Potty Training 101 With BottomZz Up
As a mother and the creator of potty training pants BottomZz Up, Lynn Ell Tilker is no stranger to the woes of potty training. While her genius innovation helps keep kids on track, she’s also learned a few key techniques along the way. If you think it’s time for your little one to ditch the diapers, Tilker’s tips can help get you started.
When is the right time to start potty training?
Every child is different, there is no one size fits all. Overall the right time is when they are exhibiting interest and can communicate and are able to pull their pants on and off. Some signs include, does your child follow you to the bathroom, play with the toilet paper, flush the toilet, mimic you? Does your child let you know when they are wet or soiled and are they unhappy when their diaper is dirty? All of these are signs that your child is closer to ditching diapers.
How do you know your child is ready?
It is a team effort, both parent and child need to be ready and one major step is to start to talk to your toddler about using the big kid potty. When you little tike is eager and agreeable it’s time to start. If they show no sign at all, you may be setting yourself up for some frustration and messes.
What’s the first step to getting started?
Plan for a time that is not hectic or there are no distractions like a new baby or moving or external stresses. Make sure your toddler is exhibiting signs and interest in potty training. And if you feel you want more professional support, hire a potty training coach to help you and our toddler properly be prepared and able to stay with it.
Any tips for staying on track?
Encourage, participate and celebrate each and every step. Above all stay consistent and on a schedule. All of these elements are necessary for potty training success. Parents need to realize that in order to be successful, they need to be committed to the potty training process and they will see more trips to the potty and less accidents. For more information, BottomZz Up offers a program along with our revolutionary potty training system.
What’s the best way to deal with an accident?
Accidents are going to happen, so be prepared. Negativity and getting upset or angry at your child can be counter-productive to your toddler’s progress. Little ones feed off their parent’s emotions and might choose to disengage in the potty training process. Stay positive and perhaps increase the number of times you ask your child if they need to go potty until you can identify their personal pattern.
How did you come up with the idea for BottomZz Up?
When I began potty training my daughter Harper Rose (now 8), there was no product that actually taught my daughter to feel wet, so why would she go to the potty. All the products on the market wicked away any moisture, so she never felt the discomfort of being wet. I was also uncomfortable with using plastic that I knew took hundreds of years to disintegrate in landfills and there is toxic exposure to her. I wanted to create something that was not only something that would teach a toddler, was eco-friendly, remove all the guess work by including a complete solution, product, program and philosophy all in one box.
Here’s how it works:
Easy to follow 5 Step Program
1. Put your kiddo in BottomZz Up potty training underwear and inserts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week (not the same pair, please). Place the absorbent insert into the front pocket of the BottomZz Up pant with the glossy side facing the toddler.
2. Hang the reward chart in your bathroom, send your kiddo to the potty periodically, and slap a sticker on that sucker (the chart, not your kiddo) for every effort. In case you missed it, kids love stickers.
3. Accidents happen. When they do, the patented BottomZz Up design lets your toddler feel the discomfort of being wet, while protecting their clothes and whatever they were sitting on (carpet? cat?). Toss the wet insert in the trash and the BottomZz Up in the washer and pull on a new pair with a fresh insert.
4. Be consistent, even at bedtime! Remember, BottomZz Up lets kids feel wet without wetting their sheets or bedding. After a few nighttime accidents your super smarty will learn to get up when she needs to go potty, even at night.
5. Every kid is different, but after a few weeks of BottomZz Up, you should be seeing less accidents and more trips to the potty. When your pumpkin is a pro, complete the graduation certificate and CELEBRATE!
