Homebirth and Waterbirth Midwife
By the time the California Licensed Midwifery Practice Act of 1993 established requirements for licensure and the scope of practice of modern midwives, Sue Wolcott had been active in the natural birth arena for decades.
Sue deeply respects and appreciates the natural process of childbirth. Her confidence in the birthing process as a normal, healthy function of a woman's body is the result of her work with scores of families over the years and the births of many hundreds of children safely "into her hands."
Midwives are committed to supporting the tremendous, joyful effort of women who choose to "give birth" rather than have someone "deliver their baby".
Sue offers homebirths because she has found that women are 'most likely to "labor" best in a place where they feel safe and private, surrounded by known and trusted family, friends and attendants.
"I deeply trust in the process of natural birth," Sue confirms, "and a hospital is not the only option for safe birth."
Sue is licensed by the California Medical Board and has been certified by the National Association of Registered Midwives. She is also a naturopathic doctor and a registered nurse with experience in labor and delivery as an OB nurse. Sue’s extensive training and experience has left her with no illusion about special circumstances which might require a woman to give birth in a hospital. She identifies and refers women who require different obstetrical attention.
Sue recommends diagnostic work when appropriate, refers her clients to specialists or to a different birth setting if needed, and provides full information about tests, procedures or treatments women may explore, to help them make informed choices about their birth experience.
Sue’s training and practice has also demonstrated that, for most women, the birth process unfolds safely, in a unique way and time, without interference. From the first appointment early in the pregnancy until a final check-in after the birth itself later to be sure mom, the baby and everyone in the family is doing well.
Sue offers mothers attentive personal, ongoing care. She monitors the physical, psychological and social well-being of the mother throughout her pregnancy, provides education about the birth process, labor and breastfeeding, and offers continuous hands-on assistance during a mother's labor and birth.
Sue offers the women of Los Angeles and surrounding areas an important choice in how they view, experience and remember the births of their children.

I'll do my best to remain objective, but to be honest, I love Sue.
She has been my midwife for the birth of my two children and I'm not entirely joking when I say I would consider having more children for the chance to spend time with her.
I ultimately chose Sue because she has an impressive 30 years of experience as a midwife and is also a registered nurse. It was important to me that she had spent time on the conventional as well as the homebirth side of the birthing experience.
It was always a joy to see Sue's car pull into my driveway. Prenatal visits with here were always a treat. During these visits, I took all of the exact same tests and received the same standard of care that I would have had with a conventional OB. The clear difference is that Sue would give an hour (sometimes longer) to answer all of my questions and check in with how I was feeling every step of the way. She would made sure I had all of the information I needed to make informed decisions throughout the process and was also available anytime I had one of those pregnant mama freak outs about something I read online in the middle of the night.
During the entire process and especially during the births Sue was available, informed, grounded, and professional. I trusted her totally and completely.
For all of these reasons, I highly recommend Sue and am proud to call her not only the best midwife in Southern California but also a friend.
I was pregnant with my first kiddo and my husband and I knew we wanted to have a home birth experience. I interviewed the three local midwives, who were all very qualified, but there was something I really liked about Sue. I went with my gut feeling about her and I don't have any regrets with my choice. Sue's personality and character clicked well my husbands and mine. She always made us feel comfortable and was always very happy to answer all our questions. Being that it was my first pregnancy, trust me I had a lot of questions. She was always available via phone and email. She would reply promptly. Our prenatal visits were at the convenience of pie schedule and in our own home. I love that we got to know her well and she met our two doggies too. We wanted to include our doggies during the birth and she was okay with that. There was never a time when Sue made us feel uncomfortable. During the birth she was calm and professional. There was a time during my labor that I wanted to throw in the towel and go to the hospital but Sue stuck by my side along with her team (Sarah andnancee) and reassured me that everything was going to be okay. During my pushing phase I kept reminding myself that I could do this and then on my final push, out came my beautiful baby girl. Sue and her team were amazing during the after care and allowed my husband and I to bond with the baby skin to skin. We never felt rushed. My husband and I would love to have more kids in the future and I hope Sue will be available again to be our midwife.
Sue is the best! She was my midwife for 2 of my births and if I have more Sue is who I'll call. She always took her time with me. During my appointments we had ample time to address any questions or worries I had. She took the time to really get to know me AND my family. She involved my older children in the prenatal visits so they got the feeling that it's their baby too. During my birthing times Sue was increadibly respectful allowing me to do what I needed to do and only stepping in when needed. I felt completely safe with her at all times. Sue is a unique midwife brining a wealth of experience, modern knowledge as well as traditional midwife know how. Sue is the best and I always miss her when our visits are over.
Sue has been a blessing to our family since the time we interviewed her for our first born. When we got pregnant with our first child, I went to an OB and when I tried asking her questions, she answered as quickly as possible with her hand on the door~I felt like she didn’t have time for me, my health and the health of our baby. So my husband and I decided to look into midwifery, and a friend of ours had a neighbor who recommended Sue. So we called her for an interview, and she took her time to answer all of our questions. She was very thorough, didn’t rush us, and had a nurturing quality that made me feel at ease and comfortable. After the interview, there was no doubt in my mind that we were going to do a home birth with Sue. Since then, we have had 3 beautiful, healthy babies with Sue being there every step of the way-from prenatal visits, and answering questions/concerns, to the labor and births, to being so supportive during the postpartum months and the challenges that they bring. She makes herself readily available around the clock to ensure the health of the mother and the baby. During the labors, Sue stood by and let my husband coach me, and allowed my body to go through the natural phases of childbirth. I was able to try different labor positions and in the moments when the labor overwhelmed me, she calmly and confidently stepped in and helped me get through them. Being able to experience childbirth naturally and in the comfort of my own home has been amazing to say the least. They have been such memorable events. I feel blessed and fortunate to have been able to experience this and with Sue’s knowledge, experience, loving care and dedication she helped to make our home birthing experiences that much more rich and memorable.

