Zoloft During Pregnancy

After a rough year, I finally have my anxiety under control (most days). I was on 50 mg of Zoloft for about three months and increased to 100 mg these last two months. I have done quite well on the Zoloft....now and then I do get myself all worked up that I am losing too much weight due to some unidentified illness (I had a Giardia parasite back in the fall and lost quite a bit of weight, but a recent stool sample showed nothing). It is an irrational fear and any weight loss is likely either due to the Zoloft and/or the result of weaning my toddler two months ago. In any case, We are expecting (am very early...only about a month along), and I am, of course, eager to hear stories of those who had healthy babies while taking Zoloft. My doctor encouraged me to stay on it, stating that the risk of a stressed out, anxious mom is greater than any effects the drug might have on the fetus.

Wishing you all a healthy, meaningful summer.

What can I do next?

I take zoloft as well, and did so during my pregnancies also. In all the research I have done, the only time that it could interfere with the fetus is during the last trimester when the lungs are developing. I chose to go off of it for the last 3 months, but as soon as I delivered, I was back on it in the hospital! It is a life saver, and I wholly recommend it when you are going through depression and motherhood, pregnancy, etc It can be pretty difficult even with the meds. If I can help, please pm me!

Zoloft causes heart defects in babies. I have a child with a congenital heart defect. He's had 3 open heart surgeries, 10 heart caths, 2 cardiac ablation so, etc. His defects were a 'glitch in development'...not linked to genetics, medications, etc. I would not wish that on anybody (mom or baby), so I would not take the chance. Stop taking it now....heart is developing as I type. Try other interventions....counseling, meditation, etc. And, find a new doctor!

If your anxiety is that severe, I would stay on the medication while pregnant.
You can google this and you'll find women who've stayed on their meds through pregnancy and had no issues.

Here's one site (there are others):

What does your Dr say?
You just now weaned and your pregnant? How old is the oldest child? Sounds like they will be pretty close together in age since you're pregnant again and that's enough to cause stress and anxiety for you.

I don't know pros and cons of taking RX while pregnant. I think it is certainly something on the priority list to discuss with your Dr.

If it were me, I eoukd not take any RX while pregnant unless absolutely necessary and even then I'd try another alternative. That said, I'm one who avoids RX and will only take one if I'm very sick.

I hope you don't feel like you've done anything wrong by being on Zoloft. I understand its a mild drug. If you do need to wean from Zoloft while pregnant, maybe you should have regular appointments with s counselor to help you get through your anxiety.

Best wishes.

Yeah my best friend's doc told her it was fine to stay on her anti anxiety meds during pregnancy.
Her son was born with a major heart defect, was airlifted to Children's Hospital in Oakland at birth and went through all kinds of cardiac issues for five years.
He's fine but his heart is weak and he'll need to be monitored for the rest of his life.
No sports for him either, no matter how badly he wants it.
And in case anyone is wondering, yes they received damages from the drug company but they'd give all the money back if it could make their little boy whole.
Sorry, not trying to make you feel bad, but you already have three kids, if you're going to keep having them you'd better be prepared for reality, including the side affects of the drugs you take to keep you "normal" and think about what kind of dynamic you're bringing another human being into.
You're in the salad years now, your stress/anxiety level is going to quadruple when you have three or four teenagers, how will you manage then? Quadruple your dose?

If your anxiety is that bad and your doctor suggests for you to stay on the medication, I would follow doctors orders, but i would also do some research on this drug. I personally have never taken zoloft, only Lexapro and Xanax but never while i was trying to get PG and during Pg. You need to do what is best for you under close supervision of a doctor of course. If it were me, I would not take this medication during pregnancy but that would be my personal choice. Good luck and god bless! Congrats!
