Yeast Infection in 9 Month Old?

My little girl always seems to be red in the diaper area, both inside her privates and on the outer lip area. Is there any cream I should be using to help reduce the irritation? Could it be reoccurring yeast infections? How can I tell the difference? I do notice that when I'm changing her diaper or she's taking a bath, she'll scratch the area with her hands (not sure if she's exploring her girly parts or if they truly itch). We go to the doc. for her 9 month check up soon, so I'll be asking more about it then. But for now, I thought I'd ask all of you :)

Thanks in advance.

So What Happened?

I just love Mamasource mommies!!! Thanks for all of the great responses. Her doctor appt. was actually moved, so I have to wait a few more days to ask all of my questions. She does have very sensitive skin, so this may be the reason for all the irritation. Thanks again!

Hi H.,

It is very common for infants to have yeast infections. Especially if she has been on any antibiotics. Yeast infections tend to be a brighter red. At my office, we can use Applied Kinesiology (aka muscle testing) to determine if it is yeast and then prescribe the correct nutrition to counteract the condition. If you have any questions or would like more information, please give me a call at ###-###-#### or visit my website at sullivanchiropractic.com. Thank you! Dr. Sandra S.

my daugher, who is 1 year old was getting a rash often. I took her to the doctor and he prescribe nystatin cream, he also told us not to give her bubble bath's. He said, "do not to fill the sink or tub with water that sometimes it will give them a rash." I followed his direction, did what he said, and the rash has gone away. HOPE THIS HELPS!

Sounds like it could be the nasty to get rid of yeast infection. First of all, make sure that you are drying your babies bottom well after a bath and after each diaper change. Letting your baby air dry without a diaper for 10-15 minutes is really great when you can do it. Second, I would just buy some OTC Lotrimin or whatever brand OTC yeast infection medicine that you prefer. Apply generously at EVERY diaper change and then on top of that use either Aquaphor or Triple Paste on top to seal the area from future wetness. You should see a big difference quickly, but to completely rid yourself of it can be a longer and more challenging process! I also did not use wipes when my kids bottoms were irritated - I used a clean wash cloth with every diaper change which can be cumbersome from a laudry perspective, however the chemicals in the wipes really hurt already irritated little bottoms. If you don't see a difference after several days - I would call the pedi as it could be something like a strep rash, etc. Good luck and hugs to your little angel and her sore bum!

Hey H.,
First make sure it is yeast (via your doctor) and then do what Tammi suggested below. Buy the non-brand name Lotrimin in the foot care aisle at Target/WalMart etc. It's called Clotrimazole Cream 1%. It is anti-fungal and will clear her right up. We use it year round because if it isn't something in the winter, it's the wet swimsuits they live in all spring and summer! It has never failed my two little girls. You're a great mommy for asking and not ignoring the redness. It can be really uncomfortable for that precious girl. Good luck to you!!!

H. try feeding your daughter yogurt first thing for breakfast also for the itching try leaving the diaper of her and don't let her scratch herself because it dose itch, but it will spread when scratched and she will carry the bacteria under her nails & into her mouth. You can get a Anti fungal cream from the pharmacy over the counter which should help it clear it up. Also just sponge bath her till it drys out and only use warm water to clean her up when her diaper is dirty. When you put her down for her nap put a bed pad under her and that way she can sleep with her diaper off warm moisture is also a breeding place for a fungus. Hope this will help you.

At my doctor's office, it is free to call and ask questions, as long as its during business hours. I leave them messages and they call me back at the end of the day.
Also, for girls, always wipe from front to back. When you wipe from back to front (which is ok in boys) germs from the colon can get into the vaginal area and cause irritation and/or infection. I would call the Dr. and ask them about it.
Well, that's all I've got. I hope it helps.

Get a prescription ointment from the pedi. It works best. Also, have you tried a different brand of diaper? My youngest was like that with Pampers Baby Dry. I switched her to Huggies, and now she is fine. It is some kind of allergic reaction. P.S. Thanks for your help on my issue!

We have 2 year olds and the Dr. has mostly told us to use Lotrimin (jock itch cream)for the red rash, itching. We've been using that and it works on one of our kiddos, the other one it helps some. The Lotrimin is over the counter and less expensive than the prescription cream. I'm not sure if it is okay on a 9 month old, so definitely check with your Dr. to see if that is okay to use on your child.