Both of my children were born at home and Sue was my midwife. I was so lucky to have found her! The first birth was breech and I know that a lot of midwives wouldn't assist a breech birth so I would have had no choice but to have a c-section. The second was posterior (sunny-side up)--June 10th, 2013.
Sue believed in me and that really gave me confidence during the birth. I love her calm, confident, relaxed way because it kept me calm and relaxed too.
I also love that she is a naturopathic midwife because I'm very much into holistic healing and natural cures.
Sue was always available to me by phone, text, email for any questions I had. She's thorough and spends at least an hour every visit. She does follow ups after the births and would text me out of the blue to see how things were going. She was so helpful to me after the first birth when I had a lot of questions and some problems that came up regarding breastfeeding, etc.
I really wanted my children to be born as naturally as possible and with as little intervention as possible. I know that, without Sue, I would likely have had to have 2 c-sections. I count my blessings every day that things happened the way they did. I can't recommend Sue Wolcott enough!
Sue is the absolute BEST. You are very lucky indeed if you live in the southern California area and can have Sue as your midwife.
Sue and team have helped us bring Liam and Lazlo into the world, with loving, nurturing care. We felt at ease from the very beginning.
We can not recommend them highly enough!
I love Sue!
My birth, my prenatal and postnatal care were such wonderful experiences thanks to Sue. I always felt safe with her care. My baby, my boyfriend and I are so thankful for all the support that she offered us.
I have birthed 2 babies at home under the supervision of Sue Wolcott. With Sue, I was able to follow through on my birth plan of peaceful drug-free labor and deliveries. I never had a second thought about the medical complications that rarely, but possibly could arise during labor. I knew that Sue would address every moment and keep my husband and I informed. I was able to relax and focus. If anybody wants a personal reference about Sue, I would be happy to take the time to talk. Sue is truly a gift to pregnant women. Prenatal care was extensive and informative also, which is the reason I was able to be confident throughout labor.

Sue is an amazing midwife/consultant to all things pertinent to pregnancy and childbirth.
When I became pregnant with my first baby, I already knew I wanted a homebirth. My husband and I looked into all of our midwife options and hired Sue when I was 6 weeks pregnant. She provided impeccable prenatal care, was available to me 24/7 (even on Thanksgiving Day, when I thought I was having a miscarriage but, luckily, wasn't...), and attended our birth along with Meadow, her midwife- assistant. I can't say enough glowing things about Sue and Naturopathic Midwifery - she was hands-off in the best possible way, allowing me to labor the way that worked best for me, but still monitoring my and the baby's vital signs and assuring us that all was well. At one point between pushes, while in the waterbirth tub, I opened my eyes to see Sue leaning on the tub, her eyes closed, a peaceful look on her face. I thought to myself, "if her eyes are closed, everything must really be fine!"...and with the next push, I successfully pushed our baby out. He was 7 pounds, 6 oz, and as pink and healthy as could be. My total labor time was 20 hours, and as challenging it was, I never for one second worried that I couldn't do it. I was fully supported.
Sue's postpartum care is also impeccable, and quite unusual: she came to our home 3 separate times after the baby was born, helping with breastfeeding, doing the newborn exams, and examining me to make sure I was recovering well. She was always available by phone for our new-parent questions. Now, 6 months after our son was born, I have chosen to have all of my Well-Woman exams from Sue, rather than waiting for 2 hours at my gynecologist's office and getting a 5-minute visit. And needless to say, when I get pregnant with the next baby, Sue will be the first phone call we make!
Sue has attended the births of three of my four children. I have known her for years and trust her completely.
Sue is very knowledgeable. She is an expert in natural birth, but she is also fully in tune with mainstream medicine. She stays on top of all the latest trends and new information.
All the technical stuff aside, she is low key and easy going with a great sense of humor. She really knows how to take the edge off with a good laugh. She is the best!
Sue is an outstanding midwife. She attended my 2nd homebirth. I thank her and her experience for the peaceful birth we had with our 3rd son. My mother-in-law, an RN, attended the birth. She was extremely sceptical about homebirths, but after witnessing Sue and her skill, she now has an appreciation for the art of midwifery and the safety of homebirth. The 3rd birth with Sue, was a healing experience for my family after our 2nd homebirth with another midwife, which resulted in hospital transfer. I recommend Sue for her skill, perfessionalism, ethics, and when needed, her take charge attitude.
Sue is an amazing midwife, from the prenatal visits to the birth as well as postpartum visits. we always felt very comfortable in her care, she's calm, knowledgeable and compassionate.2 thumbs up for sue and meadow
Sue was my midwife for my first child. I totally trust Sue 100%. I had a water birth, which was amazing. Sue was with me all through my pregnancy, even months after the delivery of my son I was still calling with questions. She feels like family to us. I would highly recommend Sue to anyone who was wanting a home birth. She really knows what shes doing.
I have worked with some of Sue's home birth clients and have heard nothing but wonderful comments about her.
I definitely recommend Sue Wolcott.
