Where to Find Puppets

I am looking for a store in the Sterling Heights/Rochester area that might sell puppets that I can use to help teach my 4 year old Sunday school class. I can't find any puppets anywhere. I have tried Lakeshore Learning (they had some but were for kids to hold -- too small for my hands), Toys R Us and the Family Christian bookstore. I was hoping to not have to buy one online. Anyone have any ideas?

What to Do with the Piles and Piles of School Artwork?!

I'm desperately trying to get a handle on the chaos in my house that has gotten out of hand since my fourth baby was born in September. I am able to organize most things pretty efficiently, but the one thing I have never been able to figure out how to deal with is the artwork and school papers that come home every day. Now I have 2 kids in preschool, so they are coming home with completed cut and paste exercises, paper bag hand puppets, painted masterpieces, and a ton of projects that relate to the current season or theme of the week. ...

Has anyone other used the "your baby can read" program. Do you think it works? How do show your child to read? Is it too young at 4 years of age? Do we just let them learn in school.

What to Do About the Bully

My daughter has had a problem with a certain girl at school for 2 years now. They are both in 2nd grade. I have talked to the principle about the issues and thought it had been resolved but the little girl keeps seeking my daughter out to make fun of her clothes, hair, shoes etc... The problem is is that the little girls mom is an employee at the school. The little girl was suppose to get detention but that some how slipped through the cracks and she never did serve it and she knows it. She tells my daughter that all her mom has to do is...

Extremely Timid Child in New situations~Worried About School

I am seeking feedback about my daughter who is now just over 4 years. She is extremely shy in new situations and/or environments with a lot of people she doesn't know. She is also very much a mommy's girl, to the point that she is glued to me much of the time even at home. I don't know if this has to do with being an only child or not. However, new situations such as attempts at dance class and swim lessons have resulted in full meltdowns on her part due to the fact that she must face a stranger for a teacher and unknown children. She...

Having Friends Over?

So basically my question is this: Will we ever get to a point where I feel comfortable having my children's friends over? A little background: I am a SAHM to five children. My SO and I met just over 4 years ago. I already had a son (now6) he had three girls (now 5,8,9), together we had one girl (now 3). Well, now four of the five are in elementary school and have lots of friends. I'm wondering how many other families just don't really do the friend thing. Part of my problem is our house is never company ready, as you can imagine...

Daughter Keeps Saying That She's Scared...

My 2 yr. old daughter keeps telling us that she is scared of things. Sometimes, it seems like she is just startled by something, like when one of our cats runs around, but other times it is something bizarre. Last night, as we were reading a new book, there was a tiny picture of a walrus, and she kept saying that she was scared of the walrus. Huh? She has seen pictures of walruses before, and it never freaked her out. She is also scared of puppets, and things on her hands. Since birth, she has never liked her hands covered, so that one...

What to Do About Son Acting Out in School

My son started all-day kindergarten this year, and all sorts of issues have arisen since he began. He is normally HIGHLY independent, but also tends to be a very happy boy, cheery, excited about everything. But in just a few months he's started acting out in class, on the playground, and even on the bus. Yesterday he said the S-word in class, and even tried to get a classmate to say it. He was also sat down in P.E. yesterday three times for misbehaving. The weird thing is, he's pretty happy at home (although on days like these he comes...

Just Informed My Son Is "Hyperactive" or "High Energy"

I just attended my son's kindergarten parent/teacher conference. He is 5, almost 6 years old. Only a few minutes into the meeting, his teacher mentioned he was "hyperactive". During the rest of the meeting, she used the term "high energy". Academically, he is right where he should be. I have always known my son is very active, he plays hard. There are also alot of times when he is content to play with his action figures in his room or out back for long periods of time. He can make leaves and even Halloween candy "action figures" and...

I have a first grader who is outgoing, sweet and kind. Our problem is not getting his seat work done in class because he is too busy talking to his friends and them talking to him. When he doesn't get his work done at school he has to bring it home and finish it. This is on top of the nightly homework. This is what I have tried to get homework done. When he gets home I have let him play first then go sit down and do all his homework. Then we have tried the work for 10 mins. play for 10 mins. This works OK but there are nights I...

Second Grader Struggling in School

I just got my son's second semester report card...YIKES!! His reading grade dropped from a C to a D+. I read with my son all the time but it doesn't seem to be helping. He reads very slow and doesn't have very good fluency. Because of this he can't comprehend what he is reading. He didn't even get a score on the last reading test they had because he has to read and then answer the questions. If he has a hard time reading the story I am sure he can't read the questions that follow either. He lacks confidence. He has lots of confidence when...

Throwing a Fit at School and at Home !!

My son is 5 and thinks he is 35 !! He talks back to me and his father, throws things, and tries to tell us what he is doing and what we are going to do as well. Just today he had a letter given to me from his teacher saying that during choice time today he thew a fit because he could not play with legos. He threw a chair and then proceeded to throw a puzzle. What Ways Have You Found to Be Thrifty and Have Fun

So part of me has been a little sad that this summer has taken such a beating on our budget. We had a move to contend with shortly before school ended. We moved to a much bigger home that while we pay a lot less in our rent, we have had a HUGE electric bill. We had a vehicle break down and it was deemed "Totaled" so back to one vehicle, but also meant a car payment and higher insurance...so we have been cutting as many corners and trying to adhere to a rather strict budget. Pinching pennies has never been so true... While we have splurged...

Gift Idesa for a Friend with a Special Needs Child

I have a friend who is mother to a beautiful little girl who has quite a lot of mental and physcal issues (MS for one, brain damage at birth, etc.). She is in a wheelchair and requires constant care. She will be turning 4 this year on her birthday and every year I am at a complete loss as to what to get her for her birthday. I was hoping some moms out there could give me some ideas. She of course does not play with toys as she is confined to a wheel chair. In the past I have bought clothes but I would love to give her something more...
