Buying New Home/school District...

Philadelphia, PA

We want to move and I would just like to have some opinions on this issue - school discticts! Would you rather live in a small, older home in a great public school district OR live in a new, large, upgraded home (same price as the small, older home) in a school district that is questionable? Let me specify another thing - IF we were to choose the "questionable" school district, we would most definitely send our kids to private school. (If you are interested in the school districts I am talking about, feel free to ask in a message. I could also use the input on them as well.)

My husband and I are considering putting up our home for sale in hopes of buying a foreclosed home in an area where we would stay for a long time. Does anyone know if foreclosure sales are any different than regular real estate? Also, does anyone know how to go about getting a listing of foreclosed homes?

Landlord or Renters Experience

Atlanta, GA

Hi everyone!! I have at least to me a unique experience in that my family and I are renting to whom we thought was our landlord but come to find out she wasn't she was sub leasing the house to us. I found out when the real owner contacted us (my husband) to say that he was putting the property up for sale. Here's the part I need help on we gave the real renter (person we thought owned the house but doesn't) a deposit. I have learned that she hasn't been sending all of our rent to the real landlord (owner) she's had money issues. How do I get my deposit back??? The real owner now wants us to send him the rent he's also put the house up for sale we now are told by him not to deal with her at all. I was going to use the deposit as my last months rent and get the heck out but if she has spent that I can't afford rent here a new deposit and 1st month on a new house. Can I take her to court here in GA she lives in FL??? The house needed repairs when we moved in and still does things we can't fix like the roof expensive stuff so I know it may not sell right off and it's the holidays not many people shop for house's right now. Oh and yes my lease is up we have been living here month to month since July. I still have to give 30 days notice according to lease. Just wondered if any of you have been the renter or landlord and had an experience like this to deal with. Thanks for your input!

Radon Level in Home

Chicago, IL

We just had an inspection done on a home we are planning to purchase in Oswego (Kendall Co), and had it tested for radon also. It came back with a high level. The EPA recommends if the level comes back higher than 4.0 (pCi/L). Ours tested at 7.0. The recommendation is a mitigation system, which we can request the seller put in before closing. Our concern is, does this really solve the problem, or lower the level to a safer level. Does anybody have experience with this? We are concerned since radon is a Class A known human carcinogen. I realize it occurs from the radioactive decay of naturally occuring uranium in the soil and that it is common in this area. Plus, I look at all the other things in our life that we are exposed to that may/may not cause cancer. Obviously we want to make sure if we bought the house and installed the mitigation system, that if we ever had to sell it, that it would not prevent us from selling it. And we want to stay healthy! If anybody has any experience with this situation, please let me know. Thanks!
