the OUTSIDE of the area. put diaper rash cream on first and then put the cream all over that. you also want to make sure they keep dry, so if you can let them go without a diaper every now & then that helps keep it dry. i pulled hers off when she was napping and just put a towel under her. it got better in a few days each time. good luck!

My son just went through a bad diaper rash. I'm not sure if it was yeast based or not, but I would use regular diaper rash cream and spread it on really thick. On top of that, I put a layer of Vaseline to "waterproof" it. He had diarrhea, so it took a couple of days to get it cleared up since I was changing a dirty diaper every two hours, but it seemed to do the trick. I'd definitely check with a nurse or doctor though since you might need something more powerful. Good luck!

when my daughter was about that age i thought she had one also...she had a kind of almost creamy discharge all around her privates and her rectum...when i took her to the doctor she recommended the lotrimin or monistat cream but also did a rectal culture...she called me back a couple of days later and explained my daughter had a rectal strep infection...yup the same thing that causes strep throat can cause a rectal infection in some children...kids never cease to amaze me...as a mom you know when something just isn't right so if it doesn't clear up be sure to take her in for a check...good luck

I used a cream the nurse gave me but if you get apple cider vinegar and dilute it (make sure you dilute it, it will sting on baby's skin if you dont) and apply it to the area and it should start to clear up. Dilute it to 1 part vinegar 2 parts water it should be ok. My daughter got a yeast infection because I put her in a bubble bath and didnt know you werent supposed to do that. If thats the case, dont do it anymore. I just didnt know any better and she suffered from my stupidity. Hope this helps!

If it's truely a yeast rash then you have to get the meds for that. I don't think there's an over the counter one for that area and I have had to use the prescription stuff for my daughter once or twice.

Good luck!

Probiotics! You can either have kiddo eat plain yogurt (a little natural fruit in it), Keifer (a yogurt drink found at Target and Whole Foods) OR get a powder or chewable probiotic tablet (found at Whole Foods). Yeast or candida becomes over-abundant in the digestive track and probiotics help regulate the yeast.
Everyone has a little yeast in the body, but it feeds off of sugar and carbs. Try also to have the kiddo drink more water everyday.
I have suffered from AWFUL yeast infections my entire life and found that probiotics (and lots of water) is really the cure.

If it won't go away with Desitin, check in with a pediatrician. Sometimes they get thrush & it won't go away on it's own.

If it really is yeast (google it and look at some pictures or read descriptions to be sure), then home remedies for adult women's yeast infections will probably work. Plain yogurt applied to the area at each change should work, but it will probably be messy. Honey may also work (messy!). Garlic is also good, but I don't think it would work on the entire diaper area since you are NOT supposed to cut it up (women can insert an intact clove in the vagina, but I don't see how you could do that successfully for the entire diaper area).

My daughter had a yeast based rash and we had to get a prescription- over the counter madicines just made it worse. For a regular diaper rash- olive oil (my grandma's remedy) worked like a charm, the rash looked better in 1-2 treatments, but it made the yeast rash worse which is when we took her to the doctor.

My daughter went through the same thing, but after taking her to the dr he said it wasn't yeast but it was a really bad rash. He had us use cortizone cream on the red areas 3 times a day. It was amazing how quickly it worked. Also try letting them run around without a diaper on and air dry that helps too.

My daughter has really sensitive skin, like me and has had a couple of these yeast rashes. My first advice to you is to take her in to the doctor and make sure thats really what it is, don't just call the nurse to find out what to do. If its not a yeast infection (which is what causes yeast diaper rash) and you treat it improperly, you could cauase some serious damage. If you have been to the pediatrician and are sure its yeast, then just get an adult over the counter yeast infection treatment, the cream kind, not the suppositories. Use the tube of cream that it comes with like a diaper rash vream. Do not put it inside of her like an adult would do. It works great and in a couples days it will be gone and you have the rest of the tube around in case it happens again. Hope it helps!

Our pediatrician had us use women's Monistat cream (I bought the 7-day generic), and apply it just like diaper rash cream twice a day. It usually clears things up in 2-3 days.

I have heard that the white stuff is better than the clear for rashes that are super bad and not just a little red.

I have also read somewhere about putting a wet tea bag in their diaper. I would google that and see what you come up with.

Hello B.,
You can use flour or corn starch brown it in a pan. Just let it cool off after browned. Then you can take a salt shaker and sprinkle it on the affected area. It works wonders and its better than anything you buy in the store.
Hope this helps Good Luck, and God Bless!

Corn Starch - Talk about cheap! I have a pizzaria shaker full of it at the changing table! It has worked 90% of the time. Put it on a dry bum, and it'll keep them dry till the next changing.

We've used just about everything on each of our children. We have 3.. What worked on one wouldn't work on the others.. Kind of frustrating. For our oldest son it was Desitin and Corona, for our youngest son it was Corona (you can buy it at Atwoods, yes it is for horses...if you get some make sure you don't get the one with Mentholatum in it, it will burn your baby) and for our daughter, we got a prescription for Nystatin. When she had the yeast diaper rash we also used Lotrimin and then put diaper rash cream on that. We use the off brand of Creamy Desitin on her now. This is more like a trial and error process. Some times one will work great and the next time you use it, it won't do a thing. I hope your daughter gets better soon!!