There is a prescription cream called Nystatin that works great too.

She could have a yeast infection, if she has been on an antiboitoc lately, if so, there is a yogurt out there that is especially for that, also some babies are alergic to some disposable diapers, try some cloth ones for a few days, with diapers on, don't see how she could be scrathing herself except at bath time. Also if possible letting her (air out) without anything on for bits of time to see if that helps. Hope the Dr. has good suggestions if none of this works.

Hi H.,

It could be a yeast infection. It is quite common in boys AND girls, while wearing diapers. I am a nurse and have worked with children for quite some time, including my own ( ha ha ).

You can get any of the antifungals sold over the counter such as lotrimin. You can apply it a couple of times a day after a diaper change. You could also leave the diaper off a few times a day for about 30 minutes to dry the area out.
Good luck

Yep, diapers make dark, damp areas on little p****** p****. Have your doc look at it to confirm. when my daughter had a yeast infection as a baby, the doc told me to go get an OTC 7-day yeast infection treatment and use that topically. It's weird buying Monistat for your baby, but if it work, it works.

I just researched this recently. If i recall there is alot of advice here on this subject so try looking & you will read everyones experience. What i am doing is: 1. cut out ALL extra sugar that she might be eating. 2.Feed her plain yogurt everyday. 3. For her age a little 50/50 cranberry juice & water with breakfast.
This is just where to start. We are trying it & it seems to work. I think our grandaughter might have food allergies so we will look into that soon.
Best of luck to you.

My son used to have yeast infections as a baby. It looked like tiny pimples around his private area. His ped recommended clotrimazol (1%), or Lotrimin(brand name of the same thing). Usually a few days of application(every diaper change) would do it.
Try different diaper creams. Desitin night time works wonders on my daughter, some of my friends with girls swear by Dr Bordeux' butt paste (yellow package, I saw it at target)...
I would check webMD for infant yeast infection to compare the symptoms before you start clotrimazole.

Good luck, H.

our pedi told us the easiest way to tell if the rash is yeast or simply diaper rash was to look at the site of infection. Does it look like she was pelletted with bb's or like a rug burn (red dotts kind of like pimples or infected hair folicules)? If so, yeast is the cause.

My DD had yeast rashes all the time b/c her daddy's fam. has a skin irregularity where they don't produce enough good bacteria on the skin to "eat" away yeast and dirty diapers would break her out nearly every time!

If it is in fact yeast, e-mail me! I learned some WONDERFUL home remedies that work great, better than any prescription cream I ever received!

Best of luck!

There is a special cream for yeast infection, I don't know if it all requires a prescripton. I do know that I use Aquaphor Original ointment from Eucerin on about anything. It is a heavyhealing ointment that the Dr. recommended. It looks a little like vaseline but stays on much better and has some special healing compound in it. You can get it at about any drug counter with the creams. It is a little expensive but a little goes a long way and you can find coupons for it. Hope this helps. L.

If nothing else works, I have found that Dr. Smith diaper rash medicine is the very best. It comes in a round container and can be hard to find. If it's not on the shelf, ask your pharmacist, they'll know what you're talking about. Your daughter may be allergic to her diapers, or just have dry skin. You might try bathing her in Aveeno oatmeal bath wash periodically to see if that doesn't help. Good luck!

I'd see your doctor now and not wait. I couldn't read all the responses so these might be repeats but I'd consider the diaper you use (they can be allergic) even switching to pampers vs huggies could make a difference, also it could be the baby soap you are using to wash her or the wipes. I'd use unscented wipes with no alcohol for sure. As for baby soap, lotion and diaper rash cream I highly highly suggest Arbonne Baby Care line. It is more than Johnsons but lasts a long time and well worth it. You have to get it from a consultant but check out http://www.arbonne.com/products/baby/ and if you can't find a consultant I can put you in touch with one. I also suggest talking to your docgtor about probiotics - babies can take lactobacillis if ya'l don't eat yogurt. Good Luck!

You might want to try Dr. Smith's Diaper Cream. It can be found at Wal-mart for sure. I am not sure about anywhere else. It is a small white tub not tube. It works great and is very easy to clean off. If you think it might be something else, try putting a small bit of Lotrimon or something like it on first and then the diaper cream. Good luck !

2 thoughts...

1) If the skin is just red - use Aquafor every time you change her diaper. The redness goes away in hours.

2) If the skin is red & bumpy - use Lotrimin for yeast every time you change her diaper. Should go away in a day or so if you stay with it.

I have two daughters and have used both of these products for 6 years now. They both can be used for numerous skin issues. Keep them in your house at all times and if you don't know what the skin irritation is - try these!

Good luck!

At 9 months old, I doubt it is truly an itch. Most babies reach for the diaper area when the diaper is off. I live Arbonne's diaper rash cream. A little goes a long way! In fact, I only needed one tube for my daughter. I do not sell Arbonne...I just like that product alot. Ther is a probiotic that would be all around good for baby...it is in the form of a tiny pearl, that is EASILY downed in food. The probiotic is made by Shaklee. If she has a yeast infection that is bad enough to 'need' treated by a doctor I would think that you would see blood or foul odor (other than the usual odors :) )

Could be a yeast infection. My daughter had the same thing. Your pediatrician will be able to tell at a glance. Yeast infections have a bright red color that is different from diaper rash. As for treatment, they just introduced a prescription cream but you don't necessarily need that. My dr suggested OTC athletes foot cream (lotrimin) and it worked just fine. I also noticed that my daughter tended to have a flare up when her digestion was disturbed, either stomach flu or food she couldn't quite handle yet. (oranges, chocolate, etc) You may want to watch her diet and see if there is a food that she is sensitive to so that you don't trigger new infections.

Hi H.,

If the rash is sort of speckled looking it's likely a yeast infection. My little girl gets them quite often and our pediatrician told us to use Lotramin AF. He said to make sure it's the AF version. Just use a little bit on the outside area and it should clear up very quickly! Regular diaper rash cream doesn't really help since it doesn't treat the infection. Best of luck!

My girl was a lot more sensitive not only in the vaginal area, but also everywhere else. Her DR suggested Dr Smiths ointment and it cleared 95% of it within 24 hours. You can find it in a little white tub at most grocery stores and wal mart. It is a bit more expensive but trust me well worth it!! It also really helps to let her run around without a diaper on as well. It gives the area a chance to dry so the ointment has a better chance to heal the affected skin. As for the wondering hands, she more than likely is just exploring.

Very likely is yeast infection. My kids (all 4) had trouble with this as well. Main things to do - wipe with a soap-free wipe, at least for the final wipe (I rinse mine out in warm water to get rid of most of the soap), dry it well (use a blow dryer on low and keep it open to the air for a few minutes - since she's a girl this works! It's dangerous with boys!), and my doctor also recommended using Lotrimin AF (there are generics as well - Tom Thumb has a good price on their generic, so does Walgreens). If it's a yeast infection, the Lotrimin should clear it up unless it's really severe - then the doctor can give you a prescription.

before getting some over the counter medicine, you should see if it really is a yeast infection. it will be white pimply looking stuff vs red rash that is always in the same spot and doesn't go away. for me, my 2nd daughter didn't respond to balmex but within a day of using good old fashioned desitin, it started to clear! she did get a yeast infection a different time as well, and the doctor gave me a sample of something specific for babies not adults :)

His doctor told me to put an anti-fungal cream (like Lotrimen, or any generic anti-fungal like you would buy for athletes foot) and cover that with a layer of Vaseline to keep it from wiping off. Also, he told us to keep it free of diapers as much as possible. Thankfully, it was spring and we just stayed in the back yard as much as possible, he just wore shorts and t-shirt without a diaper. It was alot to clean up, but it finally went away. Now, granted, my son is now 15, so there is probably a better way now...;)

My daughter is VERY prone to yeast infections. She's only 5. It only occured to me about a yr ago that this was what it was, but she has always had problems with her "girl parts". When she was about your daughter's age, she would get horrible diaper rashes. NOTHING would make them go away and she would get cracked and bleed and everything. It was awful. Arbonne makes a baby line and their baby wash and lotion cleared it up over night!! If your daughter frequently looks irritated down there, then I would assume it's yeast related, and she probably itches. Personally, I would reccomend switching to Arbonne's baby line and see if that helps (it's not much more than Aveeno if you can find someone to sell it to you at-cost. I'm more than willing to if you're interested). Otherwise, you can get a medicated cream from your dr. I haven't tried that, so I'm little help there. My pediatrician did tell me, though, that's it's hard for them to really tell for sure if it's actually yeast when they're this little, though, so I stayed away from medication, just in case.
Good luck!!!
